We’ve seen all kinds of digital photo frames, but this one comes in a retro form, looking like a retro TV. Which is a much cooler form than what we typically see. This one comes from Japan’s mag labs.

It packs in a small 3.5 inch screen with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels, with 128 mb of memory and an SD card slot. It won’t play I love Lucy or Leave it to Beaver, but it does support playback of AVI and MP3 files and is powered by AC adapter or the built in Lithium Ion battery.

With the economy still in the toilet, many consumers are holding off on big purchases of electronic devices like TVs. Those who are buying are shopping for lower cost products and looking for value over raw features often.

The numbers for LCD TV shipments for Q2 2009 are in and Vizio has grabbed the top spot again in U.S. LCD TV shipment. The firm is tops in the 21.5 to 24-inch, 26-inch, 32-inch, and 37-inch panel size and leads in year over year growth for 40-inch and over 1080p sets.

Vizio has upset the status quo in the HDTV market in America. The company came in, displaced some of the most established names in HDTVs in America and stole the top sales spot. The reason the company was able to do this was that its products are low cost and perform well.

Vizio has announced a new line of HDTVs that will be coming to market over the next several months. The line includes the XVT HDTV series with up to 240Hz refresh rates and TruLED with Smart Dimming technology.

Panasonic Japan has launched the Viera R series of LCD TV’s which will be available in 7 sizes ranging from 17 inches to 50 inches. With a size range tht wide, there’s something for everybody.

The 37, 32, 20 and 17 inchers will feature a resolution of 1366×768 pixels and come with a 250 Gig hard drive. While the 42, 46 and 50 inchers have a full HD panel and come with a 500GB hard drive. The LCD’s go on sale by July 1 in Japan.

The economy is bad; we have all heard our fill of that. Computer makers, TV makers, and other technology companies are reporting some really bad results in quarterly sales with many firms cutting jobs and missing profit predictions by wide margins. What we haven’t heard much on is the state of the digital camera industry.

I am betting sales of digital cameras are down as well and Pentax has announced a big price cut on one of its flagship DSLR cameras introduced in January 2008 called the K20D. The K20D is a 14.6-megapixel camera with a 2.7-inch LCD offering Live View. Other features of the camera include a dust reduction system and a dust and weather resistant body.

No one can deny that Apple’s iTunes store is seriously popular. The store is the single largest music retailer and has one of the largest collections of music available. The App store is wildly popular and the iTunes movie rental, sale, and TV show market is booming. It seems that Apple can’t do wrong with iTunes.

In fact, Apple has announced that it has now sold over 200 million TV show episodes via iTunes. Apple also says that over 1 million of those shows sold have been in HD resolution. Major networks all contribute programs to the iTunes store including FOX, CBS, ABC, and CBS.

Best Buy is getting all set to unleash its digital converter boxes on the shopping masses as America counts down towards the government mandated DTV transition occurring in 2009. It will have in stores on Feb. 17 the new Insignia Digital-to-Analog Converter for Analog TVs – also known as the NS-DXA1.

The NS-DXA1 is pricing at around $60 at Best Buy, but coupons being made available from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) knock $40 off of that. These boxes change “over-the-air broadcast signals to a readable analog format for TVs that rely solely on over-the-air broadcasts for content as opposed to receiving programming through a cable or satellite subscription.” They measure 8.5- x 6-inches and are eco-friendly.

Amongst the other LCD HDTVs VIZIO was showing off last week at CES, one line which is being called “contemporary styled” is the new VU “Envy” series. It is set to be available sometime this year, though plans are finalized as of yet.

VIZIO said the VU series, which consists of 32-, 37- and 42-inch displays, offers up a side “HD Game Port” for easy connectivity to HDMI enabled devices. VIZIO said these models offer “exceptional video performance with reduced pixel noise and color equalization.”

VIZIO, that upstart HDTV brand you see for sale at Costco-like places, is dropping the LCD hammer big time at CES as it reveals lots of new HDTVs. One new line up of flat panel displays is the “Black Tie” series.

The VIZIO “Black Tie” series includes 42 and 47-inch displays. It is noted by VIZIO for having “120Hz processing with MEMC (Motion Estimation, Motion Compensation), a side access HD game port and full 1080p resolution.”

When organic light-emitting diode (OLED) televisions were first put on display people were immediately grabbed by the stunning resolution and bright color capabilities possible. Place an OLED TV beside a plasma or LED TV and the difference is immediate. That is also true if you place the price tag of the OLED beside the plasma/LED. Because OLED technology is still new the price range for these kinds of TVs are astronomical. The first commercial OLED TV is Sony’s XEL-1 and its 11-inch display will set you back about $1,800 if you can find one (they are only available in Japan right now.)

Today the chairman of Sony said that the company will begin to sell OLED televisions in America starting next year. “When you look at OLED, your impulse is to say ‘wow’. We need that reaction from people at Sony … it’s a statement of confidence, that there is a path to somewhere else,” said Howard Stringer at a Sony vision seminar held in Tokyo.

Consumers are starting to watch more movies and TV shows on their monitors these days. Rather than get up and hang out in the rec room where little Billy might be playing on his PlayStation or Grandpa is watching the news, we’re finding it more convenient to stay seated, a click away from downloading the new episode of “Lost” or sliding a movie disc in our DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-ray drive. Viewsonic is going after that segment of the home market with the launch of its Diamani DUO series of monitors which are now on sale.

Sony Electronics has plans to release seven new home theater systems to retail starting in March, with three of them specifically tailored to complement its Bravia line of TVs.

Technology continues to become more miniaturized day-by-day, with thinner, sleeker gadgets constantly rolling out from the design headquarters of the world’s electronics and computer manufacturers, but it’s dog-gone rare when a company beats its own record and renders its latest merchandise obsolete before it goes on sale.
