Dell’s Inspiron Duo is a 10″ Netbook/Tablet that swivels

Posted in Dell by Conner Flynn on September 14th, 2010

The folks at Dell are crazy, throwing all kinds of ideas out there and seeing what sticks. Dell’s new Inspiron Duo is a 10″ tablet that opens up and swivels its screen to transform itself into a netbook. But what’s the point? Why swivel when it can just detach? This is just tablet madness.

They’re saying it will be available before the end of the year. Again crazy talk. Dell may actually be innovating something here. Dell showed off this Windows 7 Premium running and dual-core Atom N550 processor packing thing at the second day keynote of Intel’s IDF conference.

YouTube testing live video streaming

Posted in YouTube by Conner Flynn on September 13th, 2010

YouTube has now made its live streaming plans official and said that it would start trials. It works through a user’s existing YouTube channel and works the same as services like Justin.tv, Qik or Ustream. Users just need a FireWire or USB video camera and have access to live comments for any ongoing show. It’s implied that finished shows will be archived as regular YouTube clips, though they don’t say it outright.

The testing started at 11AM Eastern today with a live broadcast of Rocketboom and will run through late Tuesday. YouTube hasn’t said when this will be a regular feature.

Posted in Storage by Conner Flynn on September 11th, 2010

We all know that the Doctor’s TARDIS is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. Now we know just how big it is. One terabyte. That should be pretty roomy for any toy figures that Max Shanly wants to cram inside his TARDIS.

It took some hard work and probably a sonic screwdriver to get the drive in there, but it’s totally worth it. Now Max is working on hooking up the flashing light up top for hard drive activity.

California testing iPads as algebra textbooks

Posted in iPad by Conner Flynn on September 9th, 2010

We’ve seen iPads being offered on planes and in hotels, and now they are hitting schools. A pilot project in four California school districts will replace 400 students’ eighth-grade algebra textbooks with Apple iPads in an attempt to prove the advantages of interactive digital technologies over traditional teaching methods. He should help to correct their spines as well, since an iPad in the backpack weighs a lot less than a book.

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has teamed up with California Secretary of Education Bonnie Reiss for the pilot, which will take place at Long Beach Unified School District, Riverside Unified School District, Fresno Unified School District and San Francisco Unified School District.
