Sony offers three new digital photo frames

Posted in Sony by Shane McGlaun on September 2nd, 2010

When it comes to digital photo frames Sony already has several offerings. Digital frames are very popular and are one of the best ways to show off all the pictures you take without spending time and money printing them all out.

Sony has added three new frames to its lineup. The new fames include the DPF-XR100, DPF-VR100 and DPF-D830. The XR100 and VR100 are very similar with the notable exception that the XR100 is a portrait mode frame. Both can show AVCHD format video and have 10.2-inch LED backlit screens. Both of these frames also have an internal image processor that will scale pictures up to 256MP to fit the screens.

Sony PS4 not download only

Posted in Sony by Conner Flynn on August 26th, 2010

Digital downloads might seem like the future when it comes to consoles, but realistically it is still a long way off, according to Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai. He ruled out future digital-only PlayStation consoles (perhaps thinking about the PS4), despite Sony being the first company do so with the PSPgo. In that case it didn’t go over so well.

Most gamers still prefer physical media anyway, so it will be a long time before we see digital only consoles go mainstream. Would you want physical content or digital?

With each new line of TVs that debut, we get more and more features. It’s common today for TVs to have full HD resolution, 3D, and internet connectivity all built-in. The internet connectivity opens up a whole new world of content for the viewer right from their TV.

A company called Hillcrest Labs has announced that it has licensed its Freespace technology to both Sony and LG for use in remote controls for web-connected TVs. The technology allows the remotes to be used like a mouse for HTPCs that needs no desk.

Sony develops Single Wire Interface Technology

Posted in Sony by Conner Flynn on August 20th, 2010

Sony has developed a single wire interface technology. The new design will replace the 20 or so cables that are usually found inside mobile phones to provide power, control signals, audio, video etc, with one single copper wire that can handle data at 940Mbps.

This design should offer greater reliability and give Sony’s design team more flexibility and space when designing their products. We can’t wait to see what they do with it. Less wires will allow them to do all sorts of things.

Sony not “recalling” Vaio notebooks, firmware fix is available

Posted in Sony by Shane McGlaun on July 1st, 2010

Yesterday I mentioned that Sony was having an issue with some 530k of its Vaio notebooks where they could overheat and cause distortion of the plastic chassis of the machine. There were mixed reports that the machines were being recalled along with reports that a firmware fix was being offered.

These mixed reports left a lot of us wondering exactly what was going on. Apparently, both things were true. To most of us when you say recall, we think box it up and send it back. Sony and the Consumer Product Safety commission have issued a “recall” on the machines.

Sony issues recall on 535k Vaio laptops, or does it?

Posted in Sony by Shane McGlaun on June 30th, 2010

Sony has confirmed that about 535,000 of its Vaio laptops are plagued with an overheating issue. According to the company, there have been 39 reports of the machines overheating to the point that the notebook deformed from heat.

Sony claims that no reports of injuries have been made. The issue affects Vaio F and C machines launched back in January. The real confusing part is that there are mixed reports of how the issue is being addressed.
