Hulu coming to PlayStation network soon

Posted in Hulu by Conner Flynn on June 25th, 2010

It’s been about 3 weeks since we heard rumors of Hulu coming to the Xbox 360 and the iPad as a paid service, and now Bloomberg is saying that Hulu is also in talks to become part of Sony’s Playstation Network and appear on the PS3 “soon.”

Soon could mean next week or next month. We don’t know. Hulu on PS3 is said to be a paid service, but nothing is confirmed yet.

Gioteck HF-1 PS3 controller mixes Xbox DNA for comfort and style

Posted in Controllers,Games by Shane McGlaun on June 22nd, 2010

Some gamers get hooked on a specific control configuration when it comes to gaming and have a very hard time using anything else. Gioteck has announced a new Bluetooth PS3 controller called the HF-1 that uses the Xbox 360 controller layout.

The left analog stick and D-Pad are reversed from what a normal PS3 controller uses. The HF-1 does have some cool features. One of the cool features is a Flipswitch that changes the R1 and R2 positions for easy use.

GAEMS suitcase makes your Xbox 360 portable

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on June 20th, 2010

It isn’t very convenient to carry your Xbox 360 around for gaming on the go. However, that is about to change with the GAEMS Portable Console Gaming and Entertainment System. It carries an Xbox and a 15-inch, 720p LCD in the lid, along with speakers.

Just open your console and you’re ready to go. We aren’t sure if the power brick fits in there too. But we do know that your controllers will not fit. Sadly.

Gioteck In2Link for PS3 Slim announced

Posted in Accessories by Shane McGlaun on June 18th, 2010

I just mentioned that cool looking MX-2 remote control from Gioteck. I also mentioned that you would need an IR adapter of some sort for it to work. The good news is that Gioteck has one of those coming too.

The device is called the Gioteck In2Link for the PS3 Slim. It not only adds a wide angle IR receiver, but it also adds some lost connectivity. The device plugs into the two USB ports of the Slim and adds a third powered USB port.

Gioteck announces MX-1 remote for PS3

Posted in Accessories by Shane McGlaun on June 18th, 2010

Gioteck was unknown to me until this week when it pulled the wraps off the new EX-01 headset that is headed to the US. The company has now announced a new MX-1 Media Remote that will be coming to the States as well.

The new remote is designed to control the PS3 with full control for Blu-ray, DVD and the Cross Media Bar. The catch is that the remote is apparently an IR unit, which the PS3 can’t just pick up.

Posted in Turtle Beach by Shane McGlaun on June 15th, 2010

Turtle Beach has unveiled its latest headset for gamers called the Ear Force PBT. The Ear Force line has a ton of headsets in it and some of them offer surround sound and other special features for gaming. The special feature for the PBT is that it is a Bluetooth headset.

The PBT connects to the PS3 wirelessly and looks like a Bluetooth headset for a mobile phone. The device can pair with two devices at once. That means you can pair to your mobile phone and the PS3 allowing you to answer calls during the game.

500GB PlayStation 3 coming, with new Wi-Fi, Move

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on June 14th, 2010

An “industry source” speaking with games site CVG, says that Sony will release two new PS3 bundles this year, both including the PlayStation Move motion controller, and one of them featuring a huge 500 GB hard drive. One of the bundles will include a 250GB PlayStation 3 and the Move motion controller.

The other bundle will include a 500GB PlayStation 3 and the Move. That may be overkill. Then again, maybe Sony knows something we don’t. Maybe they have plans that take up a lot of space.

FCC listings point to new PS3 models

Posted in Sony by Shane McGlaun on June 11th, 2010

The PS3 has been around for a while now and the last time it was updated we ended up with the PS3 Slim. Since the thinner and cooler running version of the console turned up, we haven’t seen anything new from Sony on the PS3.

With E3 kicking off next week it appears that there is a chance we may have some announcements from Sony on new PS3 models. A couple new PS3 model numbers have come across the FCC.

