Ovetto Recycling Egg looks hungry

Ovetto Recycling Egg looks hungryThe Ovetto Recycling Egg may not have landed with Mork From Ork, but it’s ready to help you recycle. It’s creator, Gianluca Soldi, has high hopes for the Ovetto as “an object that meets the needs of domestic waste separation in order to educate the population to correctly dispose of waste in order to be able to consequently recycle it.”

It not only fits easily in modern homes and offices, but it looks pretty damn awesome in a 2001: A Space Odyssey sort of way. It may be the neatest egg I’ve ever seen. And it’s good for the environment. The Ovetto is even made of recycled polypropylene. At £139.99 you really can’t go wrong with a futuristic egg. I’m just saying.

2011: A Wii HD Odyssey?

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on October 1st, 2008

2011: A Wii HD Odyssey?Cue 2001 theme, but think “2011: The Year Wii Makes Contact”. 2011 is three years from now. So you would expect a new Wii by then right? HD would be nice on a new console. Word is that they are showing off a Wii-HD to developers and publishers, who’ve nicknamed it “Wii HD”. Reportedly, the followup will stick with all of the motion control goodness and amp up graphics, digital distribution, local storage and even be backwards compatible.

The only hard evidence was cited by What They Play, and that is the fact that Nintendo’s R&D spending has grown greatly since the Wii’s launch. I don’t see that that makes the case for a new Wii by itself, but it’s not a stretch as they are surely looking toward the future of the Wii. Many of us would like to see some improvements now rather then later. Like storage for instance.

Coby CR-A78 alarm clock with built-in projector

Coby CR-A78 alarm clock with built-in projector
It’s no R2-D2 projector clock, but Coby’s CR-A78 alarm clock is pretty cool in it’s own right, having kind of a 2001/Robot head with a laser look. In addition to the built-in projector that creates a virtual red LED time display on the targeted surface, the clock also has an AM/FM tuner, music alarm option, and a timer function. When I first saw this I thought the price would be expensive, but it’s only a very cheap $13.50. This one will fit right in with all of your other Futuristic looking gadgets.

Atari 2600: A video game odyssey
I think there are two things in this universe that you can safely say that geeks love. Atari 2600 and Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Being a geek myself who loves both, this is exactly how I would have made the movie.

With a large Atari joystick as the monolith. This T-shirt is the work of Akron, Ohio illustrator psychoreindeer. Let’s face it, if an ancient civilization is going to search for intelligent life, it’s going to test you on your Atari skills.

Illuminating Table is like an open wormhole in your home

Illuminating Table is like an open wormhole in your home
The only way this table could possibly get any better would be if it were black. That way it would actually look like the monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey. If you forget about the legs anyway. Cinimod Studio’s Illuminating Table combines three dimensional arrays of interactive color movement controlled in real time by its environment.

You won’t have to use illegal substances to see pretty colors anymore, though I suppose if you do, you’ll just see more, maybe even freak out thinking you’re trapped inside the thing. Me, being the geek that I am, would put Star Trek ships on the table and pretend they’re getting sucked into a wormhole. Oh, and you could lay on it and thrash around, recreating several classic Sci-Fi scenes. Like Buck Rogers getting sucked into the future for instance.

2001 HAL TV still won’t open the pod bay doors

2001 HAL TV still won’t open the pod bay doors
Chauhan Studios and Humax displayed this awesome retro concept TV at the Milan Design Show. Yes, it was clearly inspired by the film 2001: A Space Odyssey. In fact, it’s name is HAL, so I’m guessing it’s got a secret mission it hasn’t told you about, which can only end with you going through a wormhole.

There’s an extra set of speakers in the base for richer sound and it looks like the designers wanted to keep things retro-authentic, having left out modern day HDMI/DVI connections. I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid you can’t buy it as it’s still a concept.

Robots of Battlestar Galactica
Sometimes the coolest gadgets in Sci-Fi are not gadgets at all. But robots. Here’s a look at some of the most memorable robots from sci-fi in no particular order. It’s not a complete list. Think of it more as a walk down memory lane. Because geeks love Sci-Fi and Sci-Fi has a long history of loving robots.

