Sony shrinks PS3 OS and gives extra RAM to devs

Posted in Sony by Shane McGlaun on February 24th, 2010

One of the big reasons that I bought my PS3 when the console first came out was so I could use it as a Blu-ray player. As it turns out that was a great decision thanks to the myriad of new features that Sony adds to the device like the coming 3D update.

Joystiq reports that Sony has shrunk the OS the PS3 uses from 120MB down to 50MB. The really good news is that the electronics giant is playing Robin Hood and has given that extra RAM to game developers to play with.

Sony’s first 3D receiver for $500

Posted in 3D by Conner Flynn on February 18th, 2010

3D is a real pain in the ass. First, all of this new fancy 3D equipment is costing you a lot. But it’s not just the price. Your receivers can’t pass 3D signals because they aren’t equipped with HDMI 1.4. Here’s some more bad news. Only one of Sony’s 4 new receivers supports 3D.

The 7.1 channel, 110W STR-DN1010 will be Sony’s “affordable” 3D receiver. It will cost you $500 when it becomes available this June. It’s the first to support HDMI 1.4 3D pass-through technology over 4 HDMI ports.

Ikonoskop A-cam3D shoots 1080p RAW video in stereo

Posted in 3D by Conner Flynn on February 4th, 2010

It looks like a new version of a view-master. That’s because this baby is all about shooting 1080p RAW video in stereo. We don’t know much about it right now, but Ikonoskop is just teasing us with some specs. One thing we do know is that we likely won’t be able to afford one.

But we want one. The company already has a $10k 1080p RAW camera, the A-cam dII, and now it’s using the same tech for 3D. With battery and memory this guy weighs 6 pounds and will be able to record 25 or 30 fps in individual RAW sequences and will be built on order.

Acer GD235HZ 23-inch LCD is ready for some 3D action

Posted in Acer by Conner Flynn on February 1st, 2010

3D is all the rage right now, so we’ll be seeing tons of 3D technology this year. This one is from Acer. The GD235HZ is a 23.6-inch, 1080p LCD display, with 3D capabilities that require NVIDIA’s 3D Vision active shutter glasses, which are sold separately.

The LCD itself will cost ya $399 and an additional $199 for the NVIDIA kit. You’ll also need a compatible graphics card. Yeah, if you are going 3d, it isn’t cheap, but you already knew that. And there isn’t much 3D content right now either.

Samsung’s BD-C6900 is the company’s first 3D Blu-ray player, and its available now for pre-order on Amazon. Samsung wants you to buy your 3D gear now, not later when you can actually use it. You can still put on the glasses and pretend. Who’s going to know?

Sky+HD 1TB box: 240 hours of HD video

Posted in Set Top Boxes by Conner Flynn on January 28th, 2010

Check out the new Sky+HD box for £249. It will store up to 1TB worth of data. That’s four times more storage than its predecessor, or to put it another way, 10 days of High Definition programs. On one hand, that’s awesome, on the other, who has time to watch it all?

Similar to the previous Sky+HD box, this model is also compatible with Sky 3D, which is being readied for release later this year along with Sky’s on-demand service. If you do have time to watch it all, it will store every second of it. Maybe take a ten day vacation and catch up on all your TV.
