BlackBerry 9700 Onyx spottedIn case you were curious as to what the 3G capable BlackBerry 9700 looks like on a hardwood floor, here ya go. The device is rumored to have a November 11 launch date on T-Mobile, but that’s unconfirmed.

That’s about all we have right now. When we last checked in with this guy, it was before it’s heady days posing on hardwood and pouting at the photographer. Some of the rumored specs include: a new Trackpad, Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, UMTS/HSDPA, 480×360 resolution screen, OS 5.0, QWERTY keyboard, 3.2 megapixel AF camera and Bluetooth.

Verizon Wireless adds Gateway netbook to line

verizongatewayIn many parts of the world, subsidized notebooks and netbooks have been common for a long time. Here in the U.S. subsidized notebooks have really only started to be offered over the last year. Verizon Wireless has announced the latest addition to its notebook line, the Gateway LT2016u.

The device is set to go on sale with Verizon on October 4 for $149.99 after a $100 mail in rebate. The netbook has a 10.1-inch LED backlit screen and a 6-cell battery for power. The CPU is an Intel Atom N270 and it has 1GB of RAM and 160GB of storage.

Joby whips out new iPhone 3G/3G S tripod

jobygm2There are times when you really need some way to hold your iPhone steady while you take a picture, ride a bike, or walk while pushing something. The catch is that most tripods aren’t flexible. Joby makes a line of flexible tripods called the Gorillapod camera tripods and the company has unveiled a new one for the iPhone 3G and 3G S.

The device is called the Gorillamobile for 3G /3GS, is completely flexible, and will hold the phone on most any surface that you can wrap the tripod legs around. It will hold your iPhone at the grocery store on the cart so your kid can watch video or you can use the calculator. You can also use it to support the phone while you watch movies at your desk.

Apple Tablet rumored for an early January launchIt’s been a long and wild ride with the Apple tablet rumors and it isn’t over yet. iLounge has itself a reliable source that has revealed more information on the upcoming Apple Tablet.

According to the source Apple is all set to reveal the touch-screen tablet on or before January 19, 2010. Some other tidbits are that Apple has created at least three prototypes. Version 1 has a 7” screen, which was too small. The latest version has a 10.7” screen. It runs iPhone OS, and it looks like an iPhone 3G, complete with a curved back.

Philips X806 and C702 touchscreen phonesPhilips has unveiled two new touchscreen handsets, the X806 and the C702 which will most likely drop in China soon. The pair look pretty nice. The X806 is just 14mm thin, comes with a 3.5″ TFT display at 240 x 400 resolution, a 5-megapixel camera, Bluetooth connectivity, integrated FM radio, 47MB of internal memory and a microSD memory card slot. No 3G listed sadly.

Next is the CDMA 1X Philips C702 handset, with a 1.3-megapixel camera, a 3.4″ QVGA display, Bluetooth connectivity, GPS navigation, 70MB internal memory and a microSD memory card slot.

Sony Optiarc America unveils slim DVD/CD burner

sonydrxs70uwI have a few external optical drives in my office that I use when I am working on my netbook. The things are a few years old and are not at all thin. The big drives also require power adapters while newer drives can be totally powered by the USB port. Sony has announced a new slim CD/DVD burner today called the DRX-S70U-W that is very thin.

The thin drive can burn DVD+/- R media at up to 8X speeds. The drive can also record to dual layer optical media at up to 6X speeds. Plain ol’ CD-R/RW discs can be burned at a speedy 24x.

You have your choice of 2 processors; the Intel Core 2 Duo running at 1.4GHz or a 1.6GHz SU9600 processor. You can configure it with up to 4GB as well get dual SSD drives for storage. The Dell Z 600 also boasts an optional wireless charging stand for $200 as well as a wireless dock that houses a USB, DVI and other connections.

LG officially unveils BL20 Chocolate handset

LG officially unveils BL20 Chocolate handsetLG has officially announced the upcoming release of its new Chocolate series handset, the BL20. Some specs include a 5-megapixel camera, 2.4-inch display, and a touchbutton interface. The BL20 will ship to Europe first in October for the equivalent of $394 without a contract.

Some other features include an LED flash and autofocus for the camera, with internal memory at 130MB, expandable with an 8GB microSD memory card. It supports Quad-band GSM voice networks and two-band 3G data networks.

TomTom unveils XL 340S Live GPS unit with connected services

tomtom-xl-340GPS units have evolved from devices that were mostly of help on long road trips to items that commuters can use on the route that they drive each day as a way to get out of traffic. TomTom announced a new GPS device today with connected services via AT&T.

The device is called the TomTom XL 340S Live and has AT&T 3G connectivity built-in. The AT&T connectivity allows the GPS unit to perform local search for gas stations, restaurants and more. Connectivity also allows the GPS device to get real-time traffic info.

China Unicom set to launch iPhone in October

iphone3g-sbChina Unicom and Apple signed a deal a month or so back, that resulted in the iPhone 3G getting ready to head over to China with the 700 million mobile subscribers in the country. What we didn’t know is when the phone was coming and how much it would cost.

China Unicom announced today that it would be selling the iPhone at a standalone price of 5,000 yuan or about $732.50. Most people will opt to choose a subsidized package that will bring the cost of the phone down significantly.

This one boasts aerospace grade aluminum parts. You can also expect GPS, 3G, MicroSD card support, 3MP camera with dual LED flash, and City Brief; a feature for “restaurant recommendations, the latest exhibitions, shopping guides and important cultural etiquette tips.”

This Vertu clamshell also ships with some exclusive ringtones recorded by UK based band Zero 7. Pretty impressive for a clamshell. And at those prices it had better be.

Samsung SCH-W880 12 megapixel phonecameraIs it a camera or a phone? Samsung’s latest is a 3G cellphone in a 12 megapixel camera. Just as Darth Vader is more machine than man, this M8920 / SCH-W880 is more camera than phone. Certainly more camera than most 12 megapixel cameraphones are. It’s not official yet, but the announcement will come soon.

The most interesting aspects of this one are the extending 3x optical zoom and the dedicated camera controls like a mode dial, shutter and zoom, along with a 3.3-inch WVGA AMOLED display. Some other specs are HD (720p?) video, HSDPA data, WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, microSD slot, and DMB mobile television.

Orange UK to Sell Apple’s iPhone Later This Year

Orange to sell the Apple iPhone in the UKFrance Telecom’s Orange announced on Monday that it will start selling the iPhone in the UK later this along with Telefonica’s O2. O2 has previously had exclusive rights to sell the iPhone in Britain however the contract is set to expire.

Orange announced that both the 3G and the 3GS versions will be available to UK customers later in the year, but gave no more details of exact dates or expecting pricing for the handset or plans.

Though we try not to think about it, it is worth knowing which cellphones have the highest and lowest radiation levels. To that end, the Environmental Working Group has launched a website that rates cellphones on radiation output.

Here are the highlights: Ranking high on the list (in other words these phones put out the lowest levels of radiation) are the Motorola RAZR V8, and AT&T’s Samsung Impression. In fact, Samsung holds several spots at the top of the list. On the other end of the spectrum, some phones that rated poorly are T-Mobile’s myTouch 3G and the Blackberry Curve 8830.
