Smartbolt tells you when to stop screwing

Posted in Tools by Conner Flynn on December 6th, 2008

Smartbolt tells you when to stop screwingMankind lives in such an amazing techno-golden-age that even the bolt is getting smart. That’s why it’s called the Smartbolt, it’s equipped with a tiny indicator disk on top that shows you just how tight it is. No fancy electronics, just a simple visual tension indicator that starts out red and turns more black as it gets tightened. Looks like a nipple, which makes sense. Mine would turn colors if you gave them a twist too. They even have a more-precise version that goes from yellow to green when 90% tight, then black at 100%.

This is a great invention, mostly because torque wrench’s tend to be large and hard to maneuver in tight spaces. If we can get regular screws to do this, that would be awesome.

Black and Decker Thermal Leak Detector

Black and Decker Thermal Leak DetectorWinter is here. And so, it’s time to fix those cold air leaks. That’s where Black and Decker’s Thermal Leak Detector comes in. Your current method of sliding your fingers down window seams until you feel cold air works okay, but the leak detector takes a high tech approach.

It detects temperature changes as small as a single degree. When it finds a trouble area where cold air is leaking in, a blue spotlight points you towards the problem. Pretty handy little tool for $40. Once it starts detecting leaks and you start sealing them, it will pay for itself in no time.

Craftsman Nextec Hammerhead Auto Hammer

Craftsman Nextec Hammerhead Auto HammerThe name is a mouthful, but this tool is a long overdue upgrade to the traditional hammer. Without a single swing, it will drive up to 3.5-inch nails with just the pull of a trigger. It’s powered by a 12-volt Lithium-Ion battery and works great in tight spaces.

The best part of course is that it’s a tool for the extremely lazy. Much like me, it nails at 2000 impacts/minute. Just ask the ladies. It also sports a retractable nail sleeve and magnetic head that makes it easy to operate one-handed.

TriVac blower/mulcher/vacuum makes rakes obsolete

Posted in Tools by Conner Flynn on November 10th, 2008

TriVac blower/mulcher/vacuum makes rakes obsoleteHow many times have you seen landscapers just blowing leaves from one spot to another, not really accomplishing anything? Usually they just blow them on someone else’s property and they’ll go back and forth like that until fists eventually fly, or two grown men end up fighting in a pile of leaves. Not a pretty sight.

This tool will eliminate any and all hassles when it comes to leaf blowing/sucking/mulching and you won’t even need your rake. The TriVac blower, mulcher and vacuum by Worx promises to make the leaves leave with as little work as possible. It lets you switch between blowing and vacuuming on the fly and it weighs just eight pounds, allowing you to operate it with just one hand. It will mulch leaves as they are sucked up. This may be the final blow in the battle to rid our planet of dead leaves, which have an annual failed invasion force once a year.

Finger Grip Socket Set turns your finger into a socket

Finger Grip Socket Set turns your finger into a socketJust how much torque can your finger generate anyway? If you order the Finger Grip Socket Set for $19.99 I guess you’ll find out. I don’t think you’ll be doing anything heavy duty like rebuilding an engine.

It’s a finger-mounted tool that nuts and bolts fit into. You’ll get 10 US sizes (3/16″ to 9/16″) and 10 metric sizes (6mm to 15mm). Even works with your gloves on in cold weather, though they probably should have mounted the tools straight on a glove in the first place. This thing takes working with your hands to a whole new level.

Black & Decker Auto Wrench for lazy mechanics

Posted in Tools by Conner Flynn on October 13th, 2008

Black & Decker Auto Wrench for lazy mechanicsIs it me or are we getting a little too lazy? Granted, there are times I wish I could speed things up as I tighten my wrench around a nut, I mean it takes a whole two seconds, but I think it’s important that we do at least that much without the aid of a battery to help. Otherwise what are we but monkeys whose brains atrophy a bit more with every quick-fix button we push. Ah, screw it. Now that I know this wrench is available, I ain’t never tightenin’ anything the hard way ever again.

This Black & Decker 8-inch Automatic Adjustable Wrench will quickly clamp down on any nut or bolt up to 1.25-inches when you touch the button. Downside? Don’t piss off your girlfriend, because this baby can pinch with 220 ft-lbs of torque. So…Not a good thing to have laying around, lest you find your own nuts in a vise. The price is $27 and you’ve been warned.

