Falcon Northwest FragBox is small and powerful

Posted in PCs by Conner Flynn on April 6th, 2011

Falcon Northwest’s custom FragBox gaming computer lives up to it’s name, with the latest modern processor, two graphics cards and 24 gigs of RAM, all in a case roughly the size of a shoebox. A shoebox that holds shoes that will kick you like a champion kickboxer. It’s nice and portable too since it has a handle.

The Fragbox is 15 inches long, eight inches tall and weighs just 25 pounds. For a machine that includes specs like 24 gigs of RAM, dual Radeon 6970s, an Intel Core i7 Extreme processor, and a 256 gig SSD, it would cost you about $5,600. Lower spec systems start at $1,700.

Motorola XOOM and ATRIX 4G sales are ‘disappointing’

Posted in Motorola by Conner Flynn on April 5th, 2011

We didn’t need an analyst to clue us in on poor sales of Motorola’s key products, but that is exactly what we have today. Pacific Crest analyst James Faucette revised his full-year 2011 revenue estimates down from $13.7 billion to $12.25 billion. He also revised his 2012 revenue estimates down from $15.34 billion to $13.62 billion. Ouch!

He says that overall sell-through trends for the Xoom and Atrix have been disappointing and he believes the Atrix’s lower-than-forecast sales are a result of the $49 iPhone 3GS and the HTC Inspire, which makes perfect sense. What is Motorola going to do now? Hopefully they price their products better to start.

They also threw in a clock and a thermometer. I guess they think that you are going to spend a lot of time on this scale. The scale takes your body weight in 100g steps (150kg maximum) and is available in white and pink colors. Just $27.

Digital Music to overtake CDs in U.S. sales by next year

Posted in music by Conner Flynn on March 31st, 2011

Things have been bad for the music industry ever since itunes and it is getting worse. Physical album sales are expected to drop 40%. The RIAA in the US and the worldwide IFPI have often said that these drops in sales are only due to piracy, but we all know that that is just bogus. Much of the drop is due to the decline of the album format.

Much of the industry’s sales has always been due to stronger whole albums in some cases and of course the necessity to buy a whole album at $15 to $20, even when you only want one or two songs. Strong quality albums are what sells. Quality. Are there any modern Beatles? Stones? Bah. I’m going back to bed.

Posted in USB by Conner Flynn on March 31st, 2011

It may not look like much, but this is the first USB 3.0 video card. And don’t worry, you don’t have to sacrifice image quality and frame rates with this device because USB 3.0 has enough bandwidth for even multiple HD monitors. Awesome. This USB 3.0 video card from Sunix has a GPU either from in-house or SMSC.

The adapter draws just 400mA current, helping with backwards compatibility. That means that the dongle will work when plugged into a USB 2.0 port. The max resolution the adapter can handle is 2048×1152 and the HDMI 1.2 connection.

According to the official O2 blog, things may not be running as smoothly as we thought for the Xperia Play. For one, it will miss it’s April 1st launch. This is due to having to work out some bugs and make it all stable so that we get a good phone, not a junk one.

Fujifilm XP30 now available

Posted in Fujifilm by Conner Flynn on March 24th, 2011

We first saw the Fujifilm XP30 back at CES last January. It’s another tough camera that features dust, water, freeze and shock protection. You know, in case you want to jump from a dusty cave into a pool of water, which turns out to be freezing and accidentally bang it on a rock on the way down.

It’s freeze proof to minus 10 degrees, water proof to 5 metres and shock proof so it can withstand a drop of 1.5 metres. Built-in GPS will be able to log your location, which can be displayed either as longitude and latitude coordinates, or by place name. As a bonus, the XP30 also has an embedded list with around half a million places of interest across the globe. So you will have plenty of places to visit.

Xperia Play games could cost $15 or more

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on March 24th, 2011

The game lineup for Sony’s Xperia Play, also known as the PlayStation Phone, will range in price from $1.50 to upwards of $16, according to an interview with Sony Ericsson UK head of marketing David Hilton. Gamers are expecting 50 titles at launch, which include some PSOne classics and also some games that have been “repurposed for Xperia Play” from other platforms.

What do you think of these prices? They are in line with mobile gaming prices in general and the Xperia Play should allow for far more complex games if you believe David Hilton. Do you plan on buying many of these?
