Posted in MID by Conner Flynn on June 3rd, 2010

It’s not often you come across a gadget that has a name like a Bond villain, but Inventec has done just that, naming its new device Dr. Eye. This new MID opens up like a miniature netbook or notebook, though we aren’t sure why anyone would want a MID like this, what with the popularity of tablet devices.

The device will cost you $400. That’s tablet price territory. Still, if you like it, some specs include: a 4.8-inch touchscreen display, QWERTY keyboard, a 600Mhz Marvell 624 processor, 3G, Wi-Fi, Front-facing webcam, Android 1.6 with the possbility to upgrade to 2.1.

Synaptics shows off touch pad that can tell a palm from a finger

Posted in Computers by Shane McGlaun on June 1st, 2010

When I first started using my netbook when I travelled for work I often ended up hitting the track pad with the palm of my hand. That made whatever I was typing end up in a place other than where I wanted it to be. I ended up having to turn the track pad off when I was doing lots of typing to stop that from happening.

Synaptics has announced new technology at Computex that will stop accidental activation of the track pad by the palm of your hand. The tech is called TouchPad-IS and is capable of recognizing up to four fingers.

Hitachi outs 320GB world’s fastest 7mm hard drive

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on June 1st, 2010

Hitachi is claiming the world’s first 320GB hard disk drive to spin at 7,200 RPM in a 7-mm thick package. The 2.5-inch Serial ATA 3Gbps Travelstar Z7K320 boasts a 1,334Mbps maximum transfer rate with a 16MB cache. This HDD draws 1.8 watts during read/write and 0.8 watts while idle, at 23dB when idle or 24dB when seeking.

Thanks to the slim form factor, it’s ready to boldly go some places that standard 9.5-mm thick drives can’t. Expect these to hit production lines in August and appear in next generation ultra-thin netbooks.

Apple has seen fit to release an update on its iPad sales numbers and they now top 2 million units in as many months. The device is now selling worldwide, which obviously helps to bolster the numbers. The supply is still a bit limited. As of last week, there was a one week delay on the iPad 3G.

Steve Jobs assures everyone that their patience will soon be rewarded as they are working hard to build enough iPads for everyone. To date, 5000 iPad apps have hit the app store.

I guess with all things being equal I and many others would prefer to have a gadget that looked cool over one with a more mundane design. This is the crowd that will like the sound of the new Team TP1023 external HDD.

The drive is designed to look like a sports car, and it does a good job. It reminds me of a Ferrari. The drive has a suspension system to protect the HDD in the event of a drop. Other feature of the external HDD include an energy saving automatic suspend mode when the drive is idle to save power.

Lots of netbook shoppers chose iPad instead

Posted in Apple by Shane McGlaun on May 26th, 2010

The iPad is a very interesting gadget, despite that it is expensive. The device is capable of replacing a netbook for most users and could perhaps even replace a notebook for some. A new survey has shown that a significant amount of people looking for a netbook ended up with the iPad.

The survey was conducted on behalf of retrevo and pooled over a 100 users of different ages, races, and incomes. The survey found that 40% of the pole in the market for a netbook bought a netbook without waiting for the iPad after it was announced.

AViiQ shows off one very portable laptop stand

Posted in Accessories,Notebooks by Shane McGlaun on May 26th, 2010

If I have to work from my laptop or my netbook for any length of time, I almost always take a laptop stand with me. I hate looking down at the screen; it gives me a headache after a while. The catch is that most notebook stands are so bulky you can’t fit them into a notebook bag.

AViiQ has announced a new notebook stand simply called the Portable Laptop Stand, and the name describes the stand well. The little stand is only a quarter of an inch thick when folded up.

Best Buy advertising higher prices as sales?

Posted in Best Buy by Conner Flynn on May 24th, 2010

Just because you see something advertised as a sale, it does not make it a sale. Just like everything you read on the internet is not true. The Consumerist reports that Best Buy seems to have begun advertising some laptops at prices that are higher than their regular price. Then they go ahead and take it one step further by placing “as advertised” signs on the laptops in the store, giving consumers the impression that they’re getting a sweet deal.

No, that ain’t right. But shoppers also need to be alert and not so trusting. A tipster specifically mentions laptops like the Dell and HP models advertised for $649.99 and $699.99 in the ad pictured above, which are $20 and $50 higher than their regular price. Other previous laptops advertised at higher prices also now seem to have gone back to the regular price.

Team unveils 64GB SDXC card

Posted in Storage by Shane McGlaun on May 24th, 2010

I can remember not that many years ago when a SDHC card was only a few megabytes and that was a lot of space. Today SDHC cards can store many, many times that amount of data. The new SDXC format promises even more storage in the same size constraints.

Team has announced that it will be launching a new SDXC card at Computex that has 64GB of storage space. The new card supports the SD3.0 interface and is backwards compatible with SD2.0.

ASUS and Amazon to pre-install Kindle for PC on netbooks and laptops

Posted in ASUS by Conner Flynn on May 24th, 2010

Since ASUS sells a lot of laptops through Amazon.com and since Amazon happens to offer a Kindle for PC application, they figured they would team up and pre-install the app on the ASUS netbooks and laptops that are sold through the online e-tailer. Makes sense right?

So starting today, select laptops, like the Eee PC 1005PE and UL30, will be sold with the e-book app already loaded up. While we don’t generally like pre-installed software cluttering up our new devices, this makes sense.