Class-action over Creative’s PMP hard-drive claims

Class-action over Creative’s PMP hard-drive claims
Much like car manufacturer’s claims about MPG, you aren’t going to get all the hard drive space that’s advertised on your devices, but it’s an issue that may haunt Creative at the moment. A class-action suit was filed against the company regarding the quoted capacity of their hard-drive based media players. It could potentially result in a huge settlement for anybody who bought a device between May 5th 2001 and April 30th 2008. Of course, Creative isn’t admitting any wrong-doing.

The suit alleges that Creative knowingly misled users by promising 7-percent more capacity from their PMPs than was actually even possible, and that they exaggerated the number of songs and the total length of playback in hours. Nothing has hit court yet, but if customers can prove they bought a Creative hard-drive based player in the seven year period, will be eligible for either a 50-percent discount on the price of a new 1GB PMP, or 20-percent off a single item bought from Creative’s US online store.

Gameboy boots for the gaming Disco Stu

Gameboy boots for the gaming Disco Stu
These gameboy boots certainly make a fashion statement. Something about how everything you love dies. Like Disco and Nintendo’s handheld, for instance. So why not combine the two in a space age Disco look and hit the dance floor?

These boots were designed by Helen Red Richards back in 2001 for a Nintendo campaign. Apparently the Japanese love them and wear them all the time. And why not? Nothing wrong with looking like a space cowboy. Plus, you’ll always have a pair of Gameboys handy for you and a friend.

Firefox logo spotted in space

Firefox logo spotted in space
Here’s an interesting image captured by the Hubble Space Telescope. It’s an image of the variable star V838 Monocerotis which lies near the edge of our Milky Way Galaxy. Yes, it looks like the Firefox logo. The red area also resembles HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssesy.

I picture the starship Enterprise investigating and ultimately finding that this area of space is some higher beings hard drive. “I find this highly illogical Captain. Sensors are also picking up signs of Windows Vista, which indicates that the entire region is unstable and could implode at any time.”

The Hamilton Code Breaker watch

The Hamilton Code Breaker watch
Hamilton introduced an awesome luxury watch for sci-fi fans at the BaselWorld 2008. The Hamilton Code Breaker is a watch with some amazing design and great level of detail. Just look at that square case and the dials within. Hamilton is not new to watches with a Sci-Fi flare.

They have enjoyed a long relationship with the science fiction movie genre, going back to 1968 when a desk clock was features in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. They also made the alien-shaped watches from Men in Black. Their watches aren’t for those on a Timex budget though, the Hamilton Code Breaker will set you back $1,995. And any geek knows that will buy you a lot of Star Trek or Star Wars toys.

LIP Mach 2000 Dark Master watch

LIP Mach 2000 Dark Master watch
This LIP Mach 2000 Dark Master watch is retro-awesome. The design is pretty true to the original, with the movement updated with more-modern quartz tech. The future looks about the same now as it did in the 70’s. It has a bit of a 2001:A Space Odyssey feel to it and it would also be right at home in any old James Bond movie.

If the candy-colored stems aren’t to your liking, there are more subdued color schemes, which all look pretty amazing. The $520 price tag might scare you, but awesomeness has it’s price.

Arthur C. Clarke dies at 90 years old in Sri LankaArthur C. Clarke, science fiction author and most famously known for his work on “2001: A Space Odyssey” and his early forecast of communication satellites, died Wednesday in Colombo, Sri Lanka at the age of 90.

Clarke wrote nearly 100 books in his lifetime dealing mostly with the future of science and the idea that the destiny of the human race lied somewhere beyond the Earth. His writings shaped the way many people thought about science and technology and inspired a wide range of individuals ranging from scientific astronomer Carl Sagan to Gene Roddenberry with Star Trek.

Citizen Astrodea Celestial watch is awesome

Posted in Watches by Conner Flynn on February 26th, 2008

Astrodea Celestial watch
To quote Dave Bowman from the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, “My God, it’s full of stars!”. A whole watch face that looks like the cosmos? Count me in. The Astrodea collection from Citizen looks sweet. The watch face has a 35° view of the heavens as seen from the Northern Hemisphere, which rotates in real time, showing 1,109 stars and 169 cluster galaxies. It has other features that include measurements like equinox indications, constellation markers, location of the sun, solar position, sunrise and sunset times and the daily duration of sunshine. That might be too much info for me, I just dig the looks.

It comes in both a blue or gold face version, with stainless steel case and band with non-reflective sapphire glass. And since the face is so detailed, it even has a 10x magnifier for close-up inspection. Both versions are available for $585.
