Acer Aspire Z5763 all-in-one with 3D screen, gesture control

Posted in Acer by Conner Flynn on April 28th, 2011

The Acer Aspire Z5763 is ready to pump out stereoscopic 3D images to NVIDIA 3D Vision specs, and it also uses its 2 megapixel webcam for a Kinect-like gesture recognition system that Acer calls “AirControl.” So, even though it looks like your typical All-in-one, it is clearly not. Soon you’ll be navigating through movie lists with simple gestures.

It features a 23-inch, 120Hz LCD screen that displays content at 1080p, Intel’s latest Sandy Bridge processors, NVIDIA GeForce GT 440 or 435M graphics, a Blu-ray drive, up to 2TB of storage and 16GB of DDR3 memory. It also has built-in stereo speakers with virtual surround sound to go with your 3D, and an optional TV tuner.

Samsung RF712 gaming laptop

Posted in Samsung by Conner Flynn on April 27th, 2011

Samsung claims that the screen on its new RF712 gaming laptop will have the best brightness that you can buy, which helps to overcome the dimming effect of wearing 3D glasses. The 17.3-inch screen uses the same Super Bright Plus technology as its Series 9 laptop, but with an added bonus, higher Full HD resolution.

The brightness is 400-nits. That’s about double that of an average LCD. Other specs include a second generation quad-core Intel CPU, 2GB AMD HD6650M graphics, a roomy 750GB hard drive and USB 3.0. The RF712 will hit South Korea on May 2nd for the equivalent of $2,400. No word on when it might reach the US.

Sony announces S1 and S2 dual-screen Honeycomb tablets

Posted in Sony by Conner Flynn on April 26th, 2011

Sony has announced a pair of Android 3.0 tablets. The first is the 9.4-inch S1 media tablet (also known as the Qriocity focused) with a curved top similar to a folded book or magazine with both front and rear cameras. The S1 features a Tegra 2 SoC and customized “Quick and Smooth” touch panel UI with “Swift” web browser. As a bonus, it can also be used as a remote for your Sony gadgets, which is handy.

The dual-screen device looks like a sexed up 3DS. That’s the S2, which features a pair of 5.5-inch 1,024 x 480 pixel displays, Tegra 2 SoC, and a camera. It uses a custom book-style UI layout for the e-reader app, email and others. Both are PlayStation Certified and are WiFi and 3G/4G “compatible”. I can’t wait to see what Sony does with gaming on a tablet. How will these interact with the PS3? We should see a release in the fall, maybe sooner.

Nintendo 3DS design flaw leaving scratches on the screen?

Posted in Nintendo 3DS by Conner Flynn on April 19th, 2011

Looks like Nintendo 3DS owners are complaining of another problem now. A design flaw that scratches the upper display when doing nothing more than carrying the console around. According to posts on Nintendo’s support forums, the console design leaves the raised edges of the touchscreen rubbing against the top display.

The marks it leaves will rub off for the most part, but some owners have permanent scratches left there. 3Ds owners have also noticed D-pad cracks, where the top section has been squeezed down onto the controls. Speculation is that the rubbers stoppers are to blame and that Nintendo didn’t use a tough enough version.

Nintendo responds to 3DS headache complaints, says take a break

Posted in Nintendo 3DS by Conner Flynn on March 31st, 2011

Some gamers have been complaining about headaches and eyestrain when playing the new 3DS console. It seems like it is only a few users right now who are having trouble playing games on the console comfortably. But Nintendo’s UK PR head Rob Saunders says that the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and that a risk of discomfort comes with the territory when you are talking 3D content.

Like with any activity that is strenuous on the eyes, he advises that people take breaks. Maybe they could use that break time to go outside and enjoy some nature. Watch a butterfly glide on the breeze, if you know what such a creature is. Feel the warm sun on your pale gamer skin. Whatever. Just don’t stare at a tiny screen all day and you should be fine.

