SnapStream DVR records 50 channels at once

Posted in DVR by Conner Flynn on April 8th, 2010

SnapStream has a new DVR that can record up to 50 channels simultaneously onto 100TB worth of storage capacity. SnapStream is also writing the software that controls it. Think about that. This is equal to 326 Tivo Premier boxes all in a closet-sized box.

There’s just a single coax cable as the input in back. SnapStream has tools to search the content. Their system is already used by TV production teams that need to find recent footage quickly. Pretty amazing and not for the likes of you and I.

Dish unveils awesome VIP 922 DVR with Slingbox built-in

Posted in Home Theater by Shane McGlaun on April 8th, 2010

I love my DVR, but the worst thing about it is that it only has a 20GB HDD and I can’t do anything with the programs I record other than watch them on the TV. Dish Network has announced a new DVR that frees your content and hold lots more of it.

The new DVR is called the VIP 922 and the thing has Slingbox tech built-in. Slingbox tech inside the DVR is a first and should let you shoot that content to your PC for viewing and possibly to other devices as well.

TSA says Netbooks, e-readers and iPads can be kept inside bags during airport checks

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on April 8th, 2010

The American Transportation Security Administration has informed travelers via it’s blog, that when traveling to, from, and within the USA, portable computers smaller than “the standard sized laptop” don’t have to be removed from their bags.

So what is the standard sized laptop? Well, they don’t really say. However, Kindles, iPads, Sony Readers, Nooks, and “Net Books” are named as being exempt from the requirement to unbag your computer for the X-ray scanners. Of course, there’s the disclaimer that staff might want to take a second look at odd-looking devices, but for the most part you can leave that e-reader in your bag.

Posted in News by Darrin Olson on April 8th, 2010

TSA employee looks inside laptop bag.Blogger Bob with the TSA announced recently that electronic items smaller than the standard size laptop should not need to be removed from their bag or case when going through airport security. They didn’t say specifically what that standard size is, but did name a few items specifically that would fall below the size threshold have having to be removed, namely iPads, Kindles, Neos, Nooks, Sony Readers and Netbooks.

This certainly doesn’t mean that you don’t need to take things out of your bag …

Blendtec Takes Down the iPad

Posted in iPad by Darrin Olson on April 5th, 2010

iPad destroyed in a blenderJust in case there were any doubts, the folks from Blendtec blenders did prove this week that the new Apple iPad does in fact blend. It wouldn’t actually fit inside the blender in its original shape and took a slight pre-modification, but in the end it did succumb to the powers of the blender to result in a lot of “iPad dust”. Check out the video after the jump:

Dell Adamo gets cloned

Posted in Notebooks by Conner Flynn on April 5th, 2010

The Dell Adamo will normally cost you quite a bit, but if you are more budget minded, you can still get similar style without the huge price tag. Just get a clone. As usual the folks from Shenzhen have you covered.

Looks like this one also has an aluminum chassis, but the color isn’t doing anything for us. They didn’t clone the specs though. Instead you’ll find netbook specs like an Intel Atom N450 1.66GHz processor, an 11.6″ display, 1GB RAM and a 160GB hard drive.

Nintendo 3DS concept turns up

Posted in Concepts by Shane McGlaun on April 5th, 2010

Other than playing games on my iPhone, I have never had a real desire for mobile gaming. My son has a PSP (which he never plays) and a Nintendo DS, which gets player a lot. I just stick with the iPhone.

The announcement of the coming Nintendo 3DS has me intrigued though. I especially like that you don’t need glasses for 3D games. We aren’t sure what screens the device will use at this point or even what it will look like, but I hope it looks like this concept.

Posted in Home by Conner Flynn on April 4th, 2010

We’ve never seen a toothbrush like this one before. These Hammacher Schlemmer super toothbrushes promise to clean all of your teeth in just 40 seconds. This bizarre looking device looks like it was designed to brush Predator teeth. It has four heads that will clean the front, back, and chewing surface of your top and bottom teeth all at the same time.

The brushes do their thing 810 times per minute and are mounted on self-adjusting pivoting heads. Sounds like a powerful cleaning. It uses two AA batteries which will give you 60 uses after a full 12-hour charge. It comes with four soft bristle brush heads and a tongue cleaner.

Posted in Computers by Shane McGlaun on April 1st, 2010

Both Dell and HP were late getting into the netbook market. The two companies ultimately offered netbooks, but by that time, they were not the most popular machines in the segment. Major computer makers were also lamenting the fact that price of the netbooks drove profits down.

DigiTimes cites sources that claim both Dell and HP are set to reduce their investment s in the 10-inch netbook market. These sources claim that HP may even vacate the market altogether.

Posted in Acer by Conner Flynn on April 1st, 2010

Don’t get too excited. It’s not official yet, but it is coming and it will be a follow-up to the Aspire One D250, and will dualboot both Android and Windows. How do we know? Acer’s mobile product manager Martino Mombrini let it slip yesterday to Electricpig.

He said that the chassis of the D260 dualbook will be redesigned so it won’t look like the D250. He also took the opportunity to talk about how they want to launch a Chrome OS netbook, with a Q3 release date “likely.” What do you think? Interested?

WD intros 2.5-inch 750GB Scorpio Blue HDD

Posted in Western Digital by Conner Flynn on March 30th, 2010

Western Digital shipped the industry’s first 2.5-inch 1TB hard drive last summer, but sadly it couldn’t be used as a drop-in solution for upgrading your laptop drive. This is because it relies on a 12.5mm height form factor, while the majority of laptops only support 9.5mm height drives.

Well, now they’ve outed the 750GB Scorpio Blue, a 2.5-inch drive that uses the standard height form factor. The unit includes Advanced Format and WhisperDrive for just $149.

Folding Laptop concept with full-sized keyboard

Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on March 30th, 2010

Here’s an interesting concept for you if you really love a full-sized keyboard when using a netbook. It comes from designer Yang Yongchang and offers a sturdy yet small design.

It could do with a large touchpad, but it’s still a very cool idea. Hopefully it won’t turn into an Autobot or Decepticon and kick your butt. If you combine this design with an extra pull-out display, you might just have a winner.
