Vudu integrates Wikipedia

Posted in Set Top Boxes by Conner Flynn on November 24th, 2009

Vudu integrates WikipediaVudu just announced the integration of Wikipedia into its service, featuring information about movies, actors and other info. You’ll be able to read articles and follow links, just like on Wikipedia.com. Vudu is also adding their own links to Vudu information like for instance the filmography of an actor/actress. Seems like a great way to learn more about the content you are watching and to find related content as well.

The company has been able to do steady upgrades thanks to the user-interface being generated on Vudu’s remote servers and they’ve managed to provide a consistent experience across many devices. That’s really saying something.

Boxee Box coming soon

Posted in Set Top Boxes by Conner Flynn on November 12th, 2009

Boxee Box coming soonBoxee is coming. And I don’t mean that kind from the original Battlestar Galactica. I mean the home theater PC software that makes watching streaming downloaded media on your TV easy. Mac Mini fans like it since it can be installed right on top of OS X. That’s because you need a computer in your living room to run it.

But it won’t be that way forever. Boxee just announced a deal with a hardware partner to release a Boxee Box for your living room sometime next year. So instead of buying a computer just for the Boxee, you’ll have a device designed specifically for your Boxee-related home theater use.

Roku Live Streaming MLB Games

Posted in Set Top Boxes by Conner Flynn on August 11th, 2009

Roku Live Streaming MLB GamesRoku users now have something else to smile about. In addition to Netflix and Amazon on Demand, Roku users can now access baseball games from premium MLB.tv accounts. This means live, out-of-market games as well as on-demand games from the past week.

The downside is that you have to be a subscriber of the paid MLB.tv service, which costs $35 for the remainder of the 2009 season. But chances are that if you are a subscriber already, then you are a serious baseball fan, so it’s probably worth it. The Roku box would be a great way to get on-demand and live baseball on your TV.

OnLive streaming gaming service: The future of gaming? If OnLive has anything to say about it, this could this be a console killer. Something that puts the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and the Nintendo Wii six feet under. OnLive handles all the heavy graphics rendering on its servers and what you get is lag-free gaming as a video stream. IF it works as advertised.

You would use either your broadband-connected PC or Mac, or you could hook up the set-top box to your home theater, which features Ethernet, HDMI and USB. According to OnLive, the box costs “less than a Wii.” OnLive will be launching later this year.

FyreTV gets its wireless streaming porn box on

BoXXX

FyreTV, which first got noticed at last year’s Consumer Electronics Show, kicked off its porn streaming to your home media room via wireless IPTV set-top box service at this year’s CES. The box itself is called, suggestively enough, the BoXXX.

The BoXXX comes with the service, which has a starting price of around $10 a month. For that virtual equivalent to a roll of $1 bills you get access to “streaming DVD quality adult content.” The pay-for options look to be ala cart though, unless you purchase one of the all you can view porn packages (you do get some FyreCredits as part of the service). Otherwise you pay something called 1 FyreCredit roughly per minute of adult entertainment, though this seems to vary depending upon the particular adult production studio content you are watching.

However, the LINK doesn’t appear to have any internal storage. It does boast six USB ports so you can attach your own drives that have photos, video or music. You’ll also get HDMI and optical S/PDIF outputs, a gigabit ethernet, 802.11b/g WiFi, and an included wireless “keymote” with trackball.
