NEC announces new 22-inch LCD for color-critical use

Posted in NEC by Shane McGlaun on October 24th, 2008

NEC P221W LCDIn some environments it is imperative that the color you see on screen is the color you get when a finished design in printed. Graphic artists for instance can’t have a deep red coming out looking like pink when a brochure is printed. Photographers also need to be sure that the color they see on the screen is what the printed pictures look like.

NEC has announced a new display made especially for this type of environment. The P221W has an optional NEC SpectraView calibration kit that is available. The LCD covers 96% of the AdobeRGB color gamut and has internal programmable 10-bit lookup tables. I’m not sure what a lookup table is, but it sounds cool.

The DSi, is the third iteration of the handheld game console and the company has managed to pack even more features into the device while even making it slightly smaller.

The new DSi looks very similar to the DS Lite with the same clamshell design and dual screens but the chasis is about 2.6mm thinner. iRex 1000 Series eReaderI like to read and I could see myself buying the Amazon Kindle reader with its slick built-in Internet connectivity. It would be cool to be able to download new books without having to run to the bookstore to pick one out. Right now though, I think the Kindle is still overpriced.

iRex has announced three new eReaders called the 1000S, 1000SW, and wireless connectivity 1000SW. All of the readers have the same 10.2-inch screen that looks like paper. The readers also include a Wacom Penabled touch screen.

Intel makes its 80GB SSDs official

Posted in Intel,Storage by Shane McGlaun on September 9th, 2008

Intel SSDsThe SSD offers some nice benefits to the notebook users like increased battery life, faster boot times, and quieter operation. The catch is that at this time SSDs are significantly more expensive than comparable hard drives and the storage capacity of the typical SSD is low.

Intel has jumped into the SSD market with the introduction of a pair of SSDs aimed at consumers. The new SSDs include the X18-M and the X25-M. The X18-M is a 1.8-inch drive and the X25-M is a more traditional 2.5-inch size drive. Intel says that the improved performance of the SSD helps reduce bottlenecks between its CPUs and the storage system. This is the SSD used in the HP system claiming 24-hours of runtime.

Sony announces two new home theater projectors

Posted in Sony by Shane McGlaun on September 4th, 2008

Sony VPL-HW10 ProjectorIf I had the space in my house, I would definitely prefer to have a projector set up rather than a normal HDTV. With a projector, you can get a giant size HD image that you can’t get with a LCD or plasma TV, short of spending $100k.

Sony has introduced a pair of new home theater projectors at CEDIA in Denver. One of the projectors is high-end and intended for custom installations. The custom install projector is called the VPL-VW70. It has a 60,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and 800 ANSI lumens of brightness. It can also use an optional Anamorphic lens to provide large screen sizes with an aspect ratio of 2.35:1. The VW70 will retail for $8,000.

Beijing Olympics Fuwa mascot mice

Posted in Mouse by Conner Flynn on August 28th, 2008

Beijing Olympics Fuwa mascot miceThe olympics are over, but the gadgets continue thanks to Lenovo. How about a set of five wired USB mice named after each of the Fuwa mascots: Beibei, Jingjing, Huanhuan, Yingying and NiNi? If you can believe it, the mouse asymmetrical design took six months to complete, after two hundred or so modifications. We’re taking that one with many grains of salt.

At 1000 dpi optical, the mice are elevated for palm support during prolonged use. The Fuwas are UV painted so they won’t get all scratched up when you make them fight each other on your desk. Each mascot mouse retails for about $20, but it looks like they’re available in China and Hong Kong only.

R2-D2 fridge keeps stuff cold as Hoth

R2-D2 fridge keeps stuff cold as HothThis R2-D2 compact fridge is hot as tatooine outside and cold as the ice planet Hoth inside, so it will impress your friends and keep your food fresh. It was made back in 2002 as a promotional item for an Attack of the Clones contest held at 7-11 Stores in Japan. Apparently only 1000 of these rare refrigerators were ever made, making it a hot and cool collectible at the same time.

Luckily for you, you can buy one from Toyeast for $1070. Of course, that is probably your grocery money so you won’t have anything to put in it. Empty or not, you’ll have your own astromech droid. Now you’ll just need an X-Wing to put him in.

New Sony Cyber-shot cameras get thin and smart

Posted in Cameras by Shane McGlaun on August 7th, 2008

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T700Digital cameras have come a long way in recent years towards getting easier to use and making better images. The cameras are also getting much smaller making it easier for people to keep a camera on them at all times so they can snap pictures of friends and family doing stupid stuff to use as leverage in the coming years.

Case in point is the new Sony Cyber-shot cameras announced this week. The Sony DSC-T77 10-megapixel camera is the thinnest camera in Sony’s line at only 5/8 of an inch thick. The rear LCD on the T77 is 3-inches wide and is touch sensitive. Other features of the camera include intelligent scene recognition, Smile shutter, and face detection with settings for adult and child priority. The camera also has an ISO sensitivity of up to 3200.

‘Rithm’ speaker is a beautiful Star Trek symbol

‘Rithm’ speaker is a beautiful Star Trek symbol
Danish company Davone’s Rithm speaker combines quality sound with art. I wonder if they knew they were creating an artful Star Trek symbol as well. It says, “I’m in Starfleet and I own cool stuff. Deal.” The speaker has a 8-inch coaxial driver with a 1-inch dome tweeter in the center of the woofer. Davone will tell ya that the layers of glue and wood that make the frame actually give it extra damping and reduce vibrations for superior sound quality. Get one in walnut, oak, or black stained oak. It’s perfect decor for your Starship’s ready-room.
