Nintendo 3DS keeps track of hacks, may lead to trade-in bans

Posted in Nintendo 3DS by Conner Flynn on March 9th, 2011

Japanese retailer Enterking has announced that it will not accept Nintendo 3DS gaming consoles that have been used with a hacked memory card for trade-in. So how will the retailer will know? Simple. Because the portable gaming console logs all activity, which can then be retrieved by those in the industry who know how. It is an attempt by Nintendo to deter pirates.

The most common card used is the R4 and some Japanese hackers can already install illegal DS ROMS but not games. Since the system keeps track of any and all hacks and has a Wi-Fi connection, it could also let Nintendo block pirated devices from accessing online services and games.

White iPhone 4 coming in April?

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on March 9th, 2011

According to Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the white iPhone 4 is finally going into mass production this month. The goal is apparently to ship them in April, though the initial run will likely be restricted to GSM models and not include the CDMA version by Verizon. Right now we don’t know of any timeframe for a white CDMA phone.

Apple has promised white models since the iPhone 4′s launch way back in June of 2010. But Apple has had to delay several times and their most recent goal is for a “spring” release. And when the iPad 2 was announced last week, Steve Jobs emphasized that white tablets would be available at the same time as black ones.

Green Shower Radio is powered by water

Posted in Radio by Conner Flynn on March 9th, 2011

Are you green and also like to listen to music in the shower? If so, then check out this new radio called the H2O Shower Powered Radio. The radio connects directly to your shower hose and uses the water pressure to charge its internal battery for playing.

The radio’s H2O micro turbine is spun by the water flowing through the case which powers a generator that charges the battery. Hopefully it doesn’t require super long showers to charge it up.

Sony adds cloud storage for game saves to PSN Plus subscriptions

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on March 9th, 2011

Sony’s PlayStation Plus subscription just became more worthwhile with the new addition of online storage for game saves. It’s coming with v3.60 of the PS3 firmware, which we should receive tomorrow, March 10th.

You will get to save up to 150MB of PlayStation 3 game progress data in Sony’s make.believe cloud. That isn’t a ton of space, but these files are usually small anyway. Really the most interesting aspect here is being able to just put your account details into any PS3 anywhere and play your games.

Is Microsoft working on the Xbox 720?

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on March 9th, 2011

Microsoft may be working on the next generation Xbox, which we might as well call the Xbox 720. This speculation comes from some recently posted some job listings on Linkedin for what seems to be Microsoft’s next generation console.

There are listings for an Audio/Video Hardware Architect, an Audio Architect and a Graphics Architect and the listings reference ‘next generation’ consoles, so this isn’t wild speculation. We have no idea when we might see a new console, but at least they are working on it.

Bad news if you were hoping to play some Killzone 3 in the next 11 hours. Sony has announced that the Playstation Network will be down for 11 hours due to required maintenance. It seems like a long time compared to how long it usually is, but maybe they have a surprise for us.

You will not be able to sign into PSN, Play games online or use the PSN store. Other than that, we don’t have any details, but if you get the message “The PlayStation Network has been suspended.” when trying to login, don’t sweat it. It doesn’t mean your account has been banned.

17,000 USB sticks left at dry cleaners in 2010

Posted in USB Flash Drives by Conner Flynn on March 1st, 2011

Shopping for a USB stick? Might as well just go to a laundromat or a dry cleaners. There has apparently been a 400 per cent increase in the number of USB sticks being left behind in clothes to be dry cleaned. The news comes from a survey taken by more than 500 dry cleaners and laundrettes. About 17,000 USB sticks were left in 2010, that’s four times the number found in 2009.

It’s an epidemic that shows no signs of stopping. Sometimes it is in your shirt, sometimes in your pants, but it always ends up in the wash. Please do your part and save a USB stick today.

Coke and Heinz to use PlantBottles

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on February 24th, 2011

The Coca-Cola Company has announced that its bottle technology will now also be used by Heinz for its ketchup packaging. The bottle technology was launched in 2009 and uses a plastic sourced from sugarcane waste to replace 30 per cent of the plastic in bottles.

Heinz will introduce PlantBottled ketchup this summer across the US. That means that 120 million of its 20-ounce retail and foodservice bottles will now get the partly renewable packaging. These PlantBottles will even have a special label with environmental messages. Coke wants to invest more than $150 million in the PlantBottle technology. Their goal is to reach 100 per cent renewable and recyclable packaging as soon as they can.
