PSP-3000 gets official

Posted in PSP by Conner Flynn on August 20th, 2008

PSP-3000 gets officialAt the Leipzig Games Convention today, Sony revealed the brand new PSP-3000, which will arrive Oct 15 in Europe for around $250. As far as looks, it looks the same as the PSP-2000, but it features an “improved screen that’s better outside with no glare and a built-in mic.” A no glare screen will sell many on the device by itself. I guess you could say that this is Sony’s DS Lite. More details have yet to surface, but we’ll stay on top of it for you.

GPS games coming for the Sony PSP
The Japanese have been using GPS applications on their PSP for awhile, but now it looks like Sony is about to get off it’s ass and bring it Stateside. They are working on a new game that will take advantage of GPS to give the player a totally unique playing experience no matter where you go or where you are.

The new peripheral will change the dynamics of games on the PSP, or so they hope, opening up new ways to play. Sony plans to introduce the whole GPS thing to third party publishers while they brainstorm within their first-party studios.

Google search on Sony PSP Firmware 4.00
The portable is getting Google search, with stored memory of your last 20 searches. Another feature is that video played from a memory stick can be sped up or slowed down to suit your needs. Nothing very earth shattering, but welcomed nontheless.

PSP Skype headset now available in the U.S.

Skype headset for the Sony PSPIf you have a PSP slim and you’re up to date with the firmware you may have been thinking about taking advantage Skype through the Wi-Fi connection on your PSP. One of the hurdles might have been getting your hands on a headset to use with the Skype feature, which seems to have taken an awful long time. In fact, you may remember that the Japan launch was delayed due to something wrong with the headset microphone.

Well, now SCEA has finally come around and yesterday launched the Skype compatible headset to make it easier to get some free VoIP calls from your PSP - one more thing that makes that portable game console just plain cool. The headset comes with stereo sound and a microphone for $30, which is more than we had heard, but at least its available now.

Make your PSP glow like a nuclear accident
Want your PSP to glow like it just set off the geiger counter? These replacement covers will give it an otherworldly glow. Just put your PSP in daylight for a few minutes, and then switch off the lights and watch your system glow.

The XCM Magic Night Glow face plate attaches to the front of your Sony PSP (slim model only. Sorry fatties.), and gives you a cool lights off look. They come in a variety of colors, including pearl, yellow, blue, red, green, and pink. Most of them glow in a different hue when in the dark.

PlayStation and Sky launch Go!View for the PSP
PlayStation has partnered with Sky to create a new video-on-demand download service called Go!View. As in…Go and view. Very clever. Those guys who name stuff really earned their money on that one. It will allow users to create TV schedules for their PSPs, completely tailored to suit the users individual needs and tastes.

You’ll be able to choose from a wide range of stuff like comedy, entertainment, sports and movies. You download it from your PC and watch wherever and whenever you damn well like. Never miss anything ever again. It works on a subscription or pay-per-view basis.

Waterproof PSP bath bag will make you wrinkly

Waterproof PSP bath bag will make you wrinkly
Possibly one of the most ridiculous things I’ve seen in quite some time, this is basically a fancy ziplock bag. A fancy ziplock bag that keeps your PSP dry so you can play it while taking a bath and getting all wrinkly.

I’m not sure why they are trying to sell you a sandwich bag that you can get anywhere. Then again, this one has that fancy drawstring at the top. Why not just put the PSP down long enough to get in the water and actually get clean with some soap. Your friends and loved ones will thank you.

PSP gets Colorware option April 14th

PSP gets Colorware
Like the DS Lite, the Sony PSP will be receiving the Colorware option starting April 14th. So for those of you who aren’t thrilled with the usual color palette, this is good news. It probably means that the new Bronze color and the Mint aren’t doing it for you. I don’t blame you. Bronze? Mint? The first is a statue color, the latter should be reserved for Girl Scout cookies.

There’s no word on what it will cost just yet to jazz up your PSP, but I would think that it’d be equivalent to the price for the DS Lite. Let’s face it, it beats th hell out of taking a can of Krylon to your console.

Pimp your PSP into an arcade machine

Pimp your PSP into an arcade machine
Not a full size arcade machine, of course. Your PSP screen would be really tiny inside of a huge cabinet. This might be the most useless PSP accessory ever, but it’s also one of the coolest. You can turn your PSP into a small retro cardboard arcade machine, straight out of the 80’s.

The cardboard mini game for PSP comes in a pack of two, with authentic graffiti and mall-rat trash. It only costs $12.49. This is a perfect way to relive your youth, but on a smaller scale. Personally I dig the Cosmic Intruders version.

Awesome looking Sony PSP 2 concept

Awesome looking Sony PSP 2 concept
Check out this pic of a new Sony PSP 2 concept. It’s pretty sweet looking and has a pretty big screen. Kotaku had a contest to see what kind of cool PSP 2 concepts readers could come up with, and this is one of them. Watching movies on this one would be very nice. Unfortunately, they don’t really exist. There were some pretty interesting designs, and some haha funny ones, but this is one of my favorites.

Sony PSP goes bronze

Sony PSP goes bronze
Apparently, the folks at Sony recently discovered the color spectrum and they aren’t afraid to use it. Last week, we announced the red PSP, then the mint green PSP. The bronze version is what happens to your PSP when it goes on vacation and gets too much sun.

It’s available as a new PSP Lite Value Pack, and will feature a paltry 32MB Memory Pro Duo memory stick and an AV digital cable. Pricing was €147 at press time. It will likely cost you more if you intend to import it. Anyone want to play guess the next color?

Sony launches a PSP Cradle with remote

Posted in PSP by Darrin Olson on March 4th, 2008

Sony PSP Cradle holds the PSP upright and comes with a wireless remote controlSony continues to come out with some pretty cool stuff for the PSP, and it looks like this PSP Cradle is a must for anyone that uses their Playstation Portable to watch movies. It would be especially handy for those in Japan that can get the 1seg TV signals, which is probably why this is unfortunately launching in Japan only, for now.

The cradle docks the PSP and holds it upright so you don’t have to hold it or balance it against something to watch videos, and comes with an IR remote control so you can set back and control the playback without having to get up and press the little buttons on the PSP. The PSP Cradle will also charge the handheld device when plugged in and docked, and optionally comes with AV cables to hook up a bigger scren.

If mint green is your color scheme of choice, prepare to feel the cool menthol sensation of this model, now available in Japan. If you absolutely must have it, you can always import one.

New red PSP bundled with God of War

New red PSP bundled with God of War
Take it easy PSP fans, we don’t have a release date just yet, but according to Kotaku, a red PSP will be hitting store shelves this summer bundled with God of War: Chains of Olympus. You also get Superbad and a gift certificate for a downloadable PlayStation Store game.

It’s a branded PSP similar to the Star Wars PSP from awhile back. Sure to be awesome news for those of you into God of War and the color red. Personally, I’m not much for this red version. If it were perhaps a bit pinker, I would dub it the Pepto PSP.
