Brother Japan to release a $1,100 e-book reader

Posted in ebooks by Conner Flynn on February 12th, 2010

The SV-70 will probably not be coming to the States and that’s just fine with us. It ditches the Bluetooth module of its predecessor and the 2GB microSD card that was included for a lower price of $1,100 MSRP.

The rest of the specs are the same: a 9.7-inch, 1200 x 825 display, 100MB of internal memory, microSD expansion slot, and 83 hours worth of battery life. That’s a lot of document reading time. We wonder how business guys will actually take this device.

Both will have your choice of Athlon II and dual-core Turion II processors, with ATI Radeon HD Mobility graphics. Both will be available in March for the budget price of $449. Lenovo is hoping that you buy these instead of a netbook due to screen size.

HTC Trophy with QWERTY, Touchscreen and Windows Mobile

Looks like HTC has a winner in the Trophy. If it’s real, which we doubt. Specs-wise and hardware-wise, it’s got it where it counts. It sports a sleek and slim design just 11 mm thick, a 3-inch VGA capacitive touchscreen, full QWERTY keyboard, and a 5 megapixel autofocus camera.

It packs the Qualcomm MSM7227 600MHz chipset, 512 MB of flash memory, and 256 MB RAM. Some other features include GPS/AGPS capability, WiFi b/g, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, dualband (900/2100) WCDMA/HSPA , quadband GSM/EDGE, and special features like Motion G-sensor and Business Card Scanner.

8.9-inch ExoPC Slate tablet

Posted in Tablet PC by Conner Flynn on January 31st, 2010

This 8.9-inch multitouch tablet looks a lot like another recently announced 9.7 multitouch tablet. But this one packs some different stuff inside, including full browser support with flash thanks to Windows 7 on an Atom N270 at 1.6GHz, with 2GB of DDR2 memory and a 32GB SSD with SD expansion.

It may not give you the speedy performance of the iPad, but it will be a lot more functional. Battery life is four hours and is user-replaceable. The $599 price is the same as the 32GB iPad. Expect it to be available in March. It still has a large bezel, but what are you gonna do?

Samsung debuts 3000:1 contrast ratio LCDs

Posted in Samsung by Shane McGlaun on January 20th, 2010

I confess that I am not a big fan of the dynamic contrast ratios that many manufacturers quote for LCD TVs and monitors today. The whole thing is merely an attempt to get consumers to think a billion to one contrast ratio is better than the next guys 1000:1 ratio.

Samsung has unveiled a new set of LCDs including the F2370H and the F2380MX that both claim the world’s highest contrast ratio with a firm 3000:1. Samsung does say that the screens have a 150,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio for those of you who prefer the big numbers.

Kids CyberNet Station is an expensive AIO computer

Posted in Computers by Shane McGlaun on January 19th, 2010

I have on more than one occasion thought about going to an AIO computer that is quieter than my normal desktop. My machine has so much gear crammed inside that the drone of the fans can drive you crazy some days. If you are looking for an AIO to give to a kid as their first computer, a company called Kid Computers has one.

The catch is that the machine sells for nearly $2,000, which many parents will consider a significant stretch for a first computer. A $500 to $1000 AIO from another manufacturer with netbook innards would be more appropriate in most cases.

Nanobrick’s Miyoul Media Frames store photos on individual OLED screens

Posted in Digital Photo Frames by Conner Flynn on January 13th, 2010

Forget regular old Digital Picture Frames. Nanobrick has created 11 media frame models that you can customize with your photos. Each of them has several OLED screens that measure either 3.3-inches or 4.1-inches.

Problem is that each model costs around $100,000. It would be cheaper to make one yourself. If you can afford one maybe you can display pictures of money burning and people getting hit in the nads with baseballs, because that’s how you will feel after your purchase.
