Botropolis: This week in robots

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on July 10th, 2009

Botropolis: This week in robotsCongratulations to us all. We still live despite all of the metal predators that are being built and programmed everyday. Let’s give ourselves a big pat on the back and then promptly begin building robot holocaust shelters. This week over at Botropolis we did the usual. We saw toys we love, bots we fear, some shirts we really would like to wear before the end…. Here’s some of what we covered this week.

Conspiracies: Secret US Military Autonomous Robot Project Spotted?

Terminator 3: Funny deleted scene.

RC Bats: Bots gone batty.

C3P-0: Straight Or Gay? (NSFW).

Tour de France Chalkbot

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on July 9th, 2009

Tour de France ChalkbotThe Tour de France is currently underway and Lance Armstrong is apparently returning to help promote his Livestrong campaign and raise cancer awareness. So Livestrong and Nike have teamed up to create the Chalkbot, a robotic chalk painter that will print messages along the path of the Tour de France.

If you want your own message printed just text ‘LIVESTRONG’ followed by your chalk message to 36453. They hope to print more than 100,000 messages over the course of the entire race. We like stories like this where robots are helping worthy causes instead of plotting our demise.

Botropolis: This week in robots

Botropolis: This week in robotsWell, it’s Friday and you know what that means. It’s time to take a look at some of the things we covered over at Botropolis this week. Whether we like it or not, robots are here to stay. Our job is simply to document the coming apocalypse for future generations. If there are any. So lets take a look at what happened this week.

3 Tenors of Terror: Creepy bots sing Happy Birthday.

i-SOBOT pimps his ride: Gets a new Steam Tank.

AIMEC:3: Karaoke singing bot.

Robot Mythbusters?: Sure looks like it.

Self-Portrait Machine makes you do all the work

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on July 3rd, 2009

Jen Hui Liao’s self-portrait machine will snap a picture of you. After that you are more or less handcuffed to a drawing board as it forces you to sketch your own likeness. So a robot is enslaving you for once. Just for a little while.

Jen Hui Liao is exploring the fact that “our personal identities are represented by the products of the man-machine relationship.” Whatever. I just picture all future robots forcing us to do art for their walls, while we hang in the closet between masterpieces being fed intravenously.

Cute Penguin robot wants to be your Facebook companion

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on June 29th, 2009

Cute Penguin robot wants to be your Facebook companionPierre Bureau, the founder and CEO of Arimaz in Switzerland, recently showed off a demo of a prototype of a cute penguin robot that his company is planning to begin selling in September for $99. It’s called MyDeskFriend. The idea is that this Penguin is a small companion for your desk.

It comes with a docking station which is hooked up to your PC. You can interact with the robot in a bunch of ways. It can follow your finger and will even detect the edges of the your desk so that it doesn’t fall off, thanks to 5 infrared sensors. It also has an accelerometer, so it knows when it’s being touched or shaken. The eyes will even change color depending on it’s mood. If you shake it too much, it’s eyes will turn red because you’ve made it mad. You can even connect it with your Facebook profile for the ultimate in dorky behavior.

Botropolis: This week in robots

Botropolis: This week in robotsThere was a bunch of robot news this week over at Botropolis. We were still recovering from how shockingly bad the Terminator movie was and the new Transformers flick that debuted didn’t impress us much either. Thank god we still have a never ending stream of robot related goodness to get us through. Here’s some of what we covered this week.

Rubber-Band Firing Wooden Robot: He’s cranked by hand.

Comic Books: Skull Headed Robot Fights Giant Monsters From Greek Mythology.

Daleks: Dalek Patrol Attacked By Roboraptors.

Robot vs. Washing Machine: Robot wins.

Botropolis: This week in robots

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on June 19th, 2009

Botropolis: This week in robotsIt isn’t easy keeping track of all the robot toys, apparel, etc, while also keeping a watchful eye on various robotic Frankenstein creations over at Botropolis. Luckily we have a sharp team that isn’t afraid to take caffeine intravenously. There’s also the added incentive of me letting the team use my underground Bot-shelter whenever we do face an imminent robot attack. What they don’t know is that I have a few traps installed. Stuff like a trap-door with Rancor pit beneath. You know, if rations start to get low. Hey, I have to look out for me. But I digress. Here’s some of what we covered this week.

Contest: Win a Pimp Bender T-shirt.

Damn that’s huge: Giant Gundam now complete.

Wall-E: New toy actually cleans.

Transformers: Devastator Has Balls.