PS3 and Xbox 360 to get price cuts this year?

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on May 11th, 2010

Word on the street is that PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 could get some price changes later this year. According to the rumor, Sony could be planning an entry-level £200 (or $295) version of the PS3 that offers a smaller hard drive with a single controller.

While the Microsoft side of the rumor says that it might include the upcoming Natal with the Xbox 360, though there is talk of a possible version of it without Project Natal going for less than £100 ($147). And IF the rumor is true, Nintendo is also looking at a price drop in order to compete with the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.

Sony selling ‘PlayStation Protection Plan’

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on May 4th, 2010

Sony’s game consoles are solidly built and super reliable, sure there’s the occasional issue, but they don’t exactly suffer the RRoD. Even so, things can happen. And if you’re willing to pay for peace of mind, Sony has a new service agreement.

The “PlayStation Protection Plan,” extends the full warranty on your PlayStation 3 or PSP for another year or two. Sony’s plan requires you to mail your system to Sony and wait for the repair or replacement system; GameStop’s warranty allows you to turn in your system and leave with a replacement. Apparently controllers and cables are included with the GameStop protection plan, while Sony only covers the system itself.

PS3 OtherOS class action lawsuit filed in the US

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on April 29th, 2010

You might remember that the 3.21 firmware update for Sony’s PlayStation 3 disables the OtherOS functionality from the console. That means that you can’t install Linux on it anymore. Hackers have been busy doing their thing and righting this wrong, trying to get the feature back on the console, but Anthony Venture on the other hand has filed a class action lawsuit against the company.

The lawsuit covers all PS3 consoles purchased from November 17th 2006 to March 27th 2010. The lawsuit calls for compensatory damages, restitution, injunctive relief and legal fees to be paid by Sony, and they are talking a $5 million figure.

Polaroid gets into the video game business

Posted in Polaroid by Conner Flynn on April 28th, 2010

Polaroid is a name that has long been associated with instant cameras. But now, headsets and battery packs for the Xbox 360, a dock for the Nintendo DS, sports packs and sensor bars for the Wii, and even controllers for the PS3 are being worked on by Polaroid.

Maybe next we’ll see a Polaroid camera peripheral for the Wii, so you can snap shots of your game and add them to your scrapbook. Hey, they have to make money somehow right?

Analyst predicts $299 slim Xbox 360/Project Natal bundle this year

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on April 14th, 2010

It doesn’t seem like much of a prediction, but Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter foresees a new slim Xbox 360 hardware configuration before 2011 rolls around. More specifically he thinks that the new slim version will feature a 250GB hard drive with Project Natal bundled with it, without any price reduction or increase.

That means you would be getting the bundle for the $299 price point. Unless of course, Sony lowers the price of the PS3. Then it may go down to compete with Sony.

PS3 owners may get cash back after OtherOS uninstall

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on April 9th, 2010

Even if you don’t run an alternative operating system on your PS3 you could potentially be getting some money under consumer protection laws. Apparently, Iapetus at the NeoGAF forums took the issue up with Amazon (who sold him the PS3), quoting a European consumer protection law that states all products bought must be “fit for the purpose which the consumer requires them and which was made known to the seller at the time of purchase,” netting him £84 ($130) in the process.

He didn’t have to return his PS3, nor be within warranty. Might be worth talking about with your retailer, if you still have the receipt. This particular law will only apply to you if you live in Europe. We aren’t sure if there are any similar laws in the US.

Sony PS3 update 3.21 removes “Other OS” feature

Posted in Sony by Shane McGlaun on March 29th, 2010

I have had a PS3 since the console launched and I have seen the other OS feature on the machine several times, but I have never used it. I bet that most of you are the same way.

If you do use the other OS feature for some reason you have a decision to make. Sony has Announced that the latest firmware update that is set to hit this week will eliminate the Other OS feature.
