HP set to offer printers with email addresses

Posted in HP by Shane McGlaun on June 7th, 2010

HP purchased Palm not too long ago as a way to get its hands on webOS. Shortly after the purchase was finished, we learned that HP had bigger plans than smartphones for webOS with an eye towards devices like web connected printers and tablets.

I thought webOS in a printer sounded weird at first. The New York Times reports today that HP will have a new line of web-connected printers that will have their own email addresses. I would bet several of these will be running webOS.

Posted in Blu-ray by Conner Flynn on June 5th, 2010

Blu-ray players normally just play Blu-ray discs, but Hitachi see them doing more. That’s why they decided to integrate a 32GB solid-state drive as well.

Hitachi is calling it the “Hy Drive,”. The idea is that the operating system and critical software components could be installed into the SSD, leaving your platter hard drive free for everything else. It could improve overall system performance. Hitachi launches the new drives in August.

Toshiba LCD panel does 2D and 3D images at the same time

Posted in Toshiba by Conner Flynn on June 4th, 2010

Toshiba has an LCD panel which is capable of converting a 2D image partially to a 3D image, where it can then be viewed with the naked eye without the need for an extra pair of special glasses. This LCD panel is compatible with the “integral imaging method” developed by Toshiba and boasts nine viewpoints within a 12″ display at 1,400 x 1,050 resolution for 2D images in full screen and 466 x 350 for 3D images in full screen.

The 3D images are made possible thanks to the “GRIN (gradient index) lens” that changes the distribution of refraction indexes by controlling the gradient of liquid crystal molecules. Turning on the second panel allows You to show 2D images and 3D images simultaneously.

Wish you had an iPad to entertain you during your flight? Fly Jetstar. Bluebox only announced the idea two weeks ago and already it’s slated to hit Australia at the end of the month. Quantas budget carrier Jetstar Airways will hold a trial of the service in the last two weeks of June, where they will hand out iPads to passengers on flights 90 minutes or longer for the equivalent of $10.

If a success, they will extend the service to their entire network. In the meantime, enjoy your inflight movie.

Inventec Dr. Eye Android-powered MID

Posted in MID by Conner Flynn on June 3rd, 2010

It’s not often you come across a gadget that has a name like a Bond villain, but Inventec has done just that, naming its new device Dr. Eye. This new MID opens up like a miniature netbook or notebook, though we aren’t sure why anyone would want a MID like this, what with the popularity of tablet devices.

The device will cost you $400. That’s tablet price territory. Still, if you like it, some specs include: a 4.8-inch touchscreen display, QWERTY keyboard, a 600Mhz Marvell 624 processor, 3G, Wi-Fi, Front-facing webcam, Android 1.6 with the possbility to upgrade to 2.1.

HP’s new 30″ ZR30w display with over a billion colors

Posted in HP by Conner Flynn on June 1st, 2010

HP’s new ZR30w S-IPS LCD display is impressive. It boasts a color resolution of 30-bits per pixel, which means some 1.07 billion displayable colors. That’s about 64 times as many as you can see on an average LCD.

The ZR30w features a 2560 x 1600 resolution, that’s over 4 million pixels. It’s being targeted at small businesses for a price of $1,299. Sadly that just means higher resolution work, while you go home to your not as colorful HDTV.

USB 3.0 memory card reader unveiled by Pretec

Posted in USB 3.0 by Shane McGlaun on June 1st, 2010

One of the things that I don’t like about my high capacity memory cards is moving a lot of pictures from them to my PC in bulk. I tend to just snap pics until the card is full. It can take a long time to transfer lots of GB of pics to the PC via USB.

Pretec has announced the world’s first USB 3.0 memory card reader called the P240. This super fast memory card reader has up to 5Gb/s of bandwidth. That makes it perfect for transferring lots of images and video to and from memory cards.

NYC restaurant takes orders on iPads

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on May 27th, 2010

If you want to eat at a fancy high-tech restaurant, here’s something new. Very soon, New York’s midtown will have a restaurant that features a 240-square-foot screen, showing tweets and Foursquare check-ins. Customers can also customize their orders, add them to the 4Food.com social networking site, and if other people order their creations then they’ll be paid 25 cents for every order. Sounds pretty sweet.

That money can be saved up and redeemed on future purchases. The renders make the restaurant look like a new version of the Apple store, so it’s appropriate that orders are taken online on iPads, or with actual human beings.

Team TP1023 external HDD looks like a sports car

Posted in Storage by Shane McGlaun on May 27th, 2010

I guess with all things being equal I and many others would prefer to have a gadget that looked cool over one with a more mundane design. This is the crowd that will like the sound of the new Team TP1023 external HDD.

The drive is designed to look like a sports car, and it does a good job. It reminds me of a Ferrari. The drive has a suspension system to protect the HDD in the event of a drop. Other feature of the external HDD include an energy saving automatic suspend mode when the drive is idle to save power.

New iPhone launching in June?

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on May 26th, 2010

There aren’t many details yet, but according to the guys over at BGR, some AT&T employees have confirmed that the iPhone 4G will be launched in June. That seems pretty fast since it’s scheduled to be unveiled in early June.

But maybe Apple wants to just get it over with at this point since the cat was let out of the bag awhile ago. If this is true you won’t have to wait long at all.

Forget skipping ads on Google TV

Posted in Google by Conner Flynn on May 26th, 2010

Google TV sounds like a great idea. Sure. But one large downside has just surfaced, which should surprise no one. Google is in the advertising business after all, so Google TV product manager Rishi Chandra has confirmed that ad skipping will not be allowed.

Many of us are used to skipping ads on our set-top boxes. Google really has to arrange things so that somehow the user sees this as a win. I’m not sure how they would do that. You know what would be great? Putting the ad on my remote. That way I can set it down and ignore it.
