Logitech’s Google TV box gets official: $300, camera, mobile apps

Posted in Logitech by Conner Flynn on October 6th, 2010

Logitech has confirmed the first Google TV device, the Revue. It will focus on the Android-based platform’s hybrid TV/web searching and TV apps but should also have strong support for Logitech’s other devices. It can act as a Harmony gateway, with new iOS and Android apps. It also supports the same Unifying receiver technology that is found in its mice and keyboards, so it supports existing peripherals as well as the pre-supplied keyboard and optional diNovo mini-based Mini Controller.

A Media Player app on the Revue will get media from computers on the local network through DLNA. And of course it can output up to 1080p over HDMI and has two USB ports for accessories like the new TV Cam webcam for video chats over Logitech’s Vid. The device works with traditional remotes through IR blaster inputs and gets online using Ethernet or 802.11n Wi-Fi.

Blockbuster files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on September 23rd, 2010

We’ve been expecting this one for a long time and now it’s official. Blockbuster has initiated “pre-arranged” chapter 11 proceedings. Under this plan, Blockbuster’s debt would be reduced from $1 billion to about $100 million when implemented.

Blockbuster is currently evaluating its US store portfolio as part of the recapitalization process. All 3,000 stores will remain open for now, but up to 1,000 could be gone before things are said and done. They want you to know that Blockbuster is still open and that it’s business as usual during the restructuring.

Control your iPhone with your mind

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on September 7th, 2010

If only you could command your iPhone with your thoughts? Maybe you can after all. That’s the idea behind the XWave, a headset that turns your brain’s electrical activity into signals that can control your phone.

Details are scarce, but it is basically an interpreter, a middle man if you will, that allows your head and your iPhone to communicate. The XWave has a pad that rests on your forehead, picking up the tiny electrical signals that change along with your changing thoughts. The headset comes bundled with some apps that let you control your music library etc, and PLX is seeking out developers to create new apps for the headset as well.

Posted in Dell by Conner Flynn on August 24th, 2010

Dell has been talking up the world’s lightest Android phone since way back in March, and today it officially arrives for $100 with a 2-year AT&T contract. Complete with a dated operating system that is over a year behind. (Android 1.5) And to make matters worse there’s no word on when—or if—we can expect a Froyo update.

That wouldn’t be so sad, except that otherwise its a decent phone. Some features include a 5MP camera with 8x zoom, up to 32GB microSD memory, and a 624Mhz processor on a $100 phone.

Posted in Tablet PC by Conner Flynn on August 8th, 2010

The future of Augen’s $150 tablet and $100 smartbook isn’t looking as bright as we had hoped. They have slow processors and resistive touchscreens and now their official Google app privileges have just been revoked.

Augen has confirmed that the entire proprietary suite (including Market, Gmail and more) was preloaded on the devices without Google’s permission, and won’t appear on new batches that make it to store shelves. Augen says it’s working with Google to secure rights to these apps for new products down the road. Hopefully it gets sorted out quickly.

Xtraordinay Adventures offers budget space flights for rich folk

Posted in Space by Shane McGlaun on July 30th, 2010

I would not think that someone who had $100k to drop on a suborbital space flight would quibble much about an extra few grand or even an extra hundred grand. The folks with the disposable income to take a joy ride into space probably don’t think twice about that kind of money.

A company called Xtraordinary Adventures has announced that it is pre-booking suborbital space flights on its reusable Lynx spacecraft for $95,000. The company points out that its price is $7000 less than Space Adventures and $100,000 less than Virgin Galactic’s price.

OWC offers more RAM for buyers of new iMac

Posted in Apple by Shane McGlaun on July 29th, 2010

Every time I look at computers on a manufacturer’s site, I get a little sick to my stomach when I see how much they want to charge you for RAM and HDD upgrades. Sometimes even a small upgrade can add a $100 or more to the price you pay.

If you tend to buy your rigs with the minimum RAM available and upgrade alter you aren’t alone. OWC has announced that it has new RAM kits put together specifically for the newly updated iMac computers.
