Transparent Sony VAIO X spottedCheck out Sony’s new thin-and-light VAIO X, but this is no ordinary VAIO X, it’s practically invisible. This guy made its debut at a press event in China today. A surprisingly transparent edition of the laptop. And before you ask, no you will likely never see this on store shelves.

So if you wanted to see it’s inner workings, this is your best chance. You certainly wouldn’t want to spend upwards of $1,300 for this thing only to take it apart. Of course, that is half the fun.

Obama DS Lite
While we’re waiting with bated breath for a possible new updated Nintendo DS model that has been rumored, we thought we would take a look at some of our favorite DS mods. Like the Wii, modders love to spice up Nintendo’s boring design and put their own personal touches on the device. Some are weird, some are awesome, some will make you wonder what’s in the modder’s local water supply, but all are creative.

The USB home pregnancy test

USB home pregnancy test
Let’s see if I have this right. You pee on the stick same as usual… Then you plug it into your USB port like you let the potential daddy plug it into you… We really have to stop using the USB port for every damn thing people.

So when you plug it in you get all kinds of data about what’s in your urine, other then the fact that this is all highly unsanitory. Sure, any other home pregnancy test will let you know if you have a bun in the oven, but with this you can get fancy charts and graphs…from your pee. It will cost you $17.99 if it’s not a late April Fool’s joke.

Sense Light Swing: playgrounds go high tech

Sense Light Swing: playgrounds go high tech
The playground has looked the same for all of eternity. But no more. They, like everything else, are about to go high tech. Children everywhere will be driving starships not long after, probably. The Sense Light Swing is a fully illuminated swing, threatening to turn that boring old playground into a light show.

One problem though. How many parents do you know who would let their kid go to the local playground after dark? Sure, you could go with them, but that would mean parenting and that aint what you had a kid for now is it? Plus, your shows are on at night. The technology behind the Sense Light Swing is simply fiber optic strands, and nothing more, so we don’t have to worry about swing speeds being upgraded or the like anytime soon, thank God.

Okoro ZX100 Home Theater PC in automotive colors
This HTPC has some really nice specs, which include a quad-core Intel processor at 3GHz, 3GB of RAM and NVIDIA’s GeForce 8600GT with HDMI out and PureVideo HD support. Plus, you can get the unit in the color of any automotive paint you want from a basic glossy black to $10k gold-flaked. Nice!

It’s also got a 32GB SSD drive for the OS and a 1TB drive for media storage, although you’ll probably want to upgrade that to 2TB if your media collection is huge. It can also play both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray discs. Windows Vista Ultimate comes pre-installed and of course card readers and everything else you might expect. Which is good because the base price is just under $6k.

Altec Lansing MUZX earphones
Here’s something for all the girls who want some sparkle and shine. Much of the tech that’s geared toward women and girls looks pretty, but is lacking in the specs department. Not these earbuds from Altec Lansing.

These little earbuds feature enough Swarvoski Crystals to satisfy anyone who loves them plastered all over their tech. It has 9mm neodymium drivers and gold-plated plug for nice sound quality. They also have a snug fit for those with smaller ears and some passive noise reduction. Altec Lansing has them for $59.95, while Amazon is selling them at $29.95.

Consumption Feedback Switch shows energy usage

Consumption Feedback Switch shows your energy usage
If you are concerned about how much energy you are using, but are forgetful and need some encouragement, this little switch will give you a visual representation of how much energy you are using. The switch lights up only a little when you’re not using much energy and it shines brighter when you’re wasting too much.

What with energy being invisible, it’s easy to waste more then you intend to. So a visual reminder is just the thing. Not many other details on this one for the moment. Like how much of your house this will take care of, etc. It might be good if it were vocal though, “Turn off some lights you wasteful pig. What did you buy me for if you aren’t going to listen to me.” Nagging always gets things done after all, as any married person knows.

Cyber Smash Grip: Turn Wiimotes into DualShocks

Cyber Smash Grip: Turn Wiimotes into DualShocks
The “magic wand” aspect of the Wiimote may offer better and more realistic control over some games, but many games use the Wiimote in the more traditional old school way. So the question is, how do you make the wiimote more comfortable to use with two hands?

Answer. Just shove it into a new body that makes the D pad an “analog” stick with two DualShock-like grips. Slip it on and off easily. A nice simple solution for games like Super Smash Bros. It may not look super sexy, but it gets the job done.

Delkin ImageRouter connects many, many CF cards

Posted in Card Readers by Darrin Olson on February 1st, 2008

Delkin ImageRouter connects multiple CompactFlash cards at once for downloadDelkin has a new CompactFlash card reader they are showing off this week called the ImageRouter. This device solves the problem of photographers having to download multiple CF cards to a computer after a shoot. The ImageRouter doesn’t really make the actual transfer happen any faster but what it does do is allow the multiple cards to do their transfer simultaneously so you don’t have to watch it and swap them out when each are done.

As if loading 4 of the cards at a time is not enough Delkin says that if you buy more than one you can daisy-chain them together with two ImageRouters letting you download 8 CF cards at the same time. Delkin doesn’t elaborate on their site on just how many can be connected at a time but does say that you can connect “two or more” and also mentions that the ImageRouter will help whether you have “four or fourteen CompactFlash cards”. We’re guessing that after a few connected together things might get pretty slow and according to SlashGear three is the limit.

The card readers connect through a USB 2.0 connection and reach transfer speeds of 19MB/sec reads. Two ImageRouters connected slows it slightly with a 17MB/second read and 15MB/sec write speeds. Delkin is getting these card readers ready for purchase by April retailing at $149. The BackupandBurn software can be purchased with it in a bundle for $249, which helps with automatically routing and naming files during the transfer.
