verbatimsurefire-sbYears ago, you could find some Windows PCs that had FireWire ports and if you really want a FireWire port today you can probably still find some PCI cards that will add them. For the most part the FireWire port is something that you find on Mac computers today.

Verbatim has announced a new external hard drive line called the SureFire series that sports both FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 connectivity. The drive is compatible with Mac and Windows PCs. When used with a USB port no external power adapter is needed.

Posted in iBuyPower by Shane McGlaun on March 10th, 2009

ibuypowerdesktop-sbGaming computers tend to be very expensive systems that pack all sorts of the latest technology into a machine designed to allow gamers to play games. At CES this year one of the coolest things I saw on display was the NVIDIA 3D vision 3D system. The system includes glasses and requires a special monitor to operate but provides slick and realistic 3D effects.

Boutique gaming desktop maker iBuyPower has announced a pair of new gaming desktops that are bundled with everything you need for 3D gaming at great prices. The machines include the Gamer Fire 640 and the Gamer Paladin F830. The Gamer Fire 640 runs an AMD Phenom II X3 720 CPU, 4GB of RAM, 500GB HDD, NVIDIA 9800GTX+ graphics and 64-bit Vista all for an MSRP of $1,349.

Posted in Topps by Shane McGlaun on March 9th, 2009

toppsbaseballcard-sbWhen I was young I spent one summer collecting all of the baseball cards I could get my hands on. Not so much because I really enjoyed watching baseball, but because I found out that baseball cards can be worth big money. Sadly, the year I collected pretty much sucked and now I have all cards sitting around that are worthless.

Topps has a new line of baseball cards that offer something those old holographic cards couldn’t imagine. When you hold, the new Series I cards up to a webcam you will see a 3D avatar of the player on the card on the computer screen.

Review: Clarion MiND mobile internet navigation

Posted in Review by Darrin Olson on February 8th, 2009

Clarion MiND hands on reviewThe Clarion MiND appears to be a GPS navigation device at heart, but expanded into a special type of mobile internet hybrid device packed with connectivity and applications bringing dangerously close to a mobile PC, but just not quite. The mobile device has many addition features such as an internet browser, YouTube viewer, media player, file storage, weather, news, maps and of course navigation but runs its own type of hard-wired OS that leaves little for customizations.

The MiND is basically a small mobile computer running on an 800 MHz Intel Atom processor with 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage (with an additional MicroSD card slot) and connects to the world via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and of course GPS. It also houses a couple of USB ports for connecting and transferring data, a headphone jack, speaker and docking port for an included dash mounting kit.

Ants now invading scanners, laptops may be next

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on August 3rd, 2008

Many of us go to extreme measures in order to keep pests out of our homes. Normally they’ll head straight for any crumbs that you’ve left on your floor or just blindly enter your dwelling as if for no apparent reason. They are easy enough to take care of. Start stomping or call in the verminators. But what do you do when insects start invading your tech?

One couple started noticing ants on their computer desk. They couldn’t quite figure out where they were coming from. There didn’t seem to be a problem anywhere else nearby. As you can see in the video, the work area is very clean. So the wife discovers that the printer isn’t working. The guy checks it out and finds that a small invading ant army had taken up residence in the scanner area. Pretty weird and makes you wonder where else they are that you don’t know about.

Augmented Reality Cyber Maid Alice for lonely nerds

Augmented Reality Cyber Maid Alice for lonely nerds
Humanity has accomplished some amazing things by combining virtual reality with plain ole reality. This is not one of those things. This is something designed to give randy nerds a few cheap thrills. The idea is that if you can’t find a girlfriend, Alice will take a shot at being the object of your affections.

It’s called “Dennou Figure ARis”, or “Cyber Figure Alice” in plain English. Buyers get the AR software, 2 cybersticks and 2 cybercubes. Place one of the cubes in front of the computer, point your webcam at it and the screen will display a 3D image of Alice standing on top of the cube. Here’s where your cybersticks come in handy. You’ll use them to touch, caress, fondle and peep at your new lady. Fear not, you can of course even undress Alice and change her clothes.