Lego robot dock assimilates iPods

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on June 17th, 2009

Lego Robot dock assimilates iPodsYou ask us, this is a pretty cool use of Legos. And if companies don’t want to build robot iPod docks, then damnit, we will make our own. The creator actually built this bot-dock about 2 years ago, and only recently decided that it was time to share it with the internet.

The dock is a cannibalized iPod mini dock, and the robot/base is a mashup of several lego kits. (The AT-AT on the right claw gives it away. That, and the LEGOLAND sticker which came with Lego Soccer.) You can find more pics on flickr.

Botropolis: This week in robots

Botropolis: This week in robotsAnother week has come and gone. As usual, we’ve been keeping tabs on all things robot over at Botropolis. We haven’t had any reports of muscle-bound freaks appearing naked in the street and asking after John Connor, but hell, it’s only 2009. Still, we’re keeping our eyes peeled and we are your first line of defense. When they do strike, we will be ready with up to the minute updates. Here’s some of what we covered this week.

Magic: Octavia the robot gets fooled.

RoboFlush: For the extremely lazy.

T-Shirt: Robots In Disguise.

Fall Out Boy: New Robot Comic Books.

Voltron transforms into a working camera

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on June 11th, 2009

Voltron transforms into a working cameraThis transforming Voltron is awesome. A) It’s Voltron. B)It transforms into a working camera. and C) See A and B. This transforming Voltron action figure actually shoots 110 film. Apparently it was sold in the 1980s by Impulse Ltd.

Not that that helps us get one in the here and now. Few things in life are this awesome. Now, we are on a mission to find one. This is way cooler then that time my Qosmio notebook turned into a Transformer.

Botropolis: This week in robots

Botropolis: This week in robotsLook, we’ve brought on any robot apocalypse that we get. The more we keep building them in the now, the more we have to fight in the future. But it’s not like anyone heeds our warning over at Botropolis. Maybe humanity will start to pay attention when nursing home robots ram their cold steel fists up grandma and grandpa’s poop-shoots like a reverse dose of Ensure and put on their own puppet show. Or when your fancy new robot car turns into a trash compactor, kicking you out the door as a five inch bloody cube, with a line of similar cubes littering the highway. But until that day comes, all we can do is warn you. Anyhow, here’s some of what we covered this week.

iRobot: Roomba goes potty.

Power Mac G4: It puts itself away neatly.

Evolution: Robot style.

6 In 1 solar robot kit

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on May 28th, 2009

6 In 1 solar robot kitThis 6 in 1 solar kit can be built into a dog, boat, car, plane (static and moving), and even a windmill. Looks like a great way to learn a bit about robotics and solar energy. Only £13.00, which is odd because I don’t think they get much sun in the UK, so not very much play time with this thing.

Still, rain or shine, you get a bunch of variety in one kit. Six robots are better than one. Buy a few kits and soon you’ll have a solar robot army.

Terminator Salvation Bobble Heads

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on May 27th, 2009

Terminator Salvation Bobble HeadsTerminators are usually scary. But like everything else, they just look silly with a bobble head. Celebrate the release of the new Terminator Salvation movie by getting one of these Terminator Salvation Bobble heads. You could punch it’s head over and over again and pretend you’re tough like John Conner. Or just because you want your movie money back.

There are two versions available of the T-600 Terminator, the first one pictured has built in LED lights for eyes.

Botropolis: This week in robots

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on May 22nd, 2009

BotropolisAnother week, another robot roundup. John Connor really has his work cut out for him. Right now it may be cute to make Nuclear Fuel Cells that fuel Terminators, or Transforming dinosaurs, but it’s no longer fun and games when a naked Terminator shows up in your town and steals your clothes and motorcycle. Here’s some of what we covered on Botropolis this week:

NSFW: A Girl Gets Transformed.

iPod Touch: It makes a good robot head.

iRobot: Ember bots.

To Serve and Protect: Robocop armor.

Botropolis: This week in robots

Botropolis: This week in robotsRobots have been busy this week, which is fitting since they are our slaves. When they are finished being busy with all the chores we give them, they’ll be busy wiping us off the face of the Earth. This week over at Botropolis we got to check out a Roomba’s chaotic path, saw one printing on the floor, and learned about a bot that asks for directions. Here’s some other stuff we covered.

Roomba mod: Roomba gets a hand.

SOBEaR: The Robot Panda Bartender.

Jackoon: The Soul Of Jackson Pollock In A Robot Body.
