WMA

WMA (Windows Media Audio) is Microsoft’s proprietary audio file compression format. WMA was meant as a competitor to the hugely popular MP3 but so far its popularity is limited.

WMA encoded files can often be identified by their extension: .wma. For example a file named nationalanthem.wma is probably a WMA encoded music file.

WMA supports DRM which makes it a good choice for protected content. Many media players are WMA capable. Also Windows Media Player Player has built in support for WMA. Many other players including RealPlayer and Winamp are capable of playing WMA encoded content.
