Toshiba LCD panel does 2D and 3D images at the same time

Posted in Toshiba by Conner Flynn on June 4th, 2010

Toshiba has an LCD panel which is capable of converting a 2D image partially to a 3D image, where it can then be viewed with the naked eye without the need for an extra pair of special glasses. This LCD panel is compatible with the “integral imaging method” developed by Toshiba and boasts nine viewpoints within a 12″ display at 1,400 x 1,050 resolution for 2D images in full screen and 466 x 350 for 3D images in full screen.

The 3D images are made possible thanks to the “GRIN (gradient index) lens” that changes the distribution of refraction indexes by controlling the gradient of liquid crystal molecules. Turning on the second panel allows You to show 2D images and 3D images simultaneously.

NVIDIA delays 3D Vision Surround driver launch

Posted in NVIDIA by Shane McGlaun on May 20th, 2010

NVIDIA and ATI are always battling each other to be first with products. It’s common for one of the companies to launch something and then the other to come out with something similar shortly after. Such is the case when ATI launched its multi screen tech. NVIDIA announced its own called 3D Vision Surround.

NVIDIA announced today on its official blog that the driver to enable 3D Vision surround has been delayed. The driver was originally expected in April and NVIDIA has now announced that it will not have the driver ready until the end of June.

Nintendo 3DS to be Widescreen?

Posted in Nintendo 3DS by Conner Flynn on May 17th, 2010

An FCC filing submitted by Nintendo and Mitsumi, appears to be for the new Nintendo 3DS handheld. It seems to suggest widescreen portable gaming. The image is likely a testbed for the Nintendo 3DS. The FCC report it showed up in is for its wi-fi system, but those two screens stand out.

The bottom one looks like the existing bottom screen on the Nintendo DS, but that top screen is widescreen. Keep in mind that this is all bound to change. What you see is used for testing. If that is a widescreen on top, then when the 3DS arrives, it will have a matching one below it.

Nintendo 3DS handheld to have switchable 2D mode

Posted in Nintendo 3DS by Conner Flynn on May 10th, 2010

Nintendo DSi 3DS announcementGood news for fans of “backward compatibility”. Nintendo’s new 3DS handheld won’t force you to play in 3D. 3D gameplay can be switched off. The confirmation comes directly from Nintendo president Satoru Iwata. So if you experience headaches or nausea, no worries. Just switch it off.

It’s good to have the option. We suspected as much, but now we know for sure. How many times can you see Bowser jump out of the screen anyway? 2D is True-D that’s what I say. Bah-humbug.

Samsung W960 is the first AMOLED 3D display phone

Posted in 3D by Conner Flynn on May 9th, 2010

Damn you Avatar, look what you’ve done. Now everything has to be in 3D. Now Samsung is getting ready to introduce the world’s first mobile phone featuring a 3D display. The Samsung W960 is expected to support a 3.2-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen that will display 3D images without the need of any special 3D glasses.

Looks like this is just for the South Korean market for right now. The W960 is powered by Samsung TouchWiz 2.0, will support HSPA, DMB-T TV tuner, Bluetooth and microSD card slot. Nothing yet on the release date or the price, and we have no idea when the phone would be made available outside of South Korea.

3D Motorola “Ming” clamshell

Posted in 3D by Conner Flynn on April 27th, 2010

Motorola’s 3D “Ming” clamshell is 3D capable. We know that because of a patent that appeared a few weeks ago, showing a clamshell that displays 2D content on each screen, but when closed the two screens together turn 3D.

We can’t be completely sure that this is the exact same phone as the one in the patent, but word on the street says it is. If Motorola is using the same parallax barrier technology that Nintendo’s said to be using in its 3DS handheld, could Moto be focusing more on games?

Posted in 3D by Conner Flynn on April 8th, 2010

Mitsubishi has announced three new lines of “affordable” 3D Home Cinema TVs. The most interesting model is the 82-inch DLP with 3D for just under $4,000. Sure DLP will bulk it up some, but if that’s a trade off you are willing to make, that’s not a bad price.

The WD-82738 adds StreamTV Internet Media, with applications like Pandora to Vudu to NY Times. The WD-82838 is another 82-inch set for $4,500, which also includes Immersive Sound Technology, and an integrated 16-speaker 5.1 surround sound system.

Nintendo 3DS concept turns up

Posted in Concepts by Shane McGlaun on April 5th, 2010

Other than playing games on my iPhone, I have never had a real desire for mobile gaming. My son has a PSP (which he never plays) and a Nintendo DS, which gets player a lot. I just stick with the iPhone.

The announcement of the coming Nintendo 3DS has me intrigued though. I especially like that you don’t need glasses for 3D games. We aren’t sure what screens the device will use at this point or even what it will look like, but I hope it looks like this concept.

With games looking this good, the iPhone may have some serious competition. Game developers are sure paying attention to the Windows Phone 7 platform now if they weren’t before.
