The GameCube Lives!

Perrin Kaplan announcement of Gamecube end may have been innacuratePoor Perrin Kaplan. It was just a week ago that the Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Affairs for Nintendo America went on the record and said that the days of Mario’s masters making the GameCube were over. “Are we producing any more GameCubes? No,” Kaplan told GameDaily, and the news made the rounds faster than Wiis flying on the shelf at Wal-Mart.

No so fast, Perrin: the Japanese parent division is telling us that there is still life in the Cube. “We are continuing to manufacture and sell Nintendo GameCube, which is an ideal entry-level value system and has a strong library of games,” said a Nintendo spokesperson to Engadget, and similar reversals were issued by Nintendo’s European divisions. “The continuing appetite for new games is best demonstrated by strong sales of the GameCube version of ‘The …

Sony says PS3 shortage should be resolved by MayAccording to a report from Reuters, Sony is planning to ship 2 million PlayStation 3 game consoles to the US by the end of March with hopes of resolving the shortage issues by May of this year.

Despite rumors of PS3′s sitting idle on store shelves, a Sony executive cited that some areas of the country still had no consoles on their shelves months after the initial release. “It’s a testament to the fact that we’ve been able to manufacture and ship units on a greater pace than any previous console,” said Jack Tretton, chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment America in the report.

This statement seems contradictory to a recent study showing that the PS3 console was bringing up the rear in sales recently in the new generation of game consoles, falling behind Sony’s own PS2.

Wireless Bluetooth gaming control gloveImagine being able to play Donkey Konga without the need for the bongos, or play virtual tag online without the need for a keyboard, joystick or Wii nunchuk. The technonauts at Engineered Fibre Structures at the University of Manchester have come up with what could be the next big step in gaming: an electronic glove with a Bluetooth wireless connection that lets the wearer control and talk to the gizmos around them.

The patented device is made from soft nylon or acrylic material and stretches over your hand just like any other glove. Underneath the fabric are conductive pathways that are connected to sensors located in the fingertips of the glove, so when you make a connection (like say putting your index and middle fingers together in a line), a command is registered. Remember Tom Cruise shuffling pages and files around in …

Samsung creates worlds thinnest LCD at .74 mm thickTechnology continues to become more miniaturized day-by-day, with thinner, sleeker gadgets constantly rolling out from the design headquarters of the world’s electronics and computer manufacturers, but it’s dog-gone rare when a company beats its own record and renders its latest merchandise obsolete before it goes on sale.

The suits at Samsung SDI are currently gloating over their compatriots over at Samsung Electronics for coming up with a thinner LCD, creating a display that’s only 0.74 millimeters thick. That’s .08 mm thinner than the 0.82 mm units the Electronics boys announced just three short months ago. Is it too late to take back their Christmas bonuses?

While the new 0.74 mm LCD is a prototype, SDI is set to roll out a practically supersized 1.9 mm wide LCD in Q2 of 2007 as part of the company’s Ultra Edition II series …

Posted in News,PS3,Sony by Darrin Olson on February 24th, 2007

Sony Playstation 3 version for Europe will be less compatible with PS2 gamesEuropeans may see a disappointment with the launch of the Sony Playstation 3, as some hardware revisions to the console being launched is expected to be even less backwards compatible with Playstation and PS2 games.

The PS3 has already launched in the US and in Japan, and is expected for a March 23rd release in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Australasia with at least one slight change in the hardware configuration. This change, specifically replacing the “Emotion Engine” with emulation software, will save costs in production of the PS3 and help pass savings onto consumers, but it also makes the PS3 even less compatible with older PS2 and Playstation games. “The Emotion Engine has been removed and that function has been replaced with software,” said Nick Sharples, a spokesman for Sony in London. …

Lucusfilm owned by George Lucas has filed a trademark infringement against DiggLucasFilm, the company that “Star Wars” creator George Lucas owns, has filed a trademark infringement suit against the owners of Digg.com, the popular social networking website. The complaint alleges that Digg infringes on the copyright of a 1995 LucasArts adventure video game titled “The Dig”, and that Digg.com is treading on their valuable IP turf.

“THE DIGG mark is confusingly similar in sound, meaning, and appearance to the Opposer’s THE DIG mark,” reads the LucasFilm Notice of Opposition document filed last month in San Francisco. “The Applicant’s registration and use of the DIGG Mark would likely create confusion, mistake, or deception in the minds of prospective purchasers as to the origin or source of the Opposer’s Goods associated with THE DIG Mark.” In short, LucasFilm is saying that there are still people out there that want …

Posted in Games,News,Nintendo by Darrin Olson on February 23rd, 2007

No. But do we have the inventory there for people to still purchase? Yes.”

That made sense to many since other game consoles from that generation had been put to rest, except for the Playstation 2 of course, who’s sales have surpassed game consoles beyond its own generation. Still for many this was unwelcome news and gained some publicity, but considering the source it was fact nonetheless.

Today from across the pond we here quite the opposite, that the sorrow spent for the lost purple game console was all for not since production of the GameCube is still alive and well. “I can …
