Posted in Mitsubishi by Conner Flynn on April 6th, 2010

If you’re looking for something a tad more Earth friendly in a monitor, this may be for you. Mitsubishi Electric has released a new addition to its Diamondcrysta WIDE family of monitors, the RDT232WLM. This new model features a 23-inch TN panel as well as an ECO Mode that will lower power consumption by as much as 35%.

That’s pretty decent my eco-loving friends. It’s available in black or white and has a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, a 5ms response time, a brightness of 250 cd/m2, a 1000:1 contrast ratio (5000:1 DCR), D-Sub, DVI and HDMI outputs, and a couple of 1W speakers.

Acer Japan to launch GD245HQbid 3D Monitor

Posted in 3D by Conner Flynn on March 25th, 2010

You don’t need a fancy pair of glasses to spot all the 3D TVs and monitors zooming in and out of our periphery. Now it’s Acer’s turn. Acer will be launching its new Gaming GD245HQbid 3D monitor for those in Japan tomorrow.

The monitor will cost you 45,000Yen (or $486), which we suppose is a decent price if we had any 3D games to play on it. This 23.6-incher features a 1000:1 contrast ratio and a 2ms response time. Looks like 3D glasses are sold separately, so…so much for that decent price.

WSJ on iPad for $17.99 a month

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on March 25th, 2010

The Wall Street Journal is running a piece on itself, quoting “a person familiar with the matter” who says that The WSJ plans to charge subscribers $17.99 per month for iPad subscriptions. That’s not a bad price, since the print version of the WSJ costs about $29 per month. But is it in line with what people want to pay for the content digitally?

Magazines are apparently ready to offer weekly or monthly editions from the start, not annual subscriptions. According to sources, the April issue of Esquire magazine will arrive in downloadable format without advertisements for only $2.99, which is $2 less than the newsstand price, and will include five music videos to show off the device’s multimedia. Then there’s a full iPad issue of Men’s Health that matches the $4.99 regular price.

Posted in Sci-Fi by Conner Flynn on March 14th, 2010

Sure, it looks like it took on a fleet of Klingon Battle Cruisers all by itself and suffered some severe dents, but what you are looking at is the smallest Enterprise ever. It measures just 8.8 micrometers in length (1 micrometer = 1000th of a millimeter) and was created by Takayuki Hoshino and Shinji Matsui using a 30 kV Ga+ focused-ion-beam CVD.

It was created for the The 47th International Conference on Electron, Ion and Photon Beam Technology and Nanofabrication Bizarre/Beautiful Micrograph Contest back in 2003.

Apple Targets Nexus One, Maybe Google in Lawsuit

Posted in Legal, patents by Darrin Olson on March 3rd, 2010

Apple files lawsuit with HTC over Android based mobile devices. On Tuesday Apple filed complaints with both the U.S. International Trade Commission and a federal court in Delaware seeking to stop the import, sales and use of some phones made by Taiwanese manufacturer HTC. The complaint suggests that HTC has infringed on patents owned by Apple with a number of their mobile handsets, all which rely on Google’s Android operating system.

The mobile devices in question include the Pro Touch, TouchPro 2, Touch Diamond, myTouch 3G, Tilt II, Pure, Imago, T-Mobile G1, Hero, Droid Eris, HD2 and of course Google’s own Nexus One which was also made by HTC. As many as 10 of the 20 accused violations involve the Nexus One, which brings up some speculation. Since Apple is targeting Android-based mobile devices with HTC, they could be gearing up to go after Google directly with the Android operating system. Not all of the patent infringement complaints by Apple involve the Android OS, however.
