Skiff Reader coming to a Sprint Store near you

Posted in ebooks by Conner Flynn on January 4th, 2010

I hear ya, Amazon’s Kindle DX is big. It is, but it’s not the biggest any more. The Skiff Reader is the biggest in town now at just a quarter inch thick. It features a 1600 x 1200 11.5-inch touchscreen (finger and stylus) that should be much better for magazine and newspaper layouts.

Skiff also has 4GB of on-board storage (with over 3GB available for content), SD card expansion, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Content can be loaded via a mini USB jack or through WiFi and 3G is also an option thanks to Sprint, who will sell the Skiff this year for an unknown price.

Insignia Dual Alarm Clock Radio with Photo Display

Posted in Clocks by Conner Flynn on December 22nd, 2009

Everybody hates alarm clocks. So most of us wouldn’t pay $49.99 for an alarm clock. But what if it had the ability to display pictures, a media card reader and 128MB of internal memory? That might be worth the money.

The Insignia Dual Alarm Clock Radio does just that while still keeping up with its alarm clock duties. It will display digital pictures on its 3.5-inch display. The only thing missing is an audio-in jack to turn it into a speaker. That would have really sold me.

Posted in BlackBerry by Conner Flynn on December 18th, 2009

BlackBerry Curve 8530 available on SprintThe Curve 8530 has now made it to Sprint. It will cost you $50 with a new contract after mail in rebate. This one features a 2.5-inch display, OS 5.0, 3.5mm headphone jack, and of course WiFi.

This one is a solid no nonsense device. without any pizazz. If you want some pizazz you can always paint it, dip it in gold or adorn it with some Swarovski crystals. Not that we condone any of that. Just sayin.

Multitouch Android Smartphone from OPPO

Posted in Android by Conner Flynn on December 16th, 2009

Multitouch Android Smartphone from OPPOPMP maker OPPO will launch their first Android-powered smartphone in the first quarter of 2010. It looks like it came right out of the future. The phone features a 3.5-inch WQGA (800 x 480) capacitive multitouch screen, a QWERTY keyboard, WiFi and of course the Android OS.

I guess the company must be pretty confident in their PMP player abilities to make the leap to smartphones. There really isn’t much info right now, but we like the design. Especially the slide-out (transparent?) display with edge lighting.

The earphones boast that they will deliver great quality over a wide range of music, as the enclosed structure reduces ambient noise and sound leakage. There’s nothing worse than sound leaking from your ears. They even feature a 24k gold-plated 3.5mm stereo mini-plug. They cost about $39 in Japan.

Posted in iPod Accessories by Shane McGlaun on December 10th, 2009

speakalmisoccer-sgSpeakal is known for its line of often strange iPod docks. As far as some of the Speakal designs go, the new miSoccer soccer ball iPod dock is fairly normal. The thing might be a great gift for the soccer fan.

The miSoccer has 23W of power with a 15W subwoofer and a pair of multi-way speakers that split the left over power. The speakers are arranged to give a 360-degree sound field. Controls for the music and track are located on top of the ball and are touch sensitive.

MD Sound unveils cheap MD-DVD3.5T car stereo

Posted in Radio by Shane McGlaun on December 9th, 2009

md35-t-sgEvery car I have owned for the last six years or so has had a double DIN stereo in it. I thought the single DIN stereo was outdated, but I guess there are enough cars out there that there is still a market. MD Sound has announced a new single DIN stereo called the MD-DVD3.5T with a color LCD and a low price.

The radio has a 3.5-inch LCD on a flip down panel that can play DVDs and other media from flash drives and SD cards. The radio supports DVD/DVD-R/MP3/MP4/VCD/CD/CD-R/CD-RW media. The radio also has a built-in AM/FM/MPX tuner.

Cassette iPod speakerCheck out this retro cassette speaker. The device will work with any MP3 player that has a 3.5 mm audio jack. Yes, it’s yet another thing that looks like a cassette tape. In this case, it’s a speaker. One that will immediately make your player look ugly, while adding some girth. But if you want some retro in an MP3 speaker, this thing will only cost you $19.99.

Ah, you’ve noticed that male receptacle hanging from the bottom of the cassette. Well, let me explain. When a cassette speaker loves an MP3 player very very much…

Dell unveils Vostro V13 notebook

Posted in Dell by Shane McGlaun on December 8th, 2009

vostrov13-sbI really like the Dell Adamo notebooks. Mostly I like them because they are thin and look great. I don’t like the price that Dell wants for the things though. If you are like me and would like to have the svelte looks of the Adamo at a price more like a netbook, the Vostro V13 is for you.

The thin machine is only 0.65-inches thick and weighs 3.5 pounds. Those dimensions are almost dead on for the Adamo machine. The best part is that the V13 will sell for only $450 when it hits the market. For that much money, you get a 13.3-inch screen and a Core 2 ULV processor.

Mintpass Cube MP3 player

Posted in MP3 by Conner Flynn on December 5th, 2009

Mintpass Cube MP3 playerThe Mintpass Cube MP3 player is for those who love reading meters. The 2 inch cube also sports push button controls, analog displays for volume, battery charge, and frequency, 3.5mm audio out, and Bluetooth. No word on storage capacity or price.

Call us geeks, but we see this MP3 player and we just can’t help wondering what a Borg ship would look like with a battery meter on the side. Of course the Federation would always know when Borg batteries are running low.
