Lovefilm could be headed to UK PlayStation 3 consoles

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on October 11th, 2010

Many Americans may not know what Lovefilm is and may have never heard of it, but for those living in the UK, it’s basically their Netflix. So UKers are probably very happy about a video that has since been pulled from Sony’s YouTube channel.

Basically Lovefilm streaming will be coming to UK-based PS3 owners sometime this autumn, with a bunch of search options available and free trials offered to those who’ve yet to try it out. We’ll likely hear more from Sony soon, but for now keep your fingers crossed.

PS Move SMG rifle accessory

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on October 7th, 2010

When Sony announced its PlayStation Move it also announced some accessories at the same time. Like a charging stand and even a light gun attachment. You have to catch up with those third parties who make cheap plastic Wii accessories after all.

And now CTA Digital has a submachine gun peripheral called simply “Submachine Gun.” Just clip your Move baton up front, slide the nunchuck part in the grip, and shoot away. Both the stock and scope are removable.

PlayStation Plus cards hitting retail

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 28th, 2010

Here’s more good news for PlayStation 3 owners. You’ll soon be able to purchase PlayStation Plus membership cards at retail. Gift cards granting access to Sony’s premium PlayStation Network are now being shipped to stores all over North America.

The cards have already hit some Target stores and will cost you $17.99 for three months of PlayStation Plus access. Sony also offers a 12-month subscription for $49.99. The service grants users early access to some demos and beta tests, discounts on software and the occasional freebie.

Sony warns that counterfeit PS3 controllers can explode

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 26th, 2010

Sony says that counterfeit PlayStation 3 controllers can be unstable, as in they might blow up in your hands. Or wherever it may be. Sony made an announcement to consumers, telling them not to take the risk of buying counterfeit products as it could cause them serious injury.

According to the company, counterfeit PlayStation 3 controllers, “identical in appearance to genuine PlayStation 3 wireless controllers,” have started cropping up in the wild. The company said that the “quality, reliability, and safety of counterfeit products is uncertain.”

PlayStation Move accessories charge controllers

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 23rd, 2010

The Wii had it’s turn at tons of silly attachments that make you look dorky and now it is the PlayStation Move’s turn. Nyko, Mad Catz, Interworks, CTA Digital, PDP and more are churning out plenty of plastic shells and chargers for those ball-tipped motion controllers.

You wouldn’t want just the Wii nerds waving around crap peripherals, now, would you? Looks like there is already something for everybody.

Sony launches PlayStation Move EyePet bundle with creature care game

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 22nd, 2010

The PlayStation Move is hitting store shelves and so Sony has decided to offer up some deals. The company has added the PlayStation Move EyePet bundle to their list of launches.

With this kit you get the standard Move controller, a copy of the creature care game called EyePet and a PlayStation Eye camera. It’s only available through Toys R Us in North America and it will cost you $100. That’s not a bad price.

Sony launches PlayMemories app for 3D photos

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 22nd, 2010

If the recent 3.50 firmware update for your PS3 left you feeling like you need more 3D in your life, Sony has an extra treat for you. The company has announced their PlayMemories app.

The app will be available for download from the PlayStation Store in late September, letting you view both 2D and 3D photos captured with a 3D-compatible camera. Select a picture and zoom in or out using your DUALSHOCK®3 or SIXAXIS™ wireless controller. The app itself wasn’t shown yet, but we expect to see it pretty soon and see if it’s worth it or not.

PS3′s 3.5 update now live with 3D movies

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 21st, 2010

The Sony Playstation 3 3.50 update is now live. The new update adds 3D support for Blu-ray movies, not just the earlier game support. If you want to take advantage of the update, you’ll need a 3D-capable TV however, as well as active shutter 3D glasses and an HDMI 1.4 cable. That’s one expensive update if you want 3-D movies.

There’s also Facebook integration, allowing developers to incorporate more social networking into games. Another key feature in the upgrades is a Grief Reporting Function that allows users to report harassment through the Friends link in the XMB interface.

Playstation Move gets iFixit teardown

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 20th, 2010

As usual, the folks over at iFixit have wasted no time doing their latest autopsy, this time on the Playstation Move. The teardown yielded two surprises. The motion controller is very easy to dismantled compared with most devices.

They also discovered that the Move includes many components that are typically included in smartphones. It has an accelerometer and a gyroscope, but also a full processor, a vibrating motor, Bluetooth and a compass.

PlayStation Move now on sale at Amazon

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 17th, 2010

The PlayStation Move isn’t supposed to go on sale until September 19th, but that hasn’t stopped some local brick-n-mortar retail shops from selling early. And now Amazon has also jumped the gun and put the PlayStation Move $99.99 Starter Bundle up for sale.

If you choose the right shipping method and order today you may even get it in your hands before the 19th. Amazon also has the $399.99 PlayStation 3 320GB with Move Bundle, $49.99 Move Controller, and $29.96 Move Navigation Controller ready for purchase. The move is on the move.

MoveMen, Heroes of the PlayStation Move

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 14th, 2010

Well, this is a bit odd. In an attempt to make you a fan of the PlayStation Move, Sony has introduced these two bubble headed dudes? They are called the MoveMen and they are stars of a new PlayStation Move ad push.

The campaign is directed by FilmFaktisk’s Lars Åndheim and looks like it is limited to Norway. They apparently fight crime with their glowing bubble heads, with PSmove controllers holstered at their side. It’s all rather silly.

Sony launches yaybuttons.com

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 12th, 2010

Sony’s latest marketing campaign is aimed directly at Microsoft’s motion-sensing peripheral. If you go over to www.yaybuttons.com you can interact with a two-dimensional PlayStation Move, and see some quotes from Kevin Butler, explaining Sony’s various advantages over Microsoft’s Kinect.

Sony fans will love it. Microsoft fans will hate it. The rest of us just wish they would stfu and concentrate on making good games. If you want to sell consoles and peripherals, it’s all in the games.

Pink DualShock 3 coming September 21st

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 10th, 2010

The PS3 dualshock controllers are pretty manly looking. They look tough and we know that they are capable enough. But now Sony is rolling out another version. It’s the same old controller, but in a pink shade for the lady of the house.

Pricing is the usual $54.99 for this wireless controller and GameStop should have them in within a couple of weeks. It’s strong enough for a man, but clearly made for a woman.

Classic White DualShock 3 appears

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 6th, 2010

The heavenly white PS3 Slim pictured above can be found in Japan, but the “Classic White” DualShock 3 beside it has just appeared for preorder at e-tailers in the US. We doubt very much that a white 160GB game system will follow this controller across the Pacific, but it also would not surprise us too much if Sony reveals one before these preorders ship on October 15th.

Because Sony already sells a “Ceramic White” controller, and as Engadget points out, unless you’re attempting to match colors, a single shade of white is generally all you need.

PS3 Jailbreak released to the public

Posted in PS3 by Conner Flynn on September 1st, 2010

I’m sure Sony isn’t too happy about this news. The PSJailbreak claimed to allow users to backup their games to a hard drive recently, and now a hack called PSGroove has surfaced, which claims to be an open source PSjailbreak.

This time the code has to be downloaded and installed on an AT90USBkey or Teensy++ USB development board, then you homebrew sorts will be able to execute unsigned third-party apps and games on the PS3. The ability to boot ISO files is disabled for now, but we are sure that a workaround will be available soon.
