Xbox Live Silver to be called ‘Xbox Live Free Membership’

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on October 21st, 2010

It’s all in the name. Microsoft is renaming its free Xbox Live Silver service to “Xbox Live Free Membership,” according to a tweet from European community manager Graeme Boyd. Anything with free in the name does sound better to the ear. This comes alongside the refreshed Xbox.com and the Xbox Live Gold price hike, as part of an apparent pre-Kinect relaunch of the Xbox’s online presence.

The new name no longer emphasizes Silver’s status as subordinate to Gold, but instead highlights the advantage of that level of membership being free. In a followup tweet, Boyd clarified that the feature set for Silver won’t change.

Kinect User Manual reveals mandatory 6 to 8 feet distance

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on October 6th, 2010

Better move that coffee table out of the way. If you have a super small living room, you better re-arrange it. If you plan on using the Kinect that is. Some pages from the upcoming Kinect’s user manual have surfaced, and it confirms what some folks have been worrying about. That you will need some spare space.

The manual suggests that players stand about six feet away from the sensor to be visible. If there are two people playing, they should stand eight feet away. It won’t be an issue for many of us, but if you have a small room it could be a problem.

Microsoft says next console still years away

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on September 23rd, 2010

The Xbox 360 is approaching its 5th birthday, and so should we be wondering when Microsoft will be releasing a successor to the console? We can wonder all we like, but Xbox UK director Stephen McGill has now said outright that we can forget it

He stated that there is still life in the Xbox 360 and that they’re still years away from what comes next. I wonder how long it will be before Microsoft actually does release a new console.

Real Murder XBox 360 controller is gruesome

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on September 19th, 2010

Maybe video games aren’t so violent. This controller is far more frightening than any game I’ve ever played. The Real Murder Controller is an Xbox 360 controller which is covered in bloodsplatters. The right stick is even soaked in blood and it even has a set of 9mm bullet ABXY buttons.

There’s also a special 8-mode rapid fire modification. I guess with this controller it really feels like you have been in a fight. The Real Murder Controller is $125 of ugly and violence in the palm of your hand.

New Xbox 360 controller confirmed for November 9, $65

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on August 31st, 2010

We heard some rumors this morning about Microsoft planning a new Xbox 360 controller. One with an improved D-pad. Sure enough we have some confirmation now. The new D-pad is a disc in it’s basic configuration, but give it a twist and it raises about a quarter-inch.

The analog sticks will be slightly more concave, and the ABXY buttons will be translucent monochrome. The new matte silver controller will only come bundled with the Play and Charge kit for $64.99 when it launches on November 9 in the States and replaces the existing wireless controller.

Microsoft prepping new Xbox 360 controller with improved d-pad?

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on August 31st, 2010

According to Joystiq, sometime this Holiday season, Microsoft will launch a new Xbox 360 controller with a unique d-pad. When you rotate the d-pad ninety degrees on this new controller, it will raise up about a quarter of an inch.

Apparently this is aimed at fighting game fans. We aren’t sure if it will be a separate, special controller or will replace the existing controller.

Xbox Live Gold price increasing November 1st

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on August 30th, 2010

Here’s some sad news. We can’t say it’s unexpected though. Microsoft’s Major Nelson has just announced that Xbox Live Gold will be getting more expensive not only in the US, but also in the UK, Canada, and Mexico starting November 1.

One month will go from $7.99 to $9.99, three months will go from $19.99 to $24.99, and the yearly subscription will now be $59.99, up from $49.99. Microsoft is running a “lock in” promo for a discounted $40 one-year Gold sub starting November 1, which is nice if your subscription is ready to expire around then.

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on August 27th, 2010

A few weeks back Microsoft was sending out invites, inviting folks to participate in the Kinect Beta Program. Well, users are reporting that they are participating in the program, and pictures have been circulating showing the Kinect-enabled dashboard update on consoles.

There’s a flatter presentation, a new mini-guide, and a revamped Avatar editor. The beta support site mentions Kinect Adventures, Kinect Sports and Kinect Joy Ride as titles they can expect to receive for testing purposes.

Halo Reach is one of the most anticipated games of the year for the Xbox 360. Now it has been leaked nearly a month ahead of its September 14th launch date. As you already know, Halo is one of the best selling game franchises for the console.

Game-tut.com allegedly managed to get a copy of the game from Microsoft’s servers and made it available for download through torrents. Gamers have already uploaded several videos on YouTube, if you want some spoilers. The official launch is September 14th.

Iron Man Xbox 360 on Ebay

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on August 23rd, 2010

We’ve seen plenty of painted and modded Xbox 360s in our day, even an Xbox 360 laptop, but until now we’ve never seen what Tony Stark’s Xbox 360 looks like.

And thanks to Zachariah Perry Cruse, we now know. It looks just like his armor. The design student spent his summer vacation creating his very own Iron Man Xbox 360. It’s not the slim 360 console, but it has a 120GB hard drive and an HDMI socket. Why not place a bid?

GameStop sells Xbox 360′s 250GB upgrade drive early

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on August 22nd, 2010

The upcoming 250GB Xbox 360 hard drive is now being offered for sale at GameStop for its $130 price. Oddly this comes ahead of any official announcement from Microsoft. The drive is an upgrade for the new, slim Xbox Arcade, which includes only 4GB of built-in storage.

To refresh your memory, the drive ships preloaded with the Hexic HD game as well as with demos of A Kingdom for Kefflings, Peggle and Pinball FX. It is said to be shipping within 24 hours of you placing the order.

Xbox 360 commercial gets pulled for using PS3 footage

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on August 18th, 2010

It’s kind of funny that Microsoft’s ad agency thought they could get away with showing PS3 Final Fantasy XIII scenes, but that is just what happened. A very savvy British viewer dimed them out to the Advertising Standards Authority and the commercial was quickly pulled following a comparison of gameplay between the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions.

The ASA said that “we noted that there was a discernible difference in the picture quality of the two—the PS3 image in video sequences appeared sharper and colors were more vivid than those of the Xxbox 360.” Duh.

Microsoft Kinect for Xbox 360 launching November 10 in Europe

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on August 17th, 2010

Microsoft’s new controller-free Kinect for the Xbox 360 will be hitting the US on November 4th. But what about Europe? Well, we’ve learned that it will officially hit Europe, the Middle East, and Africa on November 10th.

Sure, that’s quite a wait, but until then you still have your hands and plenty of titles to play. And just so you are aware, we’re looking at the same 15 exclusive Kinect game titles already announced at E3. Otherwise nothing new.

New Xbox 360 250GB hacked to play backup discs

Posted in Xbox 360 by Conner Flynn on August 15th, 2010

We are pretty sure Microsoft isn’t happy about this, but a video has surfaced which claims to have successfully patched the DVD drive to play burned discs on the new Xbox 360. The issue isn’t just about piracy though. Many Xbox users like to burn a backup copy of their game CDs in case the original disc gets damaged.

Even so, I’m sure microsoft will be on this quickly, trying to figure out a way to prevent the hack. The group behind the video(It can be found below) claims that the patch will be available soon, which is good news if you want to backup games for your new Xbox 360.
