ioSafe’s Fireproof, Waterproof External Drive Tested

Posted in Review,Storage by Darrin Olson on October 7th, 2009

ioSafe Solo external hard drive is waterproof and fireproofioSafe, a technology producer of disaster proof storage hardware, launched the ioSafe Solo in January and this week we took the opportunity to test one out to see how well it would hold up. The ioSafe Solo is a rugged external drive designed to keep your stuff safe in the event of a disaster such as a fire, flood or the building literally falling around it.

The ioSafe is not shockproof however and is not designed to be dropped from great distances or thrown around. It is however built to withstand intense heat (up to 1550 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes), complete submersion (up to 10 feet for 3 days!) and is encased in a rugged enclosure making it like the Sherman tank of external drives.

Touch-sensitive LaCie Starck drivesThe new LaCie Starck drives are super sexy and look like melting chrome. Has storage ever been this sensuous? They were designed by Philippe Starck. The pair come in the form of the LaCie Starck Mobile Hard Drive and Desktop Hard Drive.

Some features include an LED indicator in the shape of Starck’s sign that is projected onto the table, and the fact that the surface is touch sensitive, so you can assign actions to different kinds of touch. For instance, a tap will trigger the launch of an application, while a caress can start an automatic backup.

Xbox 360 Wireless N Adapter coming November 3rd, $100Good news and bad news. The good news is that the Xbox 360 Wireless N Adapter will be available on November 3rd. The bad news is that it will cost you $100 to get your Xbox 360 online using it.

Yep, looks like that $100 rumored price we heard about awhile back is right on target, according to GameStop. I don’t think they are going to sell very many at that price. Is this Microsoft trying to offset the recent price drop of the console itself?

Gyrobike trades training wheels for a gyrowheelYou know the deal. When you’re just a little tyke getting the hang of riding your bike, you need training wheels. Well, the kids of the future are laughing at you. They are all using the Gyrowheel instead of training wheels, on a Gyrobike.

It allows the rider to stay balanced without training wheels and still learn to ride the bike. Think of it as invisible training wheels. The 12-inch wheel replaces the standard front tire, and has an adjustable-speed spinning disc that’s powered by a rechargeable battery.

LaCie's Sound2 USB Speakers look goodLaCie’s Sound2 USB speakers almost look too good. What are they hiding? Are they overcompensating for something? Hmmm. You don’t usually think LaCie when you think audio, but these look so nice we are willing to believe that they must sound good too. We hope.

The Sound2 laptop speakers are USB-powered, with the audio coming from Cabasse, a French audio company. They were designed by Neil Poulton and will cost you $100. Like Fox Mulder, we “want to believe” that these beauties sound good at that price.

Nintendo goes official with new $199 price for Wii

Posted in Nintendo by Shane McGlaun on September 24th, 2009

wii-sbPretty much everyone has heard by now that the Nintendo Wii is getting a price cut to $199. The cut has been reported as confirmed; but that confirmation was from a third party, not directly from Nintendo.

Nintendo has now gone officially official with the new price cut, which is set to go into effect on Sunday September 27. That is the day that we were expecting the price cut to hit on. I wonder if Nintendo rushed the official announcement out because so many leaks of the new price had been made.

Microsoft confirms 802.11n Xbox 360 adapterArstechnica has a mole. No, it’s not as bad as it sounds. It doesn’t chew up the house or dig in the yard or anything, or hang off Cindy Crawford’s face. It just hands them info now and again. According to that mole, the updated 802.11n wireless adapter will be $100.

The older G adapter will drop down to $80. Still pretty expensive when you compare it to regular Wi-Fi adapters, but whatever. The new adapter has the ability to stream 1080p video and is tied to Microsoft’s upcoming Zune video store update to Xbox Live later this year.

Sony BDP-N460 video streaming Blu-ray Player with Netflix for $250

Posted in Blu-ray by Conner Flynn on September 9th, 2009

Sony BDP-N460 video streaming Blu-ray Player with Netflix for $250The BDP-N460 is the Sony Blu-ray player we’ve all been waiting for, but it’s missing a few important things. The most important being Wi-Fi. For $250 it streams video through Bravia Internet Video and that includes Netflix. In place of Wi-Fi, it features “specially designed” software for Linksys’s $100 Wi-Fi dongle. Ummm, that’s just not right Sony.

Once you add the $100 for the dongle, it’s about the same price as other Blu-Ray players on the market that actually have Wi-Fi.
