It wasn’t so long ago that a wireless broadband modem was a large and clunky device that often needed two of your available USB ports to operate. The things drew lots of power and were just plain big. Modems today have shrunk in size and need less power from your notebook. Verizon has announced a new and small wireless broadband modem that will be available soon.

The modem is called the USB760 Micro Modem and it offers a microSD card slot that supports up to 8GB of storage. The software needed to use the modem on Windows and Mac systems is installed on the modem so no disc is needed. The modem is sized more like a USB drive that the typical broadband modem.

If you’re looking for an affordable MP3 player, the Sansa Fuze is a nice slim device that feels high-quality in your hands. It’s available in several color options. The device sounds good too, offers a ton of features for the price, just $80, $100, and $120 for the 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB models. The Sansa Fuze is not new by any means, but it holds it’s own thanks to the great price, easy interface, and a bunch of features. It even has an expansion slot that accepts micro SDHC cards.

Some features include: an FM tuner, Rhapsody DNA integration, photo, video, and a voice recorder. The scroll wheel makes navigation a real joy. I really couldn’t find anything to complain about with this player. The battery life is very good whether you are watching videos or listening to tunes. If you plan on buying a music player this Christmas, the SanDisk Sansa Fuze is the way to go. Drop the small amount of dough required and drop it in a stocking.

Verizon has now officially announced that RIM’s BlackBerry Storm 9530 will be available from Verizon wireless starting November 21. This smartphone is sure to be a hit as it’s BlackBerry’s first touchscreen (SurePress), and iPhone-competing device. It’s also the first device from Verizon set for Global 3G use.

The BlackBerry Storm is going for $199.99 with a two year contract and after a $50 mail-in rebate and will come bundled with an external 8GB microSD card to make sure you can save all that media you’ll be downloading from the high speed connection.

Here’s something you don’t see everyday. A Windows CE 5.0-powered handheld device which a gamepad featured over the traditional keyboard. The Seabright PC430 features a Samsung 2443A 533MHz processor, Maximum 4GB of internal memory, SD memory card slot, USB 2.0 port, Optional Wi-Fi connectivity, GPS navigation, Webcam and a 4.3″ display.

The D-pad is on the left while the A, B, X and Y buttons are on the right. The Seabright PC430 also comes with multimedia playback capability, email support, Pocket Microsoft Word and Excel, PDF reader, Skype and MSN.

Kenwood is introducing its new and very compact audio system with an amplifier, called the Prodino. It’s compatible with SD or SDHC, miniSD, microSD or microSDHC card, up to 32GB and supports MP3 / WMA / AAC audio files with a maximum output power of 10Wx2. The Kenwood Promino should be available this November and will cost around 45,000 Yen or 360€. There’s also an external iPod docking station that’s compatible with the Promino, which is sold separately at 12,600 Yen or 100€. Pretty nice looking and compact setup.

As you might have heard, SanDisk is offering players with a feature that’s a little unusual, a microSD card slot. The slot is a requirement to work with the new music format introduced last month called slotMusic.

The slotMusic format is basically just digital tracks written on a microSD card. SanDisk’s new Sansa player is made especially for the format and is pretty bare bones with no internal memory, no LCD, and no rechargeable battery. It operates on a single AAA battery. It plays slotmusic cards. Period. The device retails for $19.99. You can also get a customized player with an artist skin and a slotMusic card for $34.99. The Agent M Digital Belt Camera is just what it sounds like, a normal looking belt that features a camera integrated into the buckle. Spies with too much girth need not apply; the belt is only 110cm long. The belt camera is capable of recording video in 3GP format at a resolution of 176 x 144 pixels and 15 fps.

In most of the spy movies I have seen, there are always some sort of secret documents that need to be photographed. When 007 needs to take pictures of secret files he doesn’t whip out a massive DSLR, he whips out a tiny spy camera like the Minox Digital SpyCam.

The LG Rhythm is an interesting phone that features a built-in FM transmitter that can send music playing on the phone to a FM radio up to ten feet away. SanDisk announced the largest capacity microSD and M2 format memory card you can get. Both formants are now available in 16GB capacities. The cards require mobile phones and MP3 players that support microSDHC or M2 formats.

The music industry is not happy that consumers have abandoned physical media for their music in droves. Profits on physical media are much higher than profit from digital tracks and the move to digital tracks has greatly impacted the bottom line for music publishers around the world.

To try to recapture some of the lost profitability several of the major music publishers are backing a new physical medium for music called slotMusic. The physical format is nothing more than digital tracks stored on a microSD card with 1GB of storage space.

Many portable electronic devices that are used today store data from office documents to music and video files using SD storage in the form of full-size SD cards and microSD cards. The association that promotes the SD format — the SD Card Association — announced a new standard today for Embedded SD storage.

The new standard would allow manufacturers to embed SD memory inside devices like cameras, phones, and MP3 players. The new specification allows makers to build devices that have internal and external storage using the same specifications.

Chinavision is at it again, offering up a strange dual band smartphone that is part Nokia phone and part iPhone, with a projector thrown in for good measure. Features an interactive touchscreen, WAP, bluetooth, and a 1800mAh battery for extra long talk time between charges, MP3 and MP4 player, 1.3mp Digital Camera, Image Viewer, Video Recorder, and rich media environment messaging options, micro SD card slot complete with a 1GB card.

The projector can be used from a distance of up to 5 feet and will project an image about 32 x 40 inches. It should be “available soon”. I hope they aren’t waiting for the green light from Nokia and Apple.

Nokia released several new Nseries mobiles this week. The Nokia N79 is one of these and it’s coming to Europe this October – no specific American release information was made available.

The Nokia N79, according to its maker, offers up quite a lot of features for the multimedia inclined. This include, in a nutshell, “integrated navigation, music with FM transmitter, high-speed connectivity, superior web browsing, at least 10 pre-loaded N-Gage games and an advanced 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics.” It also combines 3.5G HSDPA and Wi-Fi wireless support.

Verizon recently slipped a new mobile phone into its line up with no fanfare which targets messaging hounds. It is called the Blitz and pricing is around $70 after discounts and such.

The Verizon Wireless Blitz offers up a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and compact design. The screen size is 2.2-inches while the built-in digital camera is 1.3-megapixels and can be accessed with a dedicated camera key. Other features include a hands-free speakerphone, a built-in music player, Bluetooth support and expandable memory up to 4GB via a microSD memory card slot.
