3G is an abbreviation for third-generation technology. In the context of digital mobile networks it is used to refer to the ability to transfer both voice data and non-voice data (such as instant messaging and email) simultaneously. 3G will support bandwidth-intensive applications such as video, video-conferencing and Internet access. 3G networks are not upgrades of 2G networks nor do they operate on the same frequency spectrum. 3G networks are entirely new networks with new frequencies assigned to mobile operators.
