Augmented Reality Cyber Maid Alice for lonely nerds
Humanity has accomplished some amazing things by combining virtual reality with plain ole reality. This is not one of those things. This is something designed to give randy nerds a few cheap thrills. The idea is that if you can’t find a girlfriend, Alice will take a shot at being the object of your affections.

It’s called “Dennou Figure ARis”, or “Cyber Figure Alice” in plain English. Buyers get the AR software, 2 cybersticks and 2 cybercubes. Place one of the cubes in front of the computer, point your webcam at it and the screen will display a 3D image of Alice standing on top of the cube. Here’s where your cybersticks come in handy. You’ll use them to touch, caress, fondle and peep at your new lady. Fear not, you can of course even undress Alice and change her clothes.

Samsung 2263DX 22-inch display with 7-inch LCD Grafted on

Posted in Samsung by Shane McGlaun on April 25th, 2008

Samsung 2263DX LCDIf the Samsung 2263DX 22-inch LCD is Dr. Evil, the small 7-inch LCD grafted onto it would definitely be Mini Me. The idea is that the main 22-inch screen can be used for normal work and the secondary 7-inch screen can be used to extend your desktop to keep other stuff visible.

I guess you could use the little screen for IM applications, RSS feeds, and TV watching or other things. The 7-inch screen attaches to the main display via an arm that allows it to be mounted to either side of the main display or above it. The small display connects to the main display via a mini USB cable so you don’t need to directly connect the small screen to your computer.

Princeton group breaks encryptions with canned air

Princeton researchers Seth Schoen and Jacob Appelbaum find encryption hack by freezing memoryA group at Princeton University has found an exploit in common computer hardware that allows them to break codes and retrieve the encrypted data stored on the computers hard disks. The process at its most extreme involves direct access to the computer using a can of compressed air held upside down to freeze the DRAM chip(s) to access the encryption key stored in memory.

When stored data is encrypted, the software usually will use a key to encode and decode the data. That key is most often created and stored into a computer’s memory after a user logs into the computer with a password. According to the researchers, a common misconception is that once the computer is turned off, the DRAM memory disappears and so does the encryption key. In their studies, partially funded by the Dept. of Homeland Security, they found that data is actually retained in the computers memory for many seconds or sometimes even minutes after the computer is turned off. They also found that by freezing the memory chips with liquid nitrogen found in a common can of air for removing dust, they could get the data to remain in memory easily for as long as ten minutes, and often longer.

Apple to offer Fox movies on iTunes

Posted in Apple,Digital Video,News,iTunes by Darrin Olson on December 27th, 2007

Apple planning to announce a deal to Fox to offer movie downloads on iTunesAccording to the Financial Times, Apple is finally getting ready to announce a deal with Twentieth Century Fox to offer Fox movies available for download through iTunes. The service would allow users to download Fox movies as a temporary digital “rental”. According to the source Fox is also working out a feature on their physical DVD movies that would let DVD owners temporarily transfer the movie content from the DVD to a digital player like an iPod or a computer using Apple’s DRM.

This is something that Apple has been trying to get going for a while but has met some resistance with most studios, likely for fear of losing sales due to a higher piracy rate of movies and lower costs of ownership. Another issue is the threat that this poses to video on demand services from places such as Comcast and DirectTV. Apple currently sells some movie titles on iTunes from Disney and Viacom but has not had as much luck getting the ball rolling with video as it has with online music purchases, which more that likely has led to a rental offering.

Space Navigator is a mouse like no other

Posted in Mouse by Conner Flynn on December 10th, 2007

Space Navigator

This might very well be the future of the computer mouse. The Space Navigator will let you pan, zoom, rotate and do all kinds of stuff that you can’t do with your typical mouse. The idea is that through pressure sensing technology, it will allow the controller cap to become a virtual extension of the user.

You can push, pull, twist or tilt the cap to simultaneously pan, zoom and rotate 3D imagery. When you increase pressure it will go fast and when pressure is decreased you can make fine intricate adjustments. This is particularly good for architects and artists. It’s only $59 for educational use, but if you want to spend $99, it comes comes with an unlimited use license for commercial purposes, as well as full phone, email and online support.

Apple Design USB Speakers

Posted in Speakers,USB by Reuben Drake on November 8th, 2007

Apple SpeakersMaybe this company just likes making speakers shaped like fruit or maybe they’re taking a more welcome route of latching onto the Apple popularity as apposed to throwing the letter “i” in front of their product name, but either way these speakers look kinda’ cool.

When put together the two channel, 1W speakers are held in place by magnets and they are in fact shaped like an Apple and have no affiliation to Apple the company. The speakers are powered by a USB connection from your computer and connect sound through a standard 3.5mm audio jack from your computer or just about any mp3 player. They come on colors of red or green and measure, well, about the size of an apple at 112x104x56mm each. The Apple Design speaker set runs about 25 Euros, (~$36 USD) on Ebay.de.

Audiovox’s $20 MP3 player – MP6512

Audiovox MP6512 512MB MP3 PlayerAudiovox has an affordable MP3 player with a 512MB capacity for only $19.99, losing the frills found in many of the latest media players and providing bare-bones portable tunes.

The Audiovox MP6512 supports MP3 and WMA (and protected WMA) files, has a nice OLED display that shows the track playing, and a fairly small case measuring 2.4 inches long and .8 inches thick.

Transfer the music files via a USB connection to your computer, and I guess I was a little off with the bare-bones comment. The MP6512 does have an built-in equalizer with …
