iPhorest: Plant a tree from your iPhoneThis is a pretty neat application. It allows iPhone users to plant a virtual tree from their phone while simultaneously activating the planting of a real tree. Originally showcased at TED, the app is now available to the masses on iTunes.

The real trees are planted by the Conservation Fund, and they will begin with the restoration of a vulnerable wildlife habitat along the Gulf Coast. It’s sponsored by Ecolife Apparel, makers of cotton “green” underwear, and was developed by iPhactory.

Brando Rota-Rota Hub: USB, card reader & thermometerThe latest combination gadget from Brando is the Rota-Rota USB hub that combines three swiveling USB ports, readers for most flash memory formats and…two thermometers? It does have a nice vintage car style thing happening.

Sure, you may have some extra USb ports already. Maybe even a card reader, but I bet you don’t have a thermometer on your desk. C’mon, it must be important to know how hot or cold it is on your desk, to some of you right? For $15 you can have your answer.

Posted in ASUS by Conner Flynn on March 22nd, 2009

ASUS Fold/Unfold laptop will be releasedAsus’s Fold/Unfold concept that they showed off at CES is actually going to be released, according to Asus CEO Jerry Shen. The notebook will cost somewhere between $1,000 and $1,500. The Fold/Unfold (Lets hope it gets a better name) should arrive around September or October 2009.

The design maximizes space for the keyboard and trackpad by sliding the keyboard forward over the trackpad when the laptop’s closed, and sliding back to reveal it when open. It’s an interesting development given the size limitations of netbooks while wanting to maximize keyboard space.

Super Mario Bros Matryoshka dolls

Posted in Nintendo by Conner Flynn on March 20th, 2009

Super Mario Bros Matryoshka dollsEver wonder what Mario would look like if he had been created by an old world Russian doll maker? Cmsturmhous has posted this handmade set of Matryoshka dolls showing a whole bunch of characters from the games. From Mario and Luigi, the princess, Bowser, to Toad.

They all look like they need to go on a diet, especially Mario who is the largest. No way this version can jump as high as a coin box or smash a Goomba. Pretty cool. Now I want to play a fat Mario game, where the Mushroom kingdom is over-run by twinkies and my job is to get Mario in shape as I try to rescue the fat Princess, who is in Bowser’s dungeon eating a gallon of ice cream and a turkey leg.

TomTom offers new map subscription service

Posted in TomTom by Shane McGlaun on March 20th, 2009

tomtom-logo-sbI’ve mentioned before that I like GPS devices. However, when the maps start to get out of date or there is heavy road construction in your area that was recently completed it can leave the maps inside the system lacking. There is nothing worse than having your GPS tell you to take a route that has roads that no longer exist.

TomTom has announced a new service called the Map Update Service that allows customers to get quarterly map updates for a year. The price of the service is $39.80 for four updates per year or $9.95 per individual update.

Wolverine cable holderNormally Wolverine’s claws will shred anything that they come into contact with. Luckily the adamantium skeleton in this Wolverine Mighty Muggs figure isn’t so strong.

This was once a simple Wolverine figure, but some outside of the box thinking has turned Logan into an effective iPod cable manager. Proof that simple toys can sometimes help keep your gadgets tidy on your desk. It’s only $15 and probably has some other uses as well.
