It never ceases to amaze me just how many SpongeBob related products are on the market. You would think his popularity would wane, but he must have nearly as many products as Star Wars by now. It also amazes me, how some of these products are not very well thought out.

For instance, this SpongeBob thermometer. It’s all cute and kid-like and la-de-da. It will even play music while being used. It actually plays the “SpongeBoob SquarePants Theme” which is all well and good, until you realize that this thermometer is for “oral, underarm AND rectal use”. Puts a whole other angle on any music playing cuteness. I mean really, is it weird for a kid to have a Spongebob’s head sticking out of his butt, playing the theme song? You tell me.

Those days are now over thanks to Kidz-Med Inc’s new thermometer called “Thermofocus”. You can almost hear the collective sigh of relief from babies everywhere. The company claims that it is the first thermometer to take accurate body temperature readings without actually touching the body.

It does this by reading infrared heat from a person’s forehead, which yields results as accurate as the dreaded rectal thermometer, and more accurate than an ear thermometer. The Thermofocus doesn’t just take a human’s temperature. It can also be used to take the temperatures of baby formula, bath water, and even food.

Anyone who’s had a fair amount of exposure to lake and stream fishing knows that the temperature of the water can plan a significant part in how well the fishing goes, sometimes affecting the fish, sometimes affecting your legs. For both reasons a thermometer can be a handy tool in your bag to check the temperatures, but getting the thermometer into the water where you want isn’t always the easiest task.

With this infrared thermometer, you can just point the device at the water and it will instantly reveal the temperature without needing to lean over a bank or walk in and disrupt the area.
