Rock Band 2One of my favorite games to play on my PS3 is Rock Band. My family and I and several friends from the neighborhood get together almost every weekend for a faux jam session. The game is addictive and the coolest part is that unlike most video games — even the ladies enjoy Rock Band.

Harmonix, EA, and MTV Games announced today that Rock Band 2 would be shipping for the Xbox 360 on September 14 — that is next Sunday. The same week the new Rock Band 2 instrument controllers will also begin shipping. However, the controllers may not be available the day the game launches.

Star Trek art car: Worst starship ever?

Posted in Automotive by Conner Flynn on September 10th, 2008

Star Trek art car: Worst starship ever?Right off the bat, this is not in the same league as the Final Frontier bike. Apparently this comes from Greece where Star Trek must be very different. Apparently in their Star Trek starships are black little vehicles with a weak version of the saucer section bursting out of the roof, tiny red nacelles in back for speed and their own version of the Fonz giving two thumbs up.

I shouldn’t be so harsh. It says Star Trek Fan Club of Athens on it and they probably don’t have that large of a budget. Fact is any Trek car is awesome just because it exists. Still, if the klingon fan club pulled up next you at a light, they would laugh their facial ridges off and you would feel rightly embarrassed.

Swype: Just slide to type

Swype: Just slide to typeCliff Kushler is the inventor of T9 Keyboard technology, and now he has another revolutionary technology that will make texting even easier. It’s called Swype is as simple as tapping on your touch screen and sliding your stylus/finger to all the letters of a word and lifting after each word is finished. It’s smart thanks to a built-in 65,000-word dictionary that corrects obvious spelling errors. If there are alternate options, a word menu pops up. A nudge upwards will capitalize the words, and a wiggle will allow for double letter entry.

This will make many users lives easier. The technology was developed with Windows Mobile, the tablet version of XP and Vista, and Surface in mind, but the iPhone could really use it. Kushler says he can type 55 words per minute using it. Everyday users may not fair that well, but it will still be easy to use.

The Eolos pipe for the sophisticated smoker of tomorrow

The Eolos pipe for the sophisticated smoker of tomorrowGone are the days when you could come home from work and expect your wife to have your slippers, smoking jacket and pipe ready for you as you lay back in your EZ-Boy. Nowadays if you light up in the wrong place you’re likely to get kicked out, arrested and labeled a communist. But that all may change. In the future tobacco might be hip again.

The Eolos pipe is ready for such a world, thanks to designer Hakan Bogazpinar. It has a sleek sophistication that says I Like My Nicotine Like I like My Gadgets, shiny and emitting smoke. It even has a built-in “filter replication indicator,” letting you know when the filter is ready for changing. Of course in the future humans will have self-cleaning lungs so just light up and enjoy my friends. And if wives still wont bring you your slippers, your robot will.

By land or by sea: The Di-Cycle

Posted in Personal Transport by Conner Flynn on September 10th, 2008

By land or by sea: The Di-CycleThe Di-Cycle, by GBO Design is an amphibious bike designed for the city of Helmond in the Netherlands, because the city has just as many watery channels as it does actual roads. Therefore, the residents all want to make like amphibians, skimming across water.

The idea is that riders would be able to skim over the water just as if they were going across the land. Somehow I just don’t see that happening. It’s more likely to flip you over and fill your lungs with water as it keeps going, eventually depositing your corpse on the road your soul never made it to. It remains a concept for the moment thankfully.

iShow Micro Projector concept

iShow Micro Projector conceptWhen Moti Barzilay had to design something iconic in the Apple universe of products, something he felt was missing, the iShow was the end result. It’s a portable projector designed for Apple’s line of iPods, iPhones, and MacBooks.

The body turns on when you pull the two discs apart to reveal a pico projector and some ports. The projection system is LED based. Not very many details other then that, but since it’s a concept we can hope for HD resolution and the ability to roll itself around and take a charge by becoming a yo-yo and offering up some nice tricks with the string. That would be something to see Steve Jobs play with on stage.

Wellness Skull is a morbid sauna

Posted in Exercise Gadgets by Conner Flynn on September 10th, 2008

Wellness Skull is a morbid saunaThe Wellness Skull, designed by Atelier Van Lieshout allows people to sweat out illness inside of an actual skull. Because it’s not just for witches and goblins anymore. Others want to get fit in a morbid way too. It features an integrated sauna in the head with a bath located in the neck. Those nearby outside can see hot steam escape through the skull’s eyes.

If that’s not enough for the skull lover in you, the designer also offers up the Sensory Deprivation Skull, which is a chamber where you can get away from it all. The Sensory Deprivation Skull is made of reinforced fiberglass and measures 150cm x 110cm x 137cm. Only 10 are available, which is a good thing. Seeing too many people crawling out of skulls would just be plain weird.
