Police will soon have more weapons on them, specifically on their sleeve thanks to designer David Brown. He has developed a new sleeve for police that fits on the user’s hand. It can be deployed instantly and packs a high-voltage tazer type stunner, a video camera, a laser pointer and a flashlight.

The device weighs less than three pounds and is meant to be worn as a glove. There are buttons on the palm to use the stunner, camera, laser and the flashlight. It’s just a concept right now, but hopefully soon it can help police.

Curved DSLR concept

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on August 14th, 2010

It’s safe to say that we’ve never seen a DSLR like this before. All DSLR cameras on the market look quite similar, but Yaniv Berg has a DSLR camera design that looks…different. Like an old army flashlight or curved pipe.

The design of this camera makes it easy for the user to take photos at some strange angles. In fact, you would be tempted to say “Up periscope” every time you snapped a pic. You would definitely stand out from the crowd.

Microsoft announces InstaLoad battery technology

Posted in Batteries by Conner Flynn on July 1st, 2010

Microsoft’s new InstaLoad technology sounds amazing. It promises to redefine the way you insert batteries into your devices, letting you forget about positive or negative polarity. That’s possible thanks to a patented battery contact design, which Microsoft says “simply works,” and is compatible with a whole range of battery sizes, both standard and rechargeable.

Microsoft is already licensing the technology to third party device suppliers, and is even offering a royalty-free license for suppliers and manufacturers of accessibility products. This could change the entire battery game.

Mophie’s juice pack air external case added some battery life to the iPhone, but it also makes your iPhone chubby. Now Mophie is introducing a line of external juice packs that pop into your device using a retractable dock connector.

Joby Gorillatorch Flare debuts

Posted in Flashlights by Shane McGlaun on June 9th, 2010

About this time last year, I talked about the Joby Gorillatorch. The Gorillatorch is a plain flashlight that is on one of the articulating Joby tripods with magnetic feet. The Gorilltorch was a very cool little gadget.

Joby has announced a new version of the Gorillatorch called the Gorillatorch Flare. The Flare is almost identical to the original Gorillatorch with the exception of the Flare having a single white LED and three red LEDs inside. The white LED offers up to 100 lumens of light and the three reds lights can be used to create a red distress beacon.

Eton Scorpion keeps your gadgets going on solar power and elbow grease

Posted in Green Gadget by Shane McGlaun on May 13th, 2010

I am more of an indoors type. I’m not really into camping and while I do go outside with the kids a lot, we don’t stray too far from an outlet. However, a while back when a hurricane came through the power was out for hours and I would have paid dearly for a gadget like the Eton Scorpion.

The device is a power generator for USB charging gadgets that has both a solar panel and a hand crank to generate charging power. The gadget also has a number of other features inside.

Your iPhone just became even more versatile. Now you can turn it into a fan, a flashlight, even a laser, thanks to German company HMB TEC, who has created peripherals that plug into the headphone jack, controlled by special apps.

The laser costs 20 € with $5.99 for the app. Some other accessories HMB TEC has come up with include a flashlight, thermometer, heart monitor, infrared remote, microphone and stethoscope. BunBun Eco Light: Twirl to charge

Posted in Flashlights by Conner Flynn on April 1st, 2010

Eco gadgets that don’t require batteries usually have a solar panel in them. Or maybe they require you to crank a handle to juice it up. Well, the BunBun Eco Light has neither. Instead, you just have to twirl it around for about 30 seconds.

All of that kinetic energy will juice the battery and give you 5 minutes of light using a trio of LEDs. You would probably be twirling something anyway, like your keys. The BunBun Eco Light should arrive this month for around $22 in pink, green, purple and black colors.

Stanley watch with built in LED flashlight

Posted in Watches by Conner Flynn on December 30th, 2009

This flashlight watch from Brando is pretty neat. I’m not sure how useful it actually is, or even if it’s an official Stanley gadget, but any watch with it’s own flashlight is good by me.

It also features an alarm, backlight and a timer. At least you will always have a flashlight at the ready for those projects that you choose to build in the dead of night.
