Nintendo sells 3.61 million 3DS handhelds

Posted in Nintendo 3DS by Reuben Drake on April 25th, 2011

There’s good news and there’s bad news for the big N. Nintendo’s net sales of $12.4 billion for the period ending on March 31st 2011 was 29 percent less than during the previous year. Also its $825 million of net profit was 66 percent lower than it earned last year. Things are not so great in the Mushroom Kingdom.

However, there is some good news. The 3DS has reached 3.61 million sales worldwide, but at the same time the Wii is down to 15 million global sales, a 25 percent drop from its 2009 total of 20 million. Looks like the timing is perfect for the new console.

BlackBerry PlayBook gets a tear down

Posted in BlackBerry,Playbook by Conner Flynn on April 19th, 2011

Do you know what’s in your PlayBook? Well, we already knew most of the specs, but some things we were unsure of. Like whether the 7-inch tablet had a gyroscope. Now we know that it does, thanks to the guys over at iFixit who have done their usual great job of prying a gadget open and digging inside. What would we do without them?

They gave it a repairability score of 7 out of 10, which is pretty good. Replacing the front glass is a bit hard, but that is true of most devices. Hit the link below for the full details and lots of awesome pics. And don’t try it at home unless you are very confident in your skills.

Dr. Who Coffin for the Timelord who has run out of time

Posted in Sci-Fi by Conner Flynn on April 19th, 2011

Even Timelords die eventually after 12 regenerations, and when they do they need an appropriate send off. A coffin fit for an explorer of time and space. One like this, displaying his Tardis and some of his deadly enemies.

This Doctor Who coffin comes from the guys over at Creative Coffins. They will take any theme you want and create a coffin that will make your funeral a bit more lively. Seems a shame to bury such a beautiful bit of art, but if it’s the only thing you are taking with you, why not.

Nintendo Wii at Toys R Us and Best Buy for $169.99

Posted in Nintendo by Conner Flynn on April 17th, 2011

The glory days of Nintendo’s console are well behind it and so on May 15th it is due to get a lower price to move more units. But why wait? Both Best Buy and Toys ‘R’ Us already have the Wii console on sale for $170 today.

It doesn’t appear to be a permanent price cut as it states that it is a “Limited Time Offer!” but we are pretty sure other retailers follow this trend very soon. After all, every Wii sold at $170 puts some money in the big N’s pockets so it can produce something capable of doing better than 480p.

Nintendo 3DS hits 400,000 US sales in opening week

Posted in Nintendo 3DS by Conner Flynn on April 15th, 2011

Nintendo had mentioned that the 3DS set a day-one US sales record, and now we have some actual numbers. Looks like 400,000 3DS units were sold in the month of March. The DS’ overall March sales totaled 460,000. Remember the 3DS launched at the end of march, so this is one weeks sales.

Obviously it won’t keep up the pace forever, but with the Legend of Zelda game, the launch of the E-Shop, and Netflix integration all coming this summer, the future looks bright for the 3DS.

Sony ships 50 million PS3s and 8 million Move controllers worldwide

Posted in PS3 by Reuben Drake on April 15th, 2011

Sony has reason to celebrate when it comes to sales of its gaming hardware. The PS3 has reached over 50 million units shipped worldwide and the PS Move controller has shipped over eight million units. That’s a lot of gear no matter how you look at it.

These are categorized as “shipped” because Sony reports sales to retailers, not end users like you and me. Anyhow, those are still huge numbers. The PS3 is on fire.

LG Optimus 2X to get Gingerbread in mid-2011

Posted in LG by Conner Flynn on April 14th, 2011

LG has said that Gingerbread will be forthcoming for its dual-core Optimus 2X Android handset, but aside from that they have been pretty quiet on the issue. Now we have word from LG’s Danish support site that the P990 (aka the 2X) will be updated to Android 2.3 “in June-July 2011.”

That’s later than we were all hoping for, but still, better late than never. Though it should be noted that LG has a history of inconsistency when it comes to software roadmaps, so we will see if they hold to that timeframe.
