Toshiba HDD Platters get 2.5Tb of data on every square inch

Posted in Toshiba by Conner Flynn on August 19th, 2010

SSDs are popular, but traditional hard drives still have a place in our devices. Toshiba has been demonstrating a prototype of a new storage technique called bit-pattern recording. This technique offers a storage density of 2.5Tb per square inch, or to put it another way, about five times more than the company’s current offerings.

They achieve this by placing individual bits onto lithographed “islands” of magnetic material that will protect the charge of the individual bit while allowing the sector to be smaller. We won’t be seeing this until about 2013 however.

iPad kicks Asus in the Eees

Posted in ASUS by Shane McGlaun on August 17th, 2010

If any of you out there though that the iPad would fail, you were so wrong. The iPad is selling faster than Apple can build them and the demand is showing no signs of letting up.

Apple is building all the iPads it can and if it were not for screen shortages, it would build more. The sales success is a good thing for Apple, but not a good thing for other companies like Asus. Asus has announced that its Eee sales forecasts are being reduced to 1.4 million units for Q3.

Posted in Tablet PC by Conner Flynn on August 8th, 2010

The future of Augen’s $150 tablet and $100 smartbook isn’t looking as bright as we had hoped. They have slow processors and resistive touchscreens and now their official Google app privileges have just been revoked.

Augen has confirmed that the entire proprietary suite (including Market, Gmail and more) was preloaded on the devices without Google’s permission, and won’t appear on new batches that make it to store shelves. Augen says it’s working with Google to secure rights to these apps for new products down the road. Hopefully it gets sorted out quickly.
