Nintendo 3DS launches in Japan

Posted in Nintendo 3DS by Conner Flynn on February 27th, 2011

Sadly we can’t head out to our local GameStop for another month yet, but the Nintendo 3DS had a launch in Japan today. Reports indicate that the entire initial shipment of 400,000 gaming handhelds were sold. Some of the lines were up to 2,000 people long.

But those lines were only at a few places as most Japanese retailers sold out when the 3DS went on pre-order over a month ago. The device is already a success, though that isn’t surprising. We all love our Nintendo.

Posted in 3D by Conner Flynn on February 22nd, 2011

If you somehow thought that the last Transformers movie was good, then you’ll no doubt want to see Transformers: Dark of the Moon this summer. You’ll also likely want to add $10 to the cost of each ticket, since Hasbro is offering these Transformers Cine-Mask 3D glasses.

They will be selling these in stores before the movie’s release and they are available in Optimus Prime and Bumblebee versions. The masks each have a standard set of RealD 3D glasses, which makes them suitable for most theaters out there and other 3D movies. Sadly there’s no adult sizes available.

Sony demos 3D dual-view split screen 3D gaming

Posted in Sony by Conner Flynn on February 22nd, 2011

Sony recently demonstrated some new technology that lets different people see different images on a TV screen, depending on what angle they are viewing the TV from. They are calling it dual-view and the technology will allow users to compete in multiplayer games without having a split screen.

There are other potential uses as well, like the ability to watch 2 TV shows at the same time, on the same screen, even though audio would need to be split using headphones or something.

The Nintendo 3DS was torn apart before it was even official and now a Chinese site has been able to get their hands on another 3DS before the official release in Japan. They have done their own teardown, revealing all its secrets.

Tearing apart devices is fun and can’t be done too many times after all. The official launch of the Nintendo 3DS will be March 27 in the US with the console priced at $249.99. Europe will get it a few days earlier, for an unknown price.

Samsung demonstrates new 3D SmartTV that won’t cause dizziness

Posted in 3D by Conner Flynn on February 20th, 2011

There’s why it doesn’t cause dizziness, because you can’t take your eyes off of those cute gals on either side. I’m assuming that’s the reason, anyway. Samsung has demonstrated its latest 3D Smart TV in Korea. It comes with a variety of interactive features and media accessible via Samsung’s Smart HUB. This allows you to enjoy VOD content, use Skype or GTalk, YouTube and will also give you access to any of your media on external devices or on your network (DLNA).

And you can control your TV viewing experience directly from your Samsung Android Smartphone or your GalaxyTab Tablet. Sounds like a winner to us already, but it gets even better. Samsung has announced that this TV will feature new 3D glasses with Active shutter, which have been improved to reduce dizziness and eye fatigue. Which likely means that headaches will be reduced as well.

Samsung hopes to sell 10 million 3D TVs this year, LG 5 million

Posted in Samsung by Conner Flynn on February 19th, 2011

You and I have simple dreams. Pay the bills, take care of kids, watch some good TV, maybe go out and have fun once in a while. Folks like Samsung have bigger hopes and dreams, like wanting to sell 10 million 3D TVs this year. That would be up five times from the two million it sold last year, so the goal is ambitious.

LG is keeping it more real, planning to sell 5 million or so. We are guessing they won’t reach these numbers as a result of consumer demand for 3D, but more likely because almost all new TVs will be 3D-capable. In the end, they don’t care how they do it, as long as they have the sales and the bragging rights.

Killzone 3 PS3 game leaked online before release

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on February 14th, 2011

We’ve all been waiting for Killzone 3 to arrive. The game looks amazing and should outdo Killzone 2 in sales and overall awesomeness. But now 41.4GB worth of files have been leaked to Torrent sites containing Guerrilla Games’ upcoming first-person shooter for the PlayStation 3.

The game isn’t due to be released until Feb. 22nd. That’s a problem obviously. But it isn’t all bad news for Sony. Only hacked PS3 consoles will be able to play the game. The 41.4GB file contains the European version of the game and a rumored second non-3D version is making the rounds at roughly half the size.

YouTube to support 3D mobile uploads

Posted in 3D by Conner Flynn on February 14th, 2011

YouTube and LG has announced that it will start accepting mobile uploads in 3D, allowing users to share 3D videos. LG’s Optimus 3D will be the first to have the option, with its glasses-free display, allowing it to support much of the 3D content that it records.

We don’t have any specific details, but it should mean that any device with stereoscopic 3D should support it too. This move will allow amateur 3D video to be easily spread and distributed via Youtube for us all to see.
