Like many Sci-Fi novels shows and movies, Star Trek showed us futuristic gadgets that at the time were complete Science fiction, but soon came to be a reality. Here’s a list of such technology, in no particular order.

These might be new to you if you have always been far to enamored with the women of Star Trek to notice the tech and gadgets. I don’t blame you, from Yeoman Rand to Tasha Yar, to Beverly Crusher and beyond, there’s some hot babes gallivanting around in the final frontier. Before we get so easily sidetracked, back to the theme. Star Trek gadgets and tech. Some you can own, some are in the works and some are just strange.

Anyone that’s spent an entire day on the phone with their hands on a keyboard knows that a good headset is worth its weight in at least some type of precious metal to make your day easier. The Sennheiser SH 300 headset is not wireless, there’s no Bluetooth and it’s got a mono-speaker, but on the upside its cord will likely fit into the port that the current crappy headset you’re using at work is plugged into now.

The SH 300 works for right or left head mounting, doesn’t mess up your ‘do and has some noise cancellation technology to block out all the others in the cube around you, giving a much more peaceful conversation for you and the party on the other end. The microphone also gives excellent sound quality to help cut down on all the “whats” generated by poor headsets.

Samsung brought out at CES this week to showcase an upscale version of its popular UMPC line up. This latest high performance model is known as the Samsung Q1UP-XP and Samsung says it will be available for around $1,400.

The Samsung Q1UP-XP (Q1 Ultra Premium UMPC) has a seven-inch backlit LCD with is touch sensitive and has a native resolution of 1024 x 600. It’s powered by a 1.33GHz ULV Intel Core Solo U1500 Pentium CPU and offers up to 7.5 hours of battery life. It also features a split-QWERTY keyboard, 80GB hard drive and is based on the Microsoft Windows XP Tablet Edition operating system.

Samsung and T-Mobile are teaming on a new mobile phone which supports the latter’s HotSpot @Home service for placing calls over 802.11 wireless networks. The Samsung Katalyst is priced around $80 with rebate and service plan.

The Samsung Katalyst is a slider style cell phone which lets you make calls over wireless Internet networks such as those found on your home network or at T-Mobile Hotspots. The call can be carried over to T-Mobile’s regular network when one leaves a wireless zone. One can instant message with others on several different networks using the Katalyst and also make use of wireless Bluetooth technology for hands-free communication.

The makers of the Mini MOB mobile phone apparently feel that a little nostalgia might help spur some mobile phone sales, letting the cutting edge business man of the 80′s relive the days of carrying a brick-style phone around (unfortunately there doesn’t appear to be a super-sized charging cradle to match).

Like the Brick Phone we saw earlier this year, the Mini MOB does bring some modern features into their neo-brick including a camera, MP3/MP4 player and a miniSD memory card slot and an included 128 MB card. The phone is also slightly smaller than those heavy solid models of 20 years ago measuring 11cm tall by 3.5cm wide (and an estimated 4cm deep). It comes with two batteries that are charged through a USB cable and take advantage of the extra size with 30 days of standby and 3 days of continuous talk time.

Nokia sure has a knack for offering us new cell phones to lust after. The new N82, which we first detailed earlier this year, is back again with official pricing and a release date. You can expect to pick it up for around 450 euros.

The Nokia N82 is what Nokia sees as being part digital camera, part mobile. It sports five-megapixels and is outfitted with Carl Zeiss optics and autofocus with a dedicated autofocus assist lamp. Another top end feature is built-in GPS, complete with preloaded maps and access to more than 15 million points of interest. Nokia even throws in 802.11 wireless connectivity.

T-Mobile along with RIM launched a new, upgraded BlackBerry Curve today that not only features Wi-Fi for data but can also connect voice through the Wi-Fi connection via Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) and the HotSpot@Home service. The BlackBerry 8320 can take advantage of both the current EDGE network or a Wi-Fi connection when available, seamlessly switching between the two during a call.

When using UMA, users of the 8320 can talk through a 802.11g wireless home network or public Wi-Fi hotspot without racking up any talk-time minutes as they would through the standard cellular EDGE voice connection. The new Curves from T-Mobile will come in new colors of titanium silver (shown here) or a pale gold (exclusively through T-Mobile) but other than that are pretty much the same as the original BlackBerry Curve. The BlackBerry 8320 has a 2 megapixel camera, media player, microSD expansion slot, full QWERTY keyboard and takes advantage of T-Mobiles myFaves for 5 friends from any carrier.

Pantech has begun selling on American shores through AT&T one of its stylish camera phones. The Pantech C150 looks to be available now.

The Pantech C150, which won a design award last year, comes in a candy bar style design and white form factor color. It has a 128×160 pixel screen and is .49 inches thick. It has many of the features you’d normally find through a phone of this type including Bluetooth, support for several mobile e-mail services such as Yahoo and AOL, polyphonic sound and a VGA camera.

Mobile Wi-Fi fans, here is your BlackBerry. Research In Motion (RIM) has now officially launched that new dual-mode smartphone we’ve all been waiting for. The Blackberry 8820 sports the desirable broad connectivity of working on global cellular networks (quad-band GSM/GPRS and EDGE) as well as 802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi networks and it even has GPS built-in.

According to a recent study, iPod music players can cause implanted cardiac pacemakers to malfunction and produce false reading while monitoring heart rhythms. The study was done by a 17-year-old Michigan high school student in conjunction with a team from the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, and presented to the Hearth Rhythm Society’s annual session in Denver.

Today Samsung has officially announced the release of the Q1 Ultra UMPC in the US along with pricing, about a year after the introduction of the new Ultra Mobile PC product segment from Samsung along with Microsoft and Intel.

The Samsung Q1 Ultra will be available in a few different configurations with either a 600MHz or 800MHz Intel A100 processor, 1GB of memory, a 40GB or 60GB hard drive and either Vista Home or Windows XP Tablet OS, depending on the model. The folks over at CNET seem to have gotten an exact iPhone release date of June 11th just by simply calling and asking. Apparently through calling Cingular’s customer service last Thursday they were transferred to sales and given the date. Who knew that all we had to do was ask?
