It took some hard work and probably a sonic screwdriver to get the drive in there, but it’s totally worth it. Now Max is working on hooking up the flashing light up top for hard drive activity.

New ‘super discs’ could hold thousands more than DVDs

A team at the University of Tokyo has found that using titanium oxide could mean that we gets discs with storage capacities more like hard drives. And guess what? The material is cheaper than the stuff used in Blu-ray discs.

Titanium oxide is ideal for disc manufacturing because of the way it reacts to light. At room temperature the material is capable of switching between metal and semiconductor states, which makes it “promising as a material for a next-generation optical storage device,” according to the eggheads.

Seagate says when it shipped its first hard drive in 1979 the thing had a paltry 5MB of storage and cost $1,500. That wouldn’t hold one of your hi-rez LOLKat pics today.

Seagate says that it is the first hard drive manufacturer to ship one billion hard drives. It took Seagate 29 years to ship 1 billion drives and it says that 500 million of the drives shipped in 2007 alone compared to only 30 million shipped in 1990.

Sony develops holographic disks to store 500GB

Data storage news just keeps moving forward. Sony has announced that it will release a multi-layer optical disk that can store over 500GB data.

They are working on it now and the holographic recording technology will have seven layers, producing standard-sized disks with the ability to store 500GB of data of any kind, from HD Video to computer data. They expect the holographic disk to be available sometime in the next 3 years. They are using their “Micro-Reflector” method in order to write to seven layers per disk. Memory density per layer is 1.2 GB and the maximum error rate is 4.1 × 10-4.