Micro-Max is 19 tools in one

Micro-Max is 19 tools in oneWe love multi-tools. Probably because they are like Transformers, but with tools instead of bots. This one looks like a weird robot-tool crab in the pic. The Micro-Max tool transforms into not two or three, but nineteen different useful tools. With this one you get six different screwdrivers, two hex wrenches, a bottle opener, pliers, file, and wire tools. These are perfect for DIY junkies. But at only $13 I’m not sure it will last you long. Still, it’s a nice cheap way to ensure that you always have tools on your person.

13 in 1 Multi Tool Pen has MacGuyver written all over it
We’ve seen our share of multi-tools, but I don’t think we’ve ever seen a multi tool pen before. My guess is that this would be MacGuyver’s pen of choice. It’s got so many useful tools inside, it will definitely get you out of a jam and help you build a plane out of duct tape and porn mags.

Tools include a Ballpoint Pen, Hole Puncher, Stainless Steel File, Short Cutting Blade, Flat Screwdriver, Wire Sleeve Remover/Small Nail Remover, Ear Pick(wtf), Long Cutting Blade, Tweezer, Philips Screwdriver, Stainless Steel Fork and Saw. It’s worth a shot at only $14.95. You never know when you’re going to need a pen AND a fork at the same time. And there’s always the rare occasion when you need both and an ear pick.

Cordless electric chain saw on a stick

Posted in Tools by Conner Flynn on August 18th, 2008

Cordless electric chain saw on a stickBig and bulky electric chainsaws may be good for lumberjacks and serial killers, but what about the average guy who just wants to trim some branches that are fourteen feet up? It’s a situation we find ourselves in all too often. If only I had a cordless chainsaw on a long stick.

In fact, who needs ladders at all when you have a chainsaw on stick? The Black & Decker 18-Volt Cordless Electric Pole Chain Saw can reach up to 14 feet and cuts branches six inches in diameter. It weighs in at 7.6 pounds. Does this mean that all of the chainsaw wielding maniac movies will have to be redone. I mean now they can kill from a distance. You can get one for $120.

Most expensive Leatherman ever costs $40,000
Normally if you are a DIY kind of guy, you would just whip out your Leatherman or other similarly priced multi-tool. But if you want to fix things in style, while worrying about breaking a $40,000 tool this Leatherman is for you.

It’s more for say, the handyman in charge of a palace, or the rapper who has absolutely run out of bling options. Leatherman’s 25th annivesary Argentum collection is all about looks, but they still are fully functional. The collection ranges from the $12,000 Acanto to the $40,000 Dorado, and are the work of artist Adrian Pollarols.

Lil’ Guppie multitool, versatile as any big fish

Lil’ Guppie multitool, versatile as any big fish
Seems like the new generation of multi-tools have some odd designs. Much like the Spyderco Byrdwrench, the Lil’ Guppie (doesn’t that sound like what the skipper would call Gilligan in an underwater Gilligan’s Island show?) has an odd look.

The Lil’ Guppie is tiny enough to fit on your keychain, but super versatile still. The adjustable wrench can open up pretty wide for it’s size, and it’s tininess is actually an asset, letting you get into all kinds of tight areas. It also sports a razor-sharp blade inside, and it’s tail is a flat-blade screwdriver bit. Need a Phillips head? It conveniently slips right out from inside. Of course it wouldn’t be a multi-tool without a bottle opener, so it performs that duty as well.

Wrench tightens nuts by hand, literally

Wrench tightens nuts by hand, literally
Normally cranking your nuts by hand is frowned upon. I guess that’s no longer the case. Surprisingly, this tool was not designed for booty grabbing hijinx within automotive shops. I think. I’m really not sure why it was designed, but we love it. I’d be surprised if it worked as good as a regular wrench, but it’s a great way to add some comedy to your otherwise serious toolbox.

Everytime you adjust the fingers to fit your needs, it’s as if a little hand is holding two fingers up saying, “Do you love me this much?” and so forth. It’s all rather creepy, truth be told. I think it has to be used for evil. Yes, I think it must be made to pinch a woman’s butt at least once in it’s career.
