Evo Smart Console is Linux-based

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on October 22nd, 2008

Evo Smart Console is Linux-basedThese days it’s unusual to hear about a new game console that isn’t from Sony, MS or Nintendo. But it looks like we have a new contender from Envizions Computer Entertainment. This is their first console, the Evo “Smart Console” which is available for pre-order. Interestingly, the console itself is basically a Linux-based computer.

Some specs include an overclocked Athlon 64×2 5600 processor and an ATI Radeon 3200 graphics card. Envizions sees the console being used as a development platform with a “cloud” computing system. What that means is that developers would have to make games specifically for the Evo “Smart Console.” Could that happen? They think so. The new console should ship on November 20th for about $600 and you can pre-order one now with a $100 deposit.

Comcast offers 22Mbps and 50Mbps connection speedsIf you’re a Comcast subscriber, here’s some good news for once. The company just announced today that they will be offering new higher-speed options. The upgrade to their DOCSIS 3.0 service will give you 22Mbps and 50Mbps download speeds with 5Mbps and 10Mbps upload speeds. Even the standard tiers have been upgraded.

The 6Mbps/1Mbps tier will be moved up to the 12Mbps/2Mbps tier. Likewise, the 8Mbps/2Mbps tier will be replaced with the 16Mbps/2Mbps tier. While the upgrades won’t cost you any extra, the two new speed tiers will. The 22Mbps tier is being called the “Ultra” and will cost $63 while the 50Mbps “Extreme 50″ tier will cost $140. The New England area will be the first to get the service, though they plan on expanding it across the nation.

Linksys DMA 2200 Media Center Extender connects with Windows Media CenterLinksys has released some scant information about two new Media Center Extenders that they have slated for launch in November, designed to extend the reach of the digital media on your computer through the Windows Media Center.

One problem that a lot of people have with digital media, especially high-def movies, on their computer is having a way to get it out of the room with the computer an into their entertainment center. These extenders avoid having to have a dedicated computer in your entertainment room by streaming the content to your TV or home stereo.

Apple Patent for iPhone nano?

Posted in Apple, News, iPhone by Chris Weber on July 5th, 2007

possible iPhone nano patent diagramWe had posted a few months ago about what we thought might be an iPhone Nano product from Apple, and here’s another one that could easily fit the name filed at the USPTO.

The patent digram shows a click wheel similar to existing iPods with a touchpad that shows the graphical images of a phone dial-like wheel with numbers and letters. It would make sense that just like the iPod has gotten smaller with time, Apple could cut out a few features and make a smaller, simpler but equally cool mobile phone. …

Apple Multi-Touch Mouse Patent Filing

Posted in Apple, Legal, Mouse by Chris Weber on July 5th, 2007

Apple patent filing for multi-touch mouseAccording to a filing with the USPTO it looks like Apple is looking to extend their touch screen technology beyond the iPhone and use it in a new mouse design.

According to the filing this mouse has a touch sensitive surface that works through a camera inside the mouse viewing an illuminated surface. The changes in illumination due to fingers on the mouse would indicate the “touches”, and pressing harder would signal things like a right or left button press, since this mouse has no buttons.

The touch sensitive mouse would then …

USPTO reveals PSP Phone

PSP Phone reveiled by drawing and us patent office websiteA recent patent application filing at the US patent office by Sony Ericsson reveals what looks to be a PSP phone. This does kinda’ make sense since everything is moving toward integrating with a mobile phone lately. Also, it’s been difficult to take a traditional mobile phone and integrate games with it, so why not go the other way around and integrate a phone into an existing mobile game design.

It looks like that’s what Sony Ericsson is up to. The PSP is already designed well …

Apple iPhone nano Patent ?

Posted in Apple, iPhone, iPod by Darrin Olson on May 10th, 2007

possibly iPhone nano type patent from AppleGadgets that need a somewhat-significantly sized interface for texting messages or dialing phone numbers can only get so small before they will just be too tiny for the average person to use, so what would a designer do when they’ve simply run out of space on the device? By looking at this patent found by Unwired it appears that Apple has an interesting solution.

Instead of trying to cram more buttons into a small area or re-purposing the same area, it appears that they are playing with idea of using both …
