Pyramid power: awesome electric car

Posted in Automotive by Conner Flynn on February 19th, 2008

Pyramid power
Looking eerily like something out of old low budget Sci-Fi movies, this pyramid electric car weighs 8,000-pounds and is powered by 80-batteries, with four engines. It can supposedly reach speeds of up to 45mph. I love how the canopy pops open like a Colonial Viper from Battlestar Galactica. It was built by a Father and his two sons. Check out a video after the jump.

The “Dream Car” is solar powered, on four wheels. The vehicle can run for 80 miles on a single charge, taking about four hours to charge the battery. It’s got some extras too. An in-car heating system for one, electric brakes, gel-filled tires and cool neon lights. This was obviously a labor of love as it cost the Zanises $60,000 in supplies, and a ton of hours to build. They’re now looking for financial backers, because they need $40,000 to build a Mark 2 prototype. They would like to get the range up to 500 miles.

12 Star Trek gadgets that became reality
Like many Sci-Fi novels shows and movies, Star Trek showed us futuristic gadgets that at the time were complete Science fiction, but soon came to be a reality. Here’s a list of such technology, in no particular order.

These might be new to you if you have always been far to enamored with the women of Star Trek to notice the tech and gadgets. I don’t blame you, from Yeoman Rand to Tasha Yar, to Beverly Crusher and beyond, there’s some hot babes gallivanting around in the final frontier. Before we get so easily sidetracked, back to the theme. Star Trek gadgets and tech. Some you can own, some are in the works and some are just strange.

The P-Per Cellphone concept is sexy

p-per Cell phone conceptP-Per was awarded for the Red Dot Concept Design. It’s designed by Chocolate Design Agency and is a simple mobile phone concept with features that were supposed to be incompatible: simple, advanced, green and unique.

Modeled after the E-Paper slap bracelet, it’s made of only 4 layers of sustainable materials, the “1 function, 1 part, 1 material” rule makes it easy to disassemble the materials for recycling. Too good to be true? Maybe not. This might be the best phone ever. It has a transparent display for camera mode and a browser that spans the entire surface of the display. Check out a video here and be thoroughly impressed.

The Lars & Ivan Hybrid iPod dock

The Lars & Ivan Hybrid iPod Dock

Whoever Lars and Ivan are, one thing is clear. Well, two things. They know design and they sound like a swedish/Russian adventure movie duo. This PA-40Ti Hybrid iPod Dock is a true work of art, resembling something like a techno hammerhead shark or manta ray from some far off future. It looks as if it may even eat the iPod.(In a cool way) They even left the tubes exposed so you can see them.

They’ve skipped the built-in speakers entirely and instead focus on giving you 40 watts of stereo amplification that can power your speakers.

Sick Brick: The Dodge Tomahawk I

The Dodge Tomahawk I

The Dodge Tomahawk I bike literally looks like some sort of Sci-Fi rocket on wheels. It’s powered by a Dodge Viper V10 engine which produces 500bhp and 525 lb-ft torque. It also claims to be the world’s fasted motorcycle and can accelerate from 0-60mph in just 2.5-seconds, achieving 300mph top speed.

At that speed, colliding with bugs will likely put a hole in your face. The tires apparently had to be custom made by Dunlop. There are two Dunlop P120/60R-20 tires in the front and two P150/50R-20 in back. You can see a video of it after the jump.

Shinoda Plasma Corp debuts 1mm plasma screen

Posted in Concepts, Plasma by Matt on October 4th, 2007

Shinoda Plasma Corp 1mm thick plasma screenShinoda Plasma Corp recently unveiled a prototype plasma screen at CEATEC in Japan that threatens to make existing plasma screen technologies obsolete within 5 to 10 years. Tsutae Shinoda formerly of Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. and inventor of the PDP technology, and with his venture capital company Shinoda Plasma Corp, developed a new type of plasma screen at a near ethereal thickness of 1mm.

A 43 inch prototype screen was taken directly from the small laboratories at Shinoda Plasma Corp to the demonstration. Shinoda explained the new technology as a series of glass plasma tubes that contain RGB fluorescent materials, and demonstrated the flexibility of the new screen. Due to the screen’s flexibility, Shinoda anticipates using the display in places it has previously been difficult to house one suggesting ceiling mounted or even entire tunnel wall displays as examples.

YouTube on Apple TV

Posted in Apple TV, News, YouTube by Chetz on June 1st, 2007

YouTube videos showing on Apple TVThe immense popularity of YouTube and the rapidly eroding audience of network television could only mean that one day someone out there would think of bringing it into our homes and not through our computers. I am of course referring to Apple’s announcement to bring YouTube direct through its Apple TV streaming service, the next greatest thing from the mind of Steve Jobs (barring the release of the iPhone of course.)

Ironically enough Apple will debut the YouTube service in mid-June, right about when the iPhone hits the masses. Apple …
