Posted in Printers by Conner Flynn on October 19th, 2008

Objet Alaris 30 Desktop 3D PrinterHave you ever wished you had a real-life replicator that can actually create 3D objects from nothing? Like the Star Trek Replicator? It’s here. Actually 3D printers have been around for awhile, but are just now getting small enough to fit onto your desk. The Objet Alaris 30 is a compact desktop 3D printer that uses a peripheral with PolyJet Photopolymer Jetting. This helps it produce 600 x 600 dpi objects up to 11.5 x 7.7 x 5.9 inches in size.

That’s an improvement over the 5-inch cube that they did last year. The printer can manufacture small moving elements as thin as 0.0011 inches. According to Objet, the Alaris 30 Desktop 3D Printer will give you 36 hours of unattended printing from your 3D CAD files. No word on pricing or availability.

Focus Design’s self-balancing unicycle

Focus Design’s self-balancing unicycleThe latest in personal transport promises to make you look ridiculous on your way to work. Focus Design’s SBU electric self-balancing unicycle will also help those circus Clowns who never mastered balance, thereby making it easier to graduate from Clown College.

The SBU can be steered by leaning left to right, like a regular unicycle, and it uses Segway-type gyroscopes to power you forward and backward. It moves at 8MPH and lasts about 1.5hrs on a single charge. Yes, it’s coming to market, for real. Focus is looking to do a limited run of ten SBUs next month, assuring those who buy it that they don’t look dorky at all for $1,500 a pop. Check out a video below.

Beware the pink tank: It shoots hot dogs

Posted in Automotive by Conner Flynn on October 6th, 2008

pink tank: It shoots hot dogs30 year-old Philadelphia guy Vin Marshall and nine of his friends built this 2,000-pound replica tank from junkyard parts, complete with a functioning pneumatic cannon that fires hot dogs. Believe it or not it moves using pedal power. It has enough room to fit hardware for six peddlers and yield about 1.5 horsepower.

Problem is that’s not enough to move tank treads, so they decided to use wheels instead. Then they gave it bicycle-like gearing to get more power from less exertion. When parade day arrived it all worked out and they were able to move along at 15 mph with a full load. It cost about $3000 to build. Why pink? I have no idea. Maybe because it fits the whole hot dog theme. I didn’t see any specs on how many dogs per minute it fires, but just the fact that it does it is impressive. Check out a video below.

Amazon’s Kindle 2 surfaces

Posted in kindle by Conner Flynn on October 5th, 2008

Amazon’s Kindle 2 surfacesBoy Genius has some pics of what is in all likelihood the Kindle 2. You’ll notice that this follow-up to the original reader is more rounded, more iPod-esqe, but still in boring white with the same screen. The LCD status bar is nowhere to be seen and a joystick replaces the clickwheel, and so you can avoid accidental page turns, it sports smaller buttons. The SD slot is gone too, since there’s 1.5 gigs on-board, along with grills on back that may mean stereo speakers.

Basically, it’s a lot less ugly. Current Kindle owners can probably skip the upgrade unless the ugliness of the original is really bugging you. No word on the availability yet. Hit the link for more pictures.

LumiTop Bras highlight what you’re already looking at
Want your girlfriend’s boobs to look like a luminous butterfly from a drug commercial? So does French design house Lumigram. Meet the Lumitop bra. It will illicit responses like “I’m up here!” as it seems to hypnotize you not with what lay behind it for once, but with it’s bright luminescent shine. Because there’s nothing sexier then a futuristic, luminescent babe right?

The bras are part of Lumigram’s new collection – light for style. It’s powered by 1.5V replaceable batteries, which will cause boob-shine for more than 12 hours and sports a small on/off switch. Current pricing is from 100 to 170 Euros. If I may, in my current state of euphoria, paraphrase from a Neil Diamond song. “Turn on your bra-light. Let it shine wherever you go. Let it make a happy glow, for all the world to see…”

The Lego Brick PC

Posted in Cases by Conner Flynn on August 10th, 2008

The Lego Brick PCLegos aren’t just for play you know. They can also be used to construct and even fix important real life things that you can use. Like this Lego PC case for example. Looking like some shiny black monolith, it’s made entirely out of black Lego bricks. Look how nice and shiny that is. He didn’t just randomly put Lego bricks together either. He used MLCAD to specifically design the PC before building.

The PC is a Mini-ITX form factor that allows for a low power PC inside, which runs a 1.5GHz VIA C7 processor and has a 250GB Seagate hard drive. It’s even got dual gigabite ports on the JetWay motherboard. Very nice. Check out the below video to see how he did it. Yet another real life situation solved by Legos. Have you played with Legos today?