Google Fiber project picks Kansas City for 1Gbps Internet

Posted in Google by Conner Flynn on March 30th, 2011

Google has made its pick for the Google Fiber project today and said that it will first roll out the 1Gbps Internet access in Kansas City, Kansas. Good news for folks there. The city was picked from about 1,100 candidates in all. The service should go live in 2012 if the Board of Commissioners signs on.

The project is basically a real-world way to test the future of high speed Internet connections. We need to prepare and a 1Gbps connection has more than enough bandwidth for streaming 3D video and other tasks that lie ahead. More bandwidth opens up a lot of possibilities. Real-time telemedicine, remote education, and perfect quality video conferencing to name a few.

Nintendo 3DS costs about $100 to build

Posted in Nintendo 3DS by Conner Flynn on March 29th, 2011

It’s always interesting to know how much a device costs to actually build, compared to what you pay for it and what it is capable of. In the case of the now available Nintendo 3DS, research firm iSuppli has the answers.

They have taken a 3DS apart to figure it all out. The most expensive parts inside are the Sharp screens estimated at $38.80. The processor is about $10, and the memory subsystem costs about $8.36. The user interface with a gyroscope costs $6.81, $5.00 for a WLAN system, $4.70 for the cameras, and about $3.50 for the battery system. The total cost is…

Tons of used 3DS consoles in Japanese stores

Posted in Nintendo 3DS by Conner Flynn on March 28th, 2011

The 3DS just went on sale over the weekend here in the US, but the console has been available in Japan since February 26. But are they tired of it yet? It’s starting to look that way. Japanese retail blogs are reporting that the handheld keeps being sold back to stores.

That isn’t good news for Nintendo. So, what is the reason? The black screen of death? Well, it seems that there are many reasons that users are ditching the console. There’s the lack of good games for one, even though that will change. Maybe there is just a general disappointment after the buildup.

Nintendo 3DS suffering from Black Screen Of Death?

Posted in Nintendo 3DS by Conner Flynn on March 28th, 2011

The Nintendo 3DS hit the UK last Friday and here in the US this weekend, and it looks like 3DS owners are already reporting problems with Nintendo’s new handheld. Some folks over at GoNintendo even experienced the problem, which is dubbed the ‘black screen of death’.

We aren’t sure how widespread the problem is or how many users have experienced it, but if you are one of them, let us know. This isn’t exactly what you want your new gear to do after you have just bought it. Hopefully Nintendo is looking into the issue.

Real Racing 2 HD for iPad 2 can run on your TV at full 1080p

Posted in iPad by Reuben Drake on March 27th, 2011

When Apple unveiled the iPad 2, they also advertised a new video converter that was designed to mirror whatever is displayed on the tablet’s screen to an external HDMI display by upscaling content to full HD 1080p resolution. This one plays nice with any third-party app and when it comes to games, the $39 Apple Digital AV Adapter upscales graphics from the iPad’s native 1024 by 768 pixel resolution to full HD 1920 by 1080 resolution.

That means you won’t have those annoying black bars on your screen. Don’t you hate those? The PowerVR SGX543MP2, the GPU unit of the A5 chip can drive full 1080p 3D graphics. TouchArchade says that the next update to Firemint’s Real Racing 2 HD will enable full 1080p video output in 30 frames per second. That’s without upscaling.

Nintendo wants all 3DS games playable in 2D

Posted in Nintendo 3DS by Conner Flynn on March 24th, 2011

You know that slider on the side of the 3DS? It adjusts the 3D aspect to the user’s preference. And although the 3DS’ screen doesn’t force you to wear glasses, it does have to be held at just the right angle to get the most out of the 3D effect. And there are many of us who would just want to use it for plain old 2D gaming. So it’s good to know that Nintendo now says that no game should require 3D as part of its gameplay mechanics. And frankly that’s just a good rule of thumb for making a good game if you ask us.

Hideki Konno, one of Nintendo’s producers says that the company wants all of its 3DS games to be playable in 2D, reducing the 3D aspect to an aesthetic enhancement. Some might feel ripped off, but what did you expect? Nintendo wants to please the mass market, otherwise people will soon tire of the 3DS, like they did with the Wii. Novelties wear off quickly.
