Quiksnap ice tray gives you one cube at a timeSometimes you come across an idea that’s so simple, you wonder why you never thought of it. Or why no one else has until now. This one is a great and simple idea. An ice cube tray that dispenses one ice cube at a time. It’s called the Quicksnap and we’re not the only ones who think it’s a good idea.

It’s a finalist in the Royal College of the Arts design contest, and will be available later this year for single cube action at all your parties. A simple push of the green button and the cube just pops out. So, if you absolutely need to water down those drinks, but want a single cube so as not to water it down too much, you have an easy way to do it.

Lego Digital Box shows 3D models

Posted in lego by Conner Flynn on January 24th, 2009

Lego Digital Box makes 3D modelsLego is awesome, but the sets can be mighty expensive. Some of them will cost you a few hundred bucks. Sometimes it might be nice to actually see what the completed model looks like before you drop a huge wad of dough on it. Augmented reality to the rescue. Metaio, a Germany company has come up with a system that lets you hold the box in front of the screen, then shows you what that model will look like completed. If only we had had this when we were kids.

It’s the only one in existence at the moment, but if Lego is smart, you and I will be seeing these Digital Boxes in stores worldwide. It would really help sales. Plus, after a while they could update it and show you what other things you could build with that same kit.

Posted in Headphones by Conner Flynn on January 23rd, 2009

Bluetribe Bluetooth 2.1 headphonesBluetribe is a new pair of Bluetooth 2.1 headphones with a distinctly unique look from Sigma-Apo of Japan. It will sell with ear pads designed to fit most ears. Fans of Battlestar Galactica will like these right away, as the hexagon shape looks straight from the show. We’re not sure whether these will appeal to non BSG geeks or not, but they are different and retro.

The headphones can operate wirelessly with your iPod for up to 8 hours. They should be available at the end of this month for about 9,980 yen or $112. Looks like these may be a Japan-only deal though.

iPod Cases made from old 45 RPM recordsNow here’s a case for your iPod that is actually interesting and looks unique. These cases are made from old 45s, with a plexiglass window and a cork liner. You have to love this merging of the old format with the new. It just makes sense. And looks damn good.

I love how you can line up the record label in various ways and the center hole of the record is lined up with the iPod’s scroll wheel of course. These awesome cases were made by Contexture Design, but sadly they are completely sold out of the 45 cases right now. You can see why.

Endo Magnets hang up to 1-lb objects on your fridgeIf you’ve ever experienced your share of weak magnets, you can appreciate a good strong magnet. Ever had a magnet on your fridge holding a sheet of paper that is so weak, that you walk by and both magnet and paper fall to the floor? Or a magnet that won’t even fix two or three pieces of paper to the fridge? It’s those little annoyances that we could all do without.

These Endo magnet clips will do the job. Hell, if you want to put a heavy shoe on your fridge, you can. And it will stay. In fact, they can bear a load of 1 LB. Holds 20 sheets of paper. You could even hang up some of your gadgets and keep them organized. Just clip them in place. I’m not saying it’s a good idea to be hanging shoes on your fridge, but it’s nice to know you can.

USB bookmark nerd glasses

USB nerd glassesLooks like the good old nerd glasses are back. They never left really. Worn by the likes of Buddy Holly in years past and every other hipster in the present, nerd glasses are all the rage. Among nerds. Here they are in a new form. Beginning in March, this 2-mm thin 2GB USB bookmark can be purchased for $29.

Bullies might have to change their taunt of “Four eyes” to “Four eyes, two gigs”. These will likely fly off the virtual shelves as everyone loves nerdy stuff. But, a bookmark? Really? What the hell. You saw what dork specs did for Superman. They fooled everybody into thinking he and Clark Kent were different people. Of course there’s always the chance that people in Metropolis were just plain stupid too.

Wobble for iPhoneLike most guys, I have a high appreciation for boobs. I sincerely think that cleavage is the only reason for Jessica Simpson to live. A new app for the iPhone has been announced that will help guys take their appreciation for Baywatch style boobage to a whole new level.

The app is called Wobble and lets you take pictures of your favorite girl (or any other object) and choose specific sections of the image to add a Wobble effect to. Sure, you can make other things wobble like your friends beer belly, but that’s not the real reason for this app.

AMD LogoThe economy is bad and when the leading CPU maker in the world, Intel, announces that its profits aren’t that great and it will be restructuring to better compete you can bet that the second place chipmaker is on rough times as well.

Apple patent would auto-tune volume

Posted in patents by Conner Flynn on January 22nd, 2009

Apple patent would auto-tune volumeIt’s a common problem. You have your headphones on and you’re in a crowd, but the music is drowned out by the crowd. Well, check this out. This Apple patent takes a look at dynamic volume adjustment that is based on your surroundings, not your music.

Looks like a sound sensor would detect the ambient noise and adjust itself based on the situation. The system wouldn’t force you to keep it at it’s own preferences and would take into account the user’s own choices for volume when setting the sound level. Interestingly, the patent application was first filed shortly after the launch of the original iPhone. Obviously Apple isn’t using it to date, but they already use ambient sensors to detect light for the displays on the iPhone, iPod touch etc.
