China is getting a Kinect clone

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on August 12th, 2010

Technically video game consoles are banned in China, but of course you can still get one on the gray market. That means that most people won’t be able to get an Xbox 360 or the upcoming Kinect system. So a company from China is rolling out the eBox gaming console which is controller-free.

It looks like its a clone of the Kinect since it also uses a webcam-style device. We don’t know much more about it, but we do know it will come bundled with 30 or so games.

Sharp’s Brain PW-AC10 e-dictionary looks like a phone

Posted in Sharp by Conner Flynn on July 27th, 2010

Here’s a Sharp e-dictionary that looks like a phone. It’s called the Brain PW-AC10 and aims to fool people with it’s BlackBerry-esque candybar looks. The device claims to be the industry’s lightest e-dictionary while carrying two AAA batteries that keep it going for a full 110 hours.

That 2.4-inch LCD QVGA screen will take some getting used to, but the device packs the usual English-Japanese translator, a flashcard feature, and a seven-language traveling phrase book with color images.

Posted in Headphones by Conner Flynn on July 26th, 2010

Audio-Technica has introduced not one but two new headphones for the mass market today. They sport an interesting design, almost retro and apparently come in several colors.

The ATH-XS7 and ATH-XS5 both come equipped with a “Wide Back Band” headband, a 110dB/mW output and a 47-Ohm impedance. Sadly we have no info on pricing or availability yet, but hopefully we will know more soon. Then we can buy them and hopefully it will be music to our ears.

Onkyo HDMI-connected 10.1-inch picture frame

Posted in Digital Photo Frames by Conner Flynn on July 22nd, 2010

Onkyo’s LPF10M01 is basically a netbook screen without the netbook. 10.1 inches of LED-backlit LCD with a resolution of 1,024 x 600 and 250 nits of brightness and a 500 to 1 contrast ratio. The interesting part is the HDMI input, which is something you don’t normally see in picture frames.

There’s also a USB port, SDHC and Memory Stick card reader, and 512MB of integrated memory. It could be nice as a secondary display with it’s 140 degree horizontal viewing angle and 110 on the vertical axis.

Sensgard ZEM headphones

Posted in Headphones by Conner Flynn on July 14th, 2010

Sensgard has rolled out its ZEM headphones. They come with a simple amplifier that will reproduce purer sound and cancel background noise using a proprietary technique from acoustic researcher Dr. Jozef Zwislocki. The noise cancellation doesn’t require any power, instead using a physics-based sound filter which reduces noise in low and high frequency ranges.

Since there is no electronic gear involved with that, the cost and weight of the headphones are reduced. A few small, electro-magnetic receivers work as electro-mechanical amplifiers, delivering a frequency response between 20Hz and 20,000Hz and a sensitivity of 110.5dB at 1,500Hz.

MSI WindPad 110 with Tegra 2 and Android hides in the shadows

Posted in MSI by Shane McGlaun on May 31st, 2010

I just mentioned that the WindPad 100 from MSI was shown off at Computex today. The 100 was unveiled at the MSI press conference, but its Tegra 2 and Android sibling was not so lucky.

The WindPad 110 was left slinking around the MSI booth without much fanfare. The 110 is the more interesting of the two tablets to me. It has the same 10-inch capacitive touchscreen as the 100 but uses the Tegra 2 platform from NVIDIA.

Apple selling more iPads than Macs

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on May 20th, 2010

There’s no question that Apple is selling tons of iPads. To the tune of more than 200,000 iPads per week. According to RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky, sales of the device have outpaced those of the Mac in the United States and are now closing in on those of the iPhone 3GS.

200,000 iPads compared to 110,000 Macs. The iPhone does 246,000 per week. These are just analyst estimates, but they are probably in the ballpark. If accurate, this is a heck of a milestone for Apple.
