Samsung launching five new NX lenses

Posted in Cameras by Conner Flynn on February 21st, 2011

Samsung is launching five new lenses for its NX Series of mirror-less cameras, bringing the number of lenses to 10 for that system. These lenses will feature Samsung’s i-Function that allows the user use one physical control to set various parameters of the camera. For example, if you like taking photos without using a flash, Samsung has a few “fast” lenses: the 16mm f2.4 pancake, the 60mm f2.8 and the 85mm f1.4. That last is great for taking portraits indoors.

If you want a “do-it-all” lens, the 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 should work good for you outdoors. There’s also the 16-80mm f3.5-4.5 if you don’t want an extreme zoom.

Other features include a 5.1 megapixel camera, digital TV tuner and an e-wallet function. It will run on Android 2.2 and we aren’t holding our breath waiting for this one in the US. So, how did they get it so thin?

Borders files for bankruptcy

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on February 16th, 2011

It’s official, Borders, the second largest bookstore chain the U.S., has filed for bankruptcy. The company will continue to operate while it restructures, but it will be just a shadow of it’s former self. It has to close around 200 of its stores, about 30 percent. After that, it might need to close another 75.

Though the company hasn’t produced its own e-book reader, it has partnered with Kobo to sell its device, and it has established its own e-book store that is used by various e-reader apps for smartphones and tablets. We don’t know yet if the bankruptcy will affect those or not.

Twitter chief says there will be no self-branded smartphone

Posted in twitter by Conner Flynn on February 15th, 2011

Facebook has some smartphones, so you might think that Twitter would jump on the wagon, but no. Not gonna happen. During a keynote speech at MWC, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo dispelled any notions that the company is working on Twitter-branded cell phone. Even though he says that 40 percent of all tweets originate from cell phones.

The CEO said that Android phones currently allow users to quickly send a photo they took to their Twitter followers and he’d like to see more of the same in other platforms. He’d also like more single sign-on experiences and more apps that allow tweeting directly without going to another app. Hey, we’d all like that.

New slim notebooks to arrive soon, looking for MacBook Air

Posted in Notebooks by Conner Flynn on February 14th, 2011

Apple’s MacBook Air is still enjoying being the slimmest notebook around, since the Dell Adamo has been axed. Soon it will have some competition though since Acer, Asus and Lenovo are all planning to launch new ultra-thin notebooks in the second quarter of 2011 and they will feature components that are more competitive than Apple’s MacBook Air.

That means that they can sell them at a lower price. Acer will release its new Timeline notebooks, Asus will has its U-series slim models and Lenovo is offering new ultra-thin models of its IdeaPad. The prices on these notebooks should be below $1,000.

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on February 12th, 2011

We’ve seen other hacks where the Kinect uses a Nintendo Wiimote, but the creator of this hack used the FAAST emulator for the Kinect and GlovePIE for the Wiimote, allowing you to have some pretty interesting Dead Space 2 games.

One interesting aspect of this hack is the ability to stomp on your the aliens in the game, which looks very satisfying. I’d love to play DS2 like this. Looks like a lot of fun.

BlackBerry PlayBook coming to Verizon?

Posted in Playbook by Conner Flynn on February 9th, 2011

Of course the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet will be heading to Sprint with support for its 4G WiMAX network, but what about Verizon? Well, it looks like Verizon will be getting it as well. A page was discovered that previously allowed users to join an early-access type of program for the PlayBook on Verizon.

Looks like the site is owned by a marketing agency that works for RIM and Verizon, so it looks credible. There’s no official confirmation that the PlayBook will be arriving on Verizon though. I guess we will see what happens.

Dell discontinues Adamo laptop

Posted in Dell by Conner Flynn on February 9th, 2011

Sad news for the Dell Adamo today. After aggressively discounting the Adamo 13 over the holidays and then again in the new year, Dell has given up on its stylish ultraportable. The Adamo’s biggest problem was its price-to-performance ratio, but it did sport some amazing design.

Hopefully Dell has something just as eye-catching coming soon, but if you still want the Adamo, you should still be able to get one for a bargain price at Dell’s refurbished outlet. However, I would hurry.
