Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on August 1st, 2010

The ARCTIC GYM is for people without a Wii who still want to workout at home with interactive peripherals. The Arctic Gym includes an interactive exercise mat that allows you to keep fit, lose weight and burn calories. This video game system detects your movements and measures your performance and fitness progress.

The mat is basically thirty pressure sensitive pads with sensors detecting feet and body positions. When the system recognizes your movements, it is translated on-screen, so it can track and display real-time movements.

Ahoy pirates, listen up. Nintendo will be increasing the piracy protection on their latest DS handheld, the Nintendo 3DS over the previous model of the Nintendo DS. According to THQ VP Ian Current, the DS market and especially the DS Lite had been affected by piracy, so they are hoping that the new security will put a stop this.

I’m sure it will slow pirating down, but sooner or later someone will get around it.

Takara Tomy RC Mario Karts

Posted in R/C Toys by Conner Flynn on June 26th, 2010

Mario Kart is now in 3D, as in these are real life rc Mario Karts that you can race. The action isn’t limited to the screen anymore thanks to Takara Tomy of Japan, offering real life RC Mario Karts. The controller actually contains items that you can throw at other players including the usual green shell, red shell and banana peel.

If you throw a banana, an IR light will show up on your rear so that whoever hits it will crash off course just like in the video game. Sounds like a lot of fun.

The ZTE X850 is the first Android-powered handset from ZTE and will target the entry-level market instead of the high end like most of the recent Android phones. The specifications aren’t too bad, except for the small 2.8″ 320 × 240 resolution touchscreen display.

Nintendo 3DS might support digital newspapers and magazines

Posted in Nintendo 3DS by Conner Flynn on June 22nd, 2010

When you think of a Nintendo handheld, you rightly think gaming, but the new 3DS might just support reading newspapers and magazines too. Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata has said that the company is looking at ways to automatically beam newspaper and magazine articles to a 3DS handheld.

The 3DS is fully capable of receiving data while in sleep mode, after all. It could automatically connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot, and download the material of your choice. Then again this device still has a small screen and not so great resolution. It will be interesting to see what it can do.

Camcorder shoots 3D home videos

Posted in 3D by Conner Flynn on June 18th, 2010

Aspiring 3D home video shooters can start filming their version of Avatar now. Hammacher Schlemmer is offering a 3D camcorder that is capable of recording 3D video at 640 x 480 pixel resolution. The interesting part is that users will be able to view the 3D content on the device’s screen, no 3D glasses required.

When you use a 4GB SD card, the camcorder uses both lenses and 3-megapixel sensor to record up to four hours of 3D video. You can also capture 2D and 3D still images and standard 2D videos. Not bad at all right?

The Belkin Conserve Insight can save you some money

Posted in Power Strips by Conner Flynn on June 16th, 2010

If you know what’s happening with your energy, then you have the power to change the way you do things and save some cash. You need to know just how much energy you use and where you’re using it. The new Belkin Conserve Insight is a $30 power-outlet adapter with a small screen that tells you just how much the item plugged into it is costing you.

Knowing is half the battle. The display can tell you just how much juice is being used by any device in watts, dollars or carbon dioxide. When you see how much money is going out the window, you’ll be inspired to change things around a bit and stop leaving things running when not using them.

Nintendo 3DS gets official

Posted in Nintendo 3DS by Conner Flynn on June 15th, 2010

At E3 today, Nintendo has made the 3DS official. The device looks sharp. At least the one they had on stage does. Looks a bit thicker, but we can’t be sure. There’s a 3D Depth Slider on the side to maximize or eliminate the 3D depth effect. The bottom screen is the only touchscreen, just like the original DS, but in this case with a 3.5-inch widescreen on top. There’s a slide pad for analog control and also an accelerometer and a gyroscope.

It sports a camera on the inside and two lenses on the outside for taking 3D photos with the device. But that isn’t it. The Nintendo 3DS is also capable of showing 3D Hollywood movies. The graphics look pretty sweet for a handheld, almost Wii-like.

There’s also the possibility of a 3D camera that could allow you to take photos and videos that will appear in 3D on the display. Other improvements include a better media player with hardware AAC and MP3 decoding.

Vivitek D795WT projector redefines short throw

Posted in Projectors by Shane McGlaun on June 10th, 2010

Usually when I see a short throw projector, you still need a good six feet or so to get a reasonably large image size on your screen or wall. That’s fine and good in some instances, but if you have a really small room you might want even shorter throw.

Vivitek has a new projector that makes those other short throw units look bad. The projector is called the D795WT and the little beastie can toss a 95-inch image on the screen from only 1.3-feet away. In addition to the short throw, the projector is also 3D ready.
