Legal Music Downloads Without DRM?

Posted in Digital Audio,News by Chris Weber on January 24th, 2007

Major Record Labels may allow music downloads with DRM copy protection schemesThe recording industry may do something it vowed to never do. No, there are no new Michael Jackson albums coming your way, instead the recording industry may allow music downloads without DRM restrictions to combat piracy. You read that correctly, to decrease piracy, record labels may remove copy restrictions on downloaded songs.

In fact, one of the four major recording labels may make the move within the next few months. Most independent labels already sell music in an easy to copy format, usually MP3s, that contain no copy protection schemes. They believe that allowing fans to distribute legally purchased music increases the market for the music instead of decreasing demand.

The major labels are taking a hint from the independents and hope by removing copy protection they can revive slumping …

According to reports the tool has been successfully used and backed-up a Blu-ray DVD in more than one case, but at this point the it is not yet in a stable version. “File buffering and reading process was buggy… There is still some bugs that needs to be fixed. (Alpha version!)”, muslix64 stated Monday on the doom9 forum. BackupHDDVD was released to the public on SourceForge, and it would be likely that BackupBluray will show up there with source in the near future as well.

Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Network Connection with CentrinoThe wireless connectivity options on a laptop are becoming increasingly important considering the growing availability of bandwidth-consuming content such as movies, videos and music. The quality of this experience can be limited by current networking technologies which may not provide adequate bandwidth or wireless range.

To help with this problem, Intel is promoting a new wireless product that works with its Centrino Duo line of processors to assist users in getting more out of their wireless networks. Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N is based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification and offers users more speed, extended wireless range, and longer battery life.

Uncharacteristic of Intel, it has decided to make a commitment to the draft Wi-Fi standard, known as 802.11n. Intel typically chooses to stick with approved standards to avoid the headaches of early adoption.

Intel has also started a program with vendors like Asus, …

Robot Nurses Coming to a Hospital Near Your

Posted in Humor,News,Robots,Science by Chris Weber on January 23rd, 2007

european scientists developing robot nurses could be in hospitals in 2010European scientists think they may have an answer to the nurse shortage: build robot nurses to replace the puny hu-mon nurses. The robots would perform basic tasks and free up the real nurses to do the important stuff like look hot and give naughty boys shots in the bum or something like that.

Actually, the robots would be performing more of a janitorial function than actual nursing activities. The robots would clean up spills, deliver messages and guide visitors to their beds. Wouldn’t a Roomba, a telephone and some old people be a lot better at this and a lot cheaper? No wonder Europe is such an economic disaster. Their brilliant minds are busy re-inventing stuff Americans can buy on late night TV.

In all seriousness, it appears that …

At the same time this announcement is a set back for rival chip maker AMD who has been in head to head competition with Intel in coming out with more advanced, multi-core chips sets. AMD also currently provides processors for Sun servers.

Sun stated that it is planning on integrating the Intel Xeon chips yet in the first half of this year. They will offer systems running not only Solaris, but also Windows and Linux OS’s with the new Intel chip as …

High-Def a Mixed Blessing for Adult Film Industry

Posted in Blu-ray,HD DVD,News by Chris Weber on January 22nd, 2007

adult film's move to high def has unexpected consequencesWith the recent brouhaha over which format the adult film industry plans to adopt, one question is overlooked: who wants to see their porn in high definition? With high definition comes a high dose of reality. Porn actors and actresses are real people and real people have wrinkles, blemishes and razor burn, not so sexy features that some are wondering if viewers will really want to see close up and crystal clear.

The New York Times recently picked up the subject and talked to producers and actors and actresses in the industry. According to Stormy Daniels, actress, writer and director, “The biggest problem is razor burn.” She’s also quoted as saying “I’m not 100 percent sure why anyone would want to see their porn in HD.”

With the new clarity of the …

Google is digitizing over a million books at university of Texas.Google is partaking in a multi-year project in conjunction with University of Texas at Austin to digitize more than one million books from the universities libraries. This extends on a deal they had made starting in 2004 with five other libraries – the universities of Oxford, Harvard, Michigan, Stanford and the New York Public Library. This is a massive, massive job that Google is undertaking, but Jens Redmer, director of Google Book Search in Europe stated an important fact at an invite-only event called ‘Unbound’ held recently at the New York public library, ‘The majority of information lies outside the Internet.’

Redmer went on to describe the project Google is undertaking, “We are working on a platform that will let publishers give readers full access to a book online.” This project has been under some scrutiny …

Posted in News,Xerox by Chris Weber on January 21st, 2007

xerox parc invents self erasing paperHow many documents do you print for short term usage? You need the meeting agenda, that web page, maybe driving direction. You use it once or twice and it goes into the recycle bin or worse the garbage can. Xerox has been analyzing how people use paper and the company knows that 2 out of every 5 pages printed are only for temporary use. It’s found a solution.

Xerox has invented paper that erases itself after about 24 hours. The process can be sped up if needed by applying heat to the paper. The technology works by coating paper with a special chemical mixture that reacts to beams of light from specially designed printers. The light beam causes the chemical mixture to react and turn a blue-purple color. However the blue-purple state is unstable …
